In recent years Nissan has been, really struggling in the Indian market due to dwindling sales and lacklustre product offerings. The automaker is recognized for both, it’s amazing economy cars as well as sports cars, but seem to not be able to grasp the Indian audience. To put it into perspective, Nissan Terrano for the recent sales year sold a just 1 unit which does serve to be a reminder as to how brutally changing the Indian automotive market is.

2020 nissan micra active design

Nissan has introduced a new product in the form of the Nissan Kicks but still fails to wow eyeballs as the Kicks falls in the lower quarter of sales numbers in its segment. Nissan’s disregard of the Indian audience by providing them with dated products is surely turning out to be more than a nightmare for the automobile giant.

The Nissan Micra Active is one such dated product that was introduced in 2013 alongside the facelifted 2013 Nissan Micra to provide for a more affordable entry-level vehicle into the brand. It was essentially the pre-facelift Nissan Micra with watered-down features and only one engine option. In 2013, the Micra Active did make a strong case for itself when it was going against the likes of the Maruti Suzuki WagonR and the Ford Figo (1st generation) but is the 2019 Micra Active which largely remains unchanged any match for its modern counterparts?

What will impress you

  • Peppy Petrol Engine
  • Short turning radius of 4.6 m
  • Relatively Quiet Cabin
  • Larger cabin than Competitors
  • Good outside visibility

What Won’t

  • Absence of Diesel Engine offered in the normal Micra
  • Abysmal Interiors
  • ABS and EBD only available on topmost trim
  • Overpriced for what it offers in 2019

What’s New in the Nissan Micra Active?

Even in its 2020 Model Year, the Nissan Micra Active fails to come to grips with how dated it has become when viewed with its competitors. The Micra Active has been given a nip and tuck here and there but still fails to come off as an attractive package. A couple of new features in Micra Active are:

  • Turn Indicators on ORVM’s(XV)
  • 6.2 Inch Touch Screen(XV)
  • Passenger Airbag as standard
  • Black Rear Parking Sensors
  • Speed Warning Indicator
  • Driver Seat Belt Warning

What are the variants available for Nissan Micra Active?

The Nissan Micra Active is essentially the pre-facelift Nissan Micra soldiering on with lesser kit and variants to provide a more economical entry point to its ownership. The Micra Active thus looses out on a lot of features that are available on the newer Nissan Micra, and let’s be transparent, the new Micra is anyway not going to wow you with its level of equipment.

Micra Active is offered only with a 1.2-litre 3-Cylinder Petrol Engine that also does its duty in the Datsun Go lineup, it churns out an average 67 bhp and 108 Nm of torque. The Micra Active misses out on the diesel engine available on the regular Micra and also on the CVT Transmission available with its petrol variant. The Micra Active thus, starting at 5.28 Lakh with its base XL trim, tops out at 6.08 lakhs with the XV Trim.

Looking at the pricing and equipment of even the topmost trim on the Micra Active, it becomes pretty apparent that Nissan’s grip on the Indian market is steadily loosening out as their product lineup is getting extremely dated and is in dire need of a complete overhaul.

Which trim should you go for?

Even the topmost trim of the Nissan Micra Active is just about 80,000 rupees dearer to the base variant and would thus most definitely be our pick among the three trims. For the extra amount of money the Micra Active does add a decent level of equipment in the form of the 6.2 Inch Touch Screen, ABS, EBD, Brake Assist, Turn Indicators on ORVM’s among others.

Full disclosure, we feel the presence of ABS and EBD alone make it a strong case to go for the top XV variant as stretching the budget for that extra bit of safety kit is never going to be among your regrets.

What are the engine characteristics of Micra Active?

The 2020 Nissan Micra Active features the tried and tested 1.2-Litre 3-Cylinder petrol engine churning out 67 Bhp@ 5000 rpm and 104 Nm of torque @4000 rpm powering the front wheels and comes mated to a 5-Speed manual gearbox. The engine on the Micra Active is one of its strong points in the segment, it is refined, peppy and pretty frugal.

