We pulled Flipkart's results for "smart bulb", "smart plug" and "smart door lock" on 25 September 2026 — 185 listings — and counted how many titles claim the thing the search asks for. Eight of the 71 smart bulb results state Wi-Fi, app control, Alexa or Google Assistant in their own title. Thirty-six mention a Bluetooth speaker, five are sewing-machine lamps and seven are star projectors. Twenty-four bulb listings share one stated MRP of Rs. 999 across 18 sellers, nine of them selling at the same Rs. 458, and 13 have never been rated. The plug shelf is healthier — 28 of 59 connected, from Rs. 640 — and the door lock shelf spans Rs. 285 to Rs. 25,999 with 15 of 41 unrated.

A tyre inflator advertises its headline spec in its own title, so we counted. We pulled Flipkart's car care results on 25 September 2026 — 194 listings, 56 of them inflators. All 56 print a psi figure, and 42 print exactly the same one: 150 psi. Those 42 sell from Rs. 646 to Rs. 6,999, a spread of 10.8 times behind one identical number. Divide price by claimed psi and the shelf inverts: the Rs. 213 listing claiming 300 psi is Rs. 0.71 a psi with 2,330 ratings, while the Rs. 6,999 one claiming 150 psi is Rs. 46.66 a psi with none. Ten more listings share one description under two brand names and nine model codes, all unrated.

We read both sock shelves on 25 September 2026 - 34 listings on AJIO, 54 on Myntra - and divided every price by the pack count its own title states. AJIO's median pair is Rs. 51.00 and Myntra's Rs. 80.32, so AJIO is about a third cheaper. But the cheapest pair anywhere, an AJIO five-pack at Rs. 17.80 a pair, sits just Rs. 2.62 below Myntra's cheapest - a twelve-pack at Rs. 20.42 a pair that carries 4.4 stars from 354 ratings. And that is the real split: 42 of Myntra's 54 listings publish a rating count, median 148 and up to 9,831, while none of AJIO's 34 publishes one. On both shelves the biggest discount badges sit on the packs that are already cheapest per pair.

We read AJIO's socks, gloves, muffler and thermal listings on 25 September 2026 - 139 with a price and a stated MRP, 21 seated here. Socks are the one item sold both singly and in packs, and dividing by the pack count the title states splits the shelf: 23 multipacks run at a median Rs. 31.67 a pair, 11 single pairs at Rs. 89. The badge runs the other way - 72 per cent on the multipacks, 46 on the singles. One brand sits at both ends: five pairs for Rs. 110, or a single pair for Rs. 550. Declared MRPs cluster on round numbers, with 18 of 139 declaring exactly Rs. 999, which is how a Rs. 39 pair earns a 92% badge. And not one of the 139 listings publishes a rating.

We read both luggage shelves on 25 September 2026 - 91 trolley and suitcase listings on AJIO, 78 on Tata CLiQ - and found eight brands and twenty declared MRPs on both, which makes a like-for-like comparison possible for once. At matched declared MRPs, AJIO is cheaper on every mass brand: a Teakwood Leathers hard shell declaring Rs. 8,199 is Rs. 1,230 against Rs. 1,799, and Aristocrat, Skybags, Benetton, Nasher Miles and Tommy Hilfiger run 8 to 19 per cent cheaper. Mokobara reverses it at all four shared MRPs, where Tata CLiQ is Rs. 501 to Rs. 2,128 cheaper. And neither shelf offers evidence: AJIO publishes a rating count on 0 of 91, Tata CLiQ on 37 of 78 with a median count of three and a maximum of ten.

We read Myntra's watch listings on 25 September 2026 — 80 in all, 64 of them ordinary wristwatches — and sorted them by whether the brand makes watches for a living. The 27 from Titan, Zoop, Casio, Sonata, Fastrack and Timex have a median discount of 0%, with 18 at exactly zero and not one above 50%. The other 37 have a median of 72%, with 25 at 70% or more. Both groups sell in the same money: Anouk's Rs. 1,831 watch wears a 72% badge off a stated Rs. 6,497, while Titan's Rs. 1,995 wears none. And this is not just a new-seller effect: Casio's 0%-off Vintage carries 25,967 ratings, WROGN's 76%-off analogue carries 16,341.

We read the watch shelves at AJIO, Myntra and Tata CLiQ on the same morning, 25 September 2026 — 194 listings. They are not three versions of one shelf. Myntra's median watch is Rs. 995, AJIO's Rs. 1,400, Tata CLiQ's Rs. 2,984; Myntra has 42 listings under Rs. 1,000 and none over Rs. 5,000, while Tata CLiQ has none under Rs. 1,000 and eight over Rs. 10,000. The sharpest difference is not price: not one of AJIO's 80 listings publishes a rating, against 66 of 80 on Myntra. And the watch houses hold their prices on both shops that stock them — Titan is at 0% off on Myntra and 3% on AJIO.

