Kerala University, Thiruvananthapuram is one of the first sixteen universities in India. It was established in 1937 as the University of Travancore in the southern parts of Kerala and is now approved by UGC. It is accredited by NAAC with an ‘A’ Grade. The University of Kerala has over 150 affiliated colleges and provides several undergraduates as well as post-graduate courses mainly in the subjects under the Faculty of Science, Management, Law and Arts. Apart from that, the university also offers 18 certification courses such as Computerised Accounting, Library and Information Science, and many more.

The process of admission for undergraduate programmes varies with the courses that one is opting for. While the admission of most undergraduate courses is based on merit, other courses like BTech, BArch require qualifying for an entrance exam. Similarly, for postgraduate programmes, admission is entrance based.

Kerala University: Admissions

Admissions at the University of Kerala is based on merits as well as on entrance exams. For most of the undergraduate courses, the candidate must secure 50% aggregate marks in 10+2 from any recognised board. While for PG courses, the candidate must obtain a bachelor’s degree from a recognised university.

How to Apply?

  • The admission process can be done online as well as offline. Candidates can download the application form from the official website of the university and can mail it to the university address by paying a fee of INR 350 (150 for reserved categories) for UG programmes and INR 600 (300 for reserved categories) for PG programmes.
  • Payments can be done through various online modes like NEFT or Challan.
  • In case of applying for more than one course, candidates have to fill a separate application form.
  • For MBA registration, a provisional list of ranks will be prepared based on the Entrance Test (CAT/CMAT/KMAT) constituting 80% weightage, Group Discussion and Interview having a weightage of 10% each respectively.

Kerala University: Placements

There is a dedicated Placement Cell in the university that has offered many such placements to deserving candidates. As per the highlights from the year 2019, about 50% of the students got a job offer. The highest salary being somewhere around INR 500000 and the lowest to be INR 120000. The top recruiter for the MBA students constituted big MNCs such as EY, Infosys and UST Global. Apart from that, students were also placed in banks like HDFC, ICICI and aviation companies like Air India.

Kerala University: Scholarships

The University provides scholarships to economically weaker students who find it difficult to pursue studies due to financial problems. They can opt for various scholarships like:

  1. Student's Aid Fund Scholarship
  2. Student's Group Personal Accident Insurance Scheme
  3. UG and PG Merit Scholarships

An amount of INR 1000 for UG and INR 1500 for PG students are to be provided as scholarship. Regular Students of colleges and departments of the KU can apply for the scholarship programme.

Kerala University: Facilities

  1. Transport Facility: There are university buses registered as educational institution buses for the conveyance of students to reach the campus from various ends of the city. Vehicles are also allocated to various departments for their study trips and field tours. The maintenance of vehicles is properly carried out by the Mechanical wing of the Engineering Unit.
  2. Hostel: The University of Kerala provides hostels to its students. There are six hostels working under the KU at Kariavattom Campus and Thiruvananthapuram. Regular maintenance is done for proper care of the hostels. A well established International Youth Hostel is functioning in the university to accommodate students during their visit to the University.
  3. WiFi Campus: All the campuses at KU are WiFi-enabled for seamless online education. The University has installed High-Speed Wireless Networking and has facilitated the completion of the e-governance programme implemented in the campuses.
  4. Library: The University has a vast library at the Kariavattom campus. It has more than 7000 books and has a subscription to over 60 periodicals. It also offers e-journals, UGC Infonet and much more.
  5. Sports Facility: The Kariavattom Campus has a huge playground where students are often found playing football, cricket and hockey. Gym facilities are also available in the Department of Physical Education which houses a stadium too. Indoor games facilities like shuttle court and basketball court are also available inside the campus.

Kerala University: Faculty

The University has well-qualified faculties with an approximate figure of around 233 members, all of them having years of experience in their relevant fields with Masters and PhD degrees. The Chancellor of the University is the Hon’ble Governor of Kerela, Shri Arif Mohammad Khan who has done his graduation from Aligarh Muslim University and post-graduation from Lucknow University.