Twist the key and the engine starts with a slight thrum and then completely settles down and becomes almost inaudible at idle. Though the engine is in one of its detuned configurations, it does not feel out of breath inside the city and tends to provide a good amount of punch to keep up with city traffic.

Unlike Maruti Suzuki Celerio, Nissan Micra Active backs you with loads of confidence and that is a rare feat in this segment. Tata has finally got this formula right with the Tiago and it is paying off. Hyundai Santro runs on nostalgia and so, tactics don't matter here.

How quick is the Micra Active from 0-100?

The Micra Active’ s Petrol Engine was never pitched to be a street scorcher, and it doesn’t pretend to be one. It is what it is, a simple, reliable, smooth and frugal companion to a pitched econobox. But it still manages to keep you engaged and make that swift city-run short and enjoyable.

2020 nissan micra active acceleration 0-100

Acceleration numbers thus don’t come as a shock as the Micra Active trails behind most of its modern competition in 0-100 times. Micra Active being the oldest offering in the segment comes in second last just above the Maruti Suzuki Celerio by a meagre 0.5 seconds.

The modern competition in the form of the Tata Tiago turns out to be the fastest of the lot, clocking 0-100 kmph at 14.3 seconds and its courtesy of the in-house developed Revotron engines which are even giving cars in the upper segment a run for its money. The dull combination of mediocre engine and heavy bodywork gets the best of Maruti Suzuki Celerio.

How nimble are the ride and handling characteristics?

The Micra Active is a cute little compact car, envisioned to be the perfect city carver. With its short turning radius of 4.6 meters and light power steering, manoeuvring it around the city roads becomes a breeze. It gives you the confidence to go through even the tightest of streets because deep inside you know that the Micra Active is not even going to break a sweat.

The Micra is pretty poised and stable in terms of it’s riding dynamics and you wouldn’t have much to complain when going into the deal with a clear mind about what the car has to offer. The addition of rear parking sensors on the upper variants also helps parallel park this car with ease, we might just conclude that the Micra Active is one of the easiest cars to parallel park.

How bitey are the brakes on Nissan Micra Active?

The addition of Anti-Lock Brakes and Electronic Brake Distribution with Brake Assist on the topmost XV Trim of the Micra Active is highly appreciated over the previous model years. The addition of ABS provides a safety net for the driver if one tends to overestimate the car’s ability at a point, the ABS might just save your day from going down the drain!

2020 nissan micra active braking

The front ventilated disc and rear drum setup provides sure-footed stopping power and a decent level of feedback and is just about adequate for the Micra Active. Its peppy and quick characteristics are also found in the braking department as the bite is strong and thus, stopping power, less.

Micra Active comes in on the heavier side in terms of kerb weight and that serves as a boon. It doesn't hamper the braking potential but at the same time helps in the more stable driving experience. Ask any Maruti Suzuki Celerio owner about it, you will get the gist. The heavy-weight champion of this lot is Tata Tiago and it carries around the weight with grace.

How good are the mileage figures of this compact little Nissan?

When the Nissan Micra Active was launched way back when it stunned the competition with exemplary fuel economy numbers with its petrol engine. The ARAI rated 19.1 kmpl was no slouch from a petrol engine in the Micra Active’s original era. The fact that the Micra Active consistently delivered or even delivers over 15 kmpl was a feat in itself and with its huge 41-litre tank, the Micra shuns at the sight of petrol pumps.

In 2020 though, the game is completely different since the Micra now pales out in comparison to its modern rivals that offer more kilometres per litre and also a much bigger range output further cementing the fact that the Micra Active is way out of its element and also long overdue for an update.

How well does the Micra Active carry around its compact form factor?

