Nissan Micra was introduced in 2017 and it was instantly known for the quirky looks and nimble handling characteristics. Nissan's choice of powertrains also made it a very fuel-efficient car that was very light on the pocket. The Micra has been mildly updated for 2019 and the prominent updates are on the outside.

The car is powered by a duo of engines that includes a 1.2L petrol and 1.5L diesel each of which has its fair share of perks. The petrol motor is hoon to drive and its crisp responsiveness makes never so dull driving experience. The diesel, on the other hand, is a very good mile-muncher as it emphasises on fuel efficiency. Nissan has coupled a CVT gearbox with the petrol unit for added mileage advantage and the diesel comes with a 5-Speed stick shift.

This generation of Micra comes with clever chassis control tech, including a system that gently applies the rear brakes after going over a speed bump, to stop the nose from diving forward. The sales have decreased this year as compared to 2018 but it is still one of the best daily-driven cars for the urban jungle.

In how many variants is the Nissan Micra available in?

The Nissan Micra has 4 variants & 5 colours, 2 petrol, and 2 diesel engines. Here, both the petrol variants are closely priced and it ranges from Rs. 6.62 Lakhs to Rs. 7.81 Lakhs. The XL O (CVT) and XV(CVT) get an 1198 cc petrol engine and XL(O) and XV get a 1461 cc diesel engine. Both the petrol variants are paired with X-Tronic Automatic Transmission with CVT(Continuous Variable Transmission) and the overdrive button gives gush in acceleration while enjoying a better fuel economy and smoother performance.

The diesel powertrains are coupled to a 5-Speed manual gearbox which makes it much more responsive than its petrol counterparts. The feature list is plentiful and Nissan has focused more on creature comfort features with emphasis also on safety.

Which variant should you go for?

The XV (CVT) is the most value for money variant of Micro. It is available at Rs.7,81,686 and gets a lot of features like Automatic Headlamps, Brake-Assist, Rear Spoiler, Alloy Wheels, and NissanConnect- Safety & Security. As it is a Petrol variant, the car will be a lot smoother/quiet than the diesel variants. But, the diesel variant will have the edge in terms of mileage figures but it is highly unlikely to be bartered for the comfort of the peppy petrol motor.

What are the powertrain options for Nissan Micra?

The 2019 Nissan Micra is powered by a 1.2L petrol and 1.5L diesel engine which are both peppy and complements the character of this compact hatchback. the three-cylinder petrol engine is apt for city runs and will go all day long. But if highway drives are on your mind, the diesel makes more sense as it has a much meatier lower and mid-range that helps in cruising.

The CO2 emission of this motor is 104g/km which is impressive and that adds to its environmental factor. This car has a new Xtronic CVT automatic transmission which will keep you at ease on the roads.

On the spec sheet, Nissan Micra is not the most powerful but it translates to the real world, due to its impressive power to weight ratio. It is the only car at this price point that comes equipped with a CVT gearbox while all of its competitors are stick-shift. This gives it an edge in driving comfort as well. Honda Jazz is the adrenaline pumped of this lot and for the record also comes with the most spacious cabin as well.

How quick is the Nissan Micra from 0-100?

The combination of a peppy petrol engine and an efficient CVT gearbox helps the Micra sprint quickly and it puts its counterparts with bigger engines to shame. The main reason for this impressive performance is its power to weight ratio that helps it chuck out more bhp per tonne.

The shorter wheelbase also enables it to sprint with less load which also adds up to the under 10-second acceleration. We would love to see the internationally sold 1.0L turbocharged petrol engine on Indian shores, hopefully in the next facelift!

0-100 KMPH                   (Seconds)

Nissan Micra strikes again doing 0-100 under 10 seconds which is mind-blowing for a hatchback. Hyundai Elite i20 is the slowest of them all and the culprit here is kerb weight coupled with clumsy engine mapping. The bottom end is dead for Hyundai and power kicks in only after the mid-range.

How nimble is the Nissan Micra on Indian roads?

The 2019 Micra has a lot better handling and riding comforts than its predecessor. On-road, the car feels light on its feet, fast and accurate through corners. For a comfortable ride, the suspension plays a very vital role. The front suspension of Micra is McPherson Strut type that uses the top of a telescopic damper as the upper steering pivot. Or in other words, it combines a shock absorber and a coil spring into a single unit. This provides a more compact and lighter suspension system that is used for a front-wheel-drive vehicle.