Nissan Micra Active is on the roomier side of hatchbacks all thanks to it’s longer and wider construction. The headroom and legroom on offer in the rear seats are quite remarkable for such a small hatchback. The overall dimensions of the Micra Active might be on the larger side compared to rivals but it feels like the most compact to drive.

2020 nissan micra active curvy looks

The fly in the ointment though is the lack of ground clearance as the Micra Active tends to bottom out on the higher speed bumps. The Micra Active is a cute looking hatchback in itself though it looks outdated to the eye and the lack of any alloy options also stick out but the certain sense of retro charm and similarity to a MINI Cooper work in its favour.

.The Micra looks cute but it dials down on practicality as its competitors are more of the day to day practical types. This is one of the reasons why consumers would ditch the better proposition and go for the less appealing ones. But Nissan can make a pretty good outcome of this small car, with the right moves.

Some of the notable exterior features are:

  • Follow Me Home Headlamps
  • Turn Indicators on ORVM’s on the Top Trim
  • Black Rear Parking Sensors
  • High Mounted Third Brake Light
  • Active Badging

How reciprocating is the cabin of Nissan Micra Active?

The Nissan Micra Active’s interiors are nothing short of a disappointment. The moment you set foot inside the cabin, the obvious cost-cutting and age of the vehicle become apparent. The lack of any kind of noteworthy features even on the top end variant shine brightly into your eyes.

2020 nissan micra active cabin space

For the 2019 Model Year, Nissan really should have either discontinued or revamped the Micra Active just based on its interior, which appears bland, unintuitive and straight-up basic. The only saving grace inside the cabin is the sense of airiness and abundance of legroom and headroom which makes the Micra Active a happy place to be for taller passengers. The addition of adjustable rear headrests is also a bonus but this fact is far from the saving grace that the Micra Active needs.

The competition in the form of the Santro and Tiago come feature-loaded and up to date when pitched against the Micra Active and provide you with a superior interior experience for the segment. It is disheartening to come to terms that sitting inside the Micra Active would make you think that you are inside a fleet vehicle!

What are the various infotainment features on offer?

The less that is said about the infotainment system of the Micra Active the better. The 6.2 Inch Touch screen that is offered on the top XV Trim of the Nissan Micra is an embarrassment to the Nissan brand name, to say the least. The outlook of the touch screen is no different from the cheap Chinese dual din head units available in the market and the integration with the cabin is nonexistent. It is tough to believe that Nissan agreed to pass over this head unit as a factory fit since this feels much more like an aftermarket job.

2020 nissan micra active infotainment system

The touchscreen is also laggy and stutters and the graphics would remind you of your first ever windows pc. The 4 speaker setup that is offered and is just about average but does get the job done. The infotainment comes with Bluetooth telephony and phone mirroring as the only things that you would be thankful for.

The lack of features starts to get to you when you realize how many cars you are getting for the amount of money you are paying. For a 2019 model year car, the Micra Active’s interior was better left in 2013! Anyways, the noteworthy interior features are listed below.

Interior Features

  • Air Conditioning
  • Internally Adjustable ORVM’s
  • Height Adjustable Driver Seat(XV)
  • Steering Mounted Audio Controls(XLO and XV)
  • Rear Parcel Shelf(XLO and XV)

How much cargo can the Micra Active take in?

The Cargo Space on offer on the Micra Active is one of the largest in its segments and one of it’s few redeeming features. The Micra Active comes with a 251-litre cargo area that can be accessed through a hydraulically operated tailgate.

2020 nissan micra active cargo space

The larger proportions of the Micra Active help provide a decent opening and depth to the boot of the Micra Active and in a practical scenario, the Micra should easily be able to store your luggage for a fun weekend getaway. The addition of a 60:40 split rear seat would have opened up the cargo usability but alas it isn’t meant to be.

Compared to its competitors, it's impressive as of how Nissan manages to chuck out this much volume out of the compact form factor. So much so, that it has the largest boot of the lot and the nearest competitor, Tata Tiago is still a healthy 9 litres less!