Coming towards the rear suspension,  it is a Torsion Beam suspension in which two wheels are attached to the ends of a bar, which twists slightly when under load. Two trailing arms are joined together by a cross member, which itself also serves as an anti-roll bar and hence leads to Smooth Ride. It’s agile and very much responsive where the power steering comes to play. Turning the wheel feels like rotating the dial of your wristwatch!

How confidence-inspiring are the brakes on Nissan Micra?

In the braking system, the car has ventilated discs and drums at the rear with ABS, EBD, and BA. Anti-Lock Braking System comes into force when the brakes are applied, the wheels start slowing down faster than the others and through the ABS sensors, it can be detected. The system in response applies the brake of the wheel by maintaining the brake pressure to bring it back to normal speed.

Electronic Brake-Force Distribution is one of the features of ABS, which distributes the weight while hard-braking reducing the brake pressure on wheels. It helps in maintaining the stability of the vehicle.

Braking Assist is designed to detect sudden brakes and apply more brake force if the driver is braking too lightly. Maruti Suzuki Swift is the lightest car in this segment, where Nissan Micra and Hyundai Elite i20 shares the same curb weight.

How fuel-efficient is the Nissan Micra?

Nissan's decision to go with a CVT setup is smart as it helps chuck out better mileage figures as compared to manual gearboxes. The 1.2L engine is also well refined and has a flat curve which helps conserve fuel to the maximum without sacrificing on the fun factor.

Even after being on the heavier side, the Micra manages to chuck out an impressive 21 kmpl which is very close to the segment leader. It is impressive as of how Nissan managed to shove in a 41 L fuel tank into such a compact car.

Fuel Tank Capacity(Litres)

Maruti Suzuki Swift is the most fuel-efficient car in the above segment having the highest fuel capacity. Honda Jazz is the thirstiest of them all and it was expected for as the i-VTEC motor is not exactly the sober type. Hyundai Elite i20 comes close to that of Jazz's but with its list of modern features, it has more weightage here.

What are the exterior updated done on the 2020 Micra?

The all-new Nissan Micra is much more aggressive and sharp. It has adjustable headlamps, with chrome finish on Lower Front Grille. It has an additional cool feature i.e a Rear Spoiler on the top variants which give stability. It has ORVMS (Outside Rear View Mirrors) which are internally adjustable and the Front Fog Lamps produce a wider beam that has a short range of 25 meters to avoid any risk of dazzling due to diffraction caused by fog (small water droplets).

Other than that, the car remains more or less the same with the same turtle-like side profile which makes it a unique looking proposition on Indian roads. The headlights are now wrapped around and are a major factor of its newfound aggression.

It has a good mirror body colour and body-coloured door handles too. The Nissan Micra has a sporty design with aggressive curves which makes it more attractive. The recently launched Fashion Edition is focused on the younger generation with a dual-tone colour option and candy colours. The interior also gets bright coloured trimming which adds up to its youthfulness. It is surely the most radical-looking of the lot.

How comfy is the cabin of Nissan Micra?

The dashboard comes with a piano-black finish with upholstery fabric. The door handles have a chrome finish which gives you a quality feel. The steering wheel is quite comfortable and also comes with mounted audio controls and has a Bluetooth hands-free phone system which allows your phone to connect and make or receive calls without taking your hands off the wheel. This car comes with an automatic air-con system which keeps occupants comfortable at all times.

This car also comes with a 6.2-inch touchscreen infotainment system that has navigation through phone mirroring which enables complete convenience for the driver. Get your adrenaline out through a simple touch of a button. You can start the engine with a simple push-button and that adds up to the ease of usage. The cabin is spacious but legroom for rear passengers is not so great. It has 3 cup-holder right inside the driver’s armrest. The seats are comfortable, have enough hip room & shoulder room and it feels good. It has a height-adjustable driver’s seat. Overall, the interior is comfortable for any kind of rides.

How well-equipped is the infotainment system?

It has Xtronic CVT Automatic with an overdrive button which is optional in this car. This technology enables us to change gears seamlessly through a continuous range of effective gear ratios. This setup is very efficient and doesn't clatter. This makes up for a very silent driving experience. Thankfully for the infotainment system, the car doesn't feel dead!

So, it has an integrated 2-DIN audio system, with two front speakers and two rear speakers. A USB and Auxiliary input are also available. This car has Rain Sensing Wipers which automatically senses the rain and keeps the windshield clean.

The touchscreen is also laggy and stutters and the graphics would remind you of your first ever windows pc. The 4 speaker setup that is offered and is just about average but does get the job done. The infotainment comes with Bluetooth telephony and phone mirroring as the only things that you would be thankful for.

The car comes with NISSAN CONNECT which gives you the following features:

  • Lead Me To The Car: It turns on the Headlamps for you to track the car in a big parking area
  • Smart Drive Score: Its video analysis, predictive analytics, and personalized performance program help fleets improve driving skills, lower operating costs and deliver significant ROI

How spacious is the cargo space in Nissan Micra?

The boot-capacity isn't that great for a compact hatch and the competitors outshine the Nissan Micra in that case. But cargo space on offer on the Micra Active is plentiful for its size and one of it’s few redeeming features. The Micra Active comes with a 251-litre cargo area that can be accessed through a hydraulically operated tailgate.

2020 nissan micra cargo space

The larger proportions of the Micra Active help provide a decent opening and depth to the boot of the Micra Active and in a practical scenario, the Micra should easily be able to store your luggage for a fun weekend getaway. The addition of a 60:40 split rear seat would have opened up the cargo usability but alas it isn’t meant to be.

Boot Capacity(L)

You get a boot opening lever on the inside of the Nissan Micra that makes it easier to access the boot. For a car of its size, the volume provided is impressive but its nowhere near its competitors with Honda Jazz topping the list with over 350 L of volume followed by Maruti Suzuki Swift with over 300 L.

What are the various safety features on offer in the Micra?

With increased performance, style and smart features, the car is also safe. New Nissan Micra is constructed with the help of lightweight alloys which give rigidity while keeping the weight in control. Unlike Maruti, Nissan has a reputation for producing safer cars and it follows here as well.

Nissan Micra Safety features:

  • ABS (Anti-Lock Braking System): When the brakes are applied, the wheels start slowing down faster than the others and through the ABS sensors it can be detected. The system in response applies the brake of the wheel by maintaining the brake pressure to bring it back to normal speed.
  • EBD (Electronic Brake-Force Distribution): It is one of the features of ABS, which distributes the weight while hard-braking reducing the brake pressure on wheels. It helps in maintaining the stability of the vehicle.
  • BA (Braking Assist): It is designed to detect sudden brakes, and apply more brake force if the driver is braking too lightly.
  • Dual Airbags: In the case of front impact, the car has two standard airbags for driver and front passenger which gets deployed automatically.
  • Rear Parking Sensors & Rear View Camera: The parking sensors alert the driver whenever any obstacle is present behind the car and through the rearview camera, you can easily see what’s behind you.
  • Speed Sensing Door Locks: This system sets a threshold speed. And when the car reaches that speed, the doors automatically locked.

How does the competition stack up against Nissan Micra?

Nissan Micra vs Hyundai Elite i20

2020 hyundai elite i20

Hyundai has come a long way since its entry into India. It started out with the humble Santro and now put out cars in the premium sedan segment as well. The hatchback segment is taken care of by the Elite i20 which is a notch above Nissan Micra is all aspects. It is only in case of pricing that both the cars tally. It shows the immense value for the proposition which the Hyundai provides.

Nissan Micra vs Maruti Suzuki Swift

2020 maruti suzuki swift

You will for sure see a Maruti Suzuki Swift every one minute! That's how popular a car this is. It has the Maruti Suzuki badging which makes it utterly reliable and fuel efficiency is its forte! Nissan Micra doesn't stand a chance against the much more well-equipped Swift, but one sector in which the Nissan shines is in safety, Maruti Suzuki has a very sketchy name for safety but that alone isn't enough to dethrone the best-seller from MS.

Nissan Micra vs Honda Jazz

2020 honda jazz

Honda Jazz is the most spacious and practical one of this lot. Alas, it couldn't convey this to the masses and thus withered away soon. But it still is around and if you are up for precision Japanese engineering along with a spacious cabin and a fair list of features, then the Jazz is lit and the Micra is never a chance in front of this Honda.

Is the Nissan Micra still worth it?

Nissan has done a great job of improving the Micra. A bit more power, agility, fuel-efficiency, and aggressive looks make this hatchback a well-rounded bundle. The car feels good while driving but yes, in some areas it lags, like lack of legroom at the rear, leather padded steering wheel, lack of side airbags for rear passengers. But the competition has caught up and surpassed real fast and mild updates will not be enough for Nissan. It will need a proper overhaul to get back lost ground, and we might just get it!