How confident are the safety features on Nissan Micra Active?

The 2011 Nissan Micra which essentially is what the Micra Active comprises, was awarded a staggering 4 out of 5 stars in the EURO NCAP safety test which put into perspective how serious Nissan was when it came to safety. Though there were some major changes in the Indian variant of the Nissan Micra, it remained a very safe and reliable offering from Nissan.

2020 nissan micra active airbags

The Micra Active, however, was stripped down from all of the safety kits that were available on the Micra back then but for 2029 Nissan has made some strides in the section of safety by offering decent safety kit for the segment.

The various safety features are as follows:

  • Dual airbags as standard,
  • Anti Lock Brake(XV Trim)
  • Electronic Brake Distribution(XV Trim)
  • Speed Warning
  • Speed Sensing Door Locks
  • Door Ajar Warning
  • Driver Seat Reminder chime

The Micra Active thus with its solid construction and a decent level of standard safety kit especially on the top trim should be more than enough as a city runabout and the fact that Nissan offers a 2 year/50,000 km warranty on it’s offering, sweetens the deal even more.

How does it fare against its compact competitors?

Nissan Micra Active vs Hyundai Santro

Hyundai Santro is one of the newest kids on the block, reigniting one of the most successful car names for the Hyundai brand. The newer Santro has been pitted as an entry-level hatchback for the mass market and is one of the stiffer rivals to the Micra Active.

2020 hyundai santro

The all-new Hyundai Santro offers a very pleasant looking interior with it’s Mercedes inspired AC vents and dashes of colour here and there. The talking point being the 7 Inch Infotainment screen that is available on the Asta Trim comes loaded with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The Features on offer in the all-new Santro are no slouch either. The presence of multiple variants, large 14-inch wheels, Hyundai fit and finish, availability of an AMT, great driveability and amazing Hyundai support make the Santro an obvious choice over the Micra Active

Nissan Micra Active vs Tata Tiago

The Tata Tiago was one of the first cars that helped Tata get on its amazing streak of providing great vehicles for the price. The Tata Tiago was heavily marketed by Lionel Messi and was slated to be a game-changer for Tata, which it indeed turned out to be. With the choice of multiple engines and transmission options, a better-looking cabin than most rivals, a day by day getting Tata service and overall a segment above liveability experience, the Tiago was able to trump most of its competition when it was launched.

2020 tata tiago

Tiago offers the most features and a peppy and frugal engine lineup in this segment making it the pick out of all the competitors, especially the Micra Active.

Nissan Micra Active Vs Maruti Suzuki Celerio

The Maruti Celerio is one of the older offerings from the Maruti stable that has started to fade into the sunset now. The Celerio was positioned as an entry-level first time buys for consumers and with its great sales numbers, it outdid all expectations. Being a Maruti Suzuki product and entry-level hatchback, the Celerio was destined to be one of the best performers in its segment raking in twice the number of bookings with all the competitors pulled together. The Celerio has a twin which is a looker!

2020 maruti suzuki celerio

The Lack of higher-end features, average fit, and finish and forgetful 2-cylinder diesel engine did not hinder the Celerio from achieving sales success. The smooth petrol engine paired with a spacious cabin, decent features, and the amazing Maruti Service network would easily persuade you to go for the Celerio in a heartbeat.

What is the final Verdict for 2020 Micra Active?

The 2019 Nissan Micra Active is a relic in comparison to the modern offerings from rival brands be it in the form of the Tiago or the Santro. The Nissan Micra Active fails to make an impression on any front and just makes us feeling sorry for the manufacturer as they still go through the trouble of making it available in the market.

Why Nissan hasn’t updated its portfolio which fresher and updated offerings is certainly beyond me, but the outcome of this exercise could result in them shutting shop and leaving which really would be a loss for the Indian audience. The 2019 Nissan Micra Active though has been given a couple of extra features, is still way overpriced for the amount of car you get and you are certainly better off going for one of the competitors.