We read Tata CLiQ's candle, vase and wall art listings on 25 September 2026 - 78 with a price and a stated MRP, 57 of them at or under Rs. 2,000, and 21 seated here. This is a shelf with almost nothing published on it: only 17 of the 57 carry a rating at all, ten of those rest on exactly one rating, and the largest sample anywhere is 20. With no evidence to compare on, the badge does as it pleases: two bud vases Rs. 7 apart in price wear badges of 6% and 78%, because one declares an MRP of Rs. 299 and the other Rs. 1,300. Across the shelf the declared multiple runs from 1.07 times the selling price to 5.79 times, and it tracks the label, not the object.

We pulled Flipkart's sanitary pad, panty liner and menstrual cup results on 25 September 2026 and divided every price by the piece count the listing states — 177 listings read, 99 with a count we could read without guessing. One sanitary pad costs between Rs. 3.12 and Rs. 19.90, with a median of Rs. 5.20. The discount badge splits by brand recognition: the 27 familiar-name listings carry a median 40% badge and cost Rs. 6.39 a pad, the 23 lesser-known labels a 65% badge and Rs. 3.95. Twenty-nine listings are Cailin Care 155mm liners under 29 different product names, 27 of them with no rating at all — and on the cup shelf Pee Safe pools one rating count across three sizes while SIRONA publishes three separate ones.

We pulled Amazon's results for "almonds 1kg", "cashew 1kg" and "ghee 1 litre" on 25 September 2026 and divided every price by the weight the listing states — 120 listings read, 106 with a readable figure. A kilo of almonds costs Rs. 899 to Rs. 1,598 (median Rs. 1,128), a kilo of cashews Rs. 749 to Rs. 1,898, a litre of ghee Rs. 299 to Rs. 2,890. The cheap kilo and the low star rating arrive together: almonds under Rs. 1,000/kg average 3.44 stars on a median 18 reviews, those above it 4.02 on a median 2,530. Thirteen listings charge exactly Rs. 999 for a kilo of almonds, rated 2.1 to 5.0, and five Avogro cashew packs share one price of Rs. 879 with ratings of 1.2, 1.9, 2.2, 3.0 and 5.0.

Myntra sells real fresh flowers, through one seller, fnp — and every listing prints a stem count, so the whole shelf can be priced by the flower. We read all 50 on 25 September 2026. One stem costs between Rs. 62.44 and Rs. 554.80, median Rs. 147.43, a spread of 8.9 times. Roses alone run Rs. 66.60 to Rs. 199.88: a 20-rose vase is Rs. 1,449 while an 8-rose bouquet is Rs. 1,599, so the smaller one costs Rs. 150 more for twelve fewer roses. The discount badge takes exactly two values on this shelf — 27 listings at 10% off and 23 at 0%, nothing else — and not one of the fifty publishes a rating.

We read Tata CLiQ's perfume, eau de parfum, deodorant and body mist listings on 25 September 2026 - 355 with a price and a stated MRP, 248 of which print a bottle size in the title. Divide price by millilitres and the shelf sorts itself: deodorant runs at a median Rs. 3.17 a millilitre, body mist Rs. 7.16, eau de toilette Rs. 34.30 and eau de parfum Rs. 46.75 - a factor of 14.7 from bottom to top. The full range is 224-fold, from Rs. 0.99 to Rs. 222.40 a millilitre. The badge, meanwhile, says nothing: it sits at 20 to 25 per cent across all four types. And the bands overlap - 24 of 47 deodorants cost more per millilitre than the cheapest eau de parfum on the shelf.

We read Tata CLiQ's bedsheet, curtain, doormat and cushion results on 24 September 2026 — 79 listings with a selling price and a stated MRP. Fifty-four publish no rating at all, and the largest rating count on the entire shelf is twelve. Of the 25 rated listings, twelve are rated by one person and twelve show a perfect 5.0. Two HOSTA HOMES mats show 1.0 — also from one rating each. Meanwhile sixteen listings are sold as sets, so the ticket is not the price of a curtain: Bianca's faux silk pair at Rs. 326 is Rs. 163 a curtain, the cheapest here. And the badges repeat exactly — eight HOSTA HOMES listings declare precisely 2.72 times their price and all show 63% off.

We read Amazon's hair oil shelf on 24 September 2026 and divided every price by the millilitres the listing states — 37 listings qualify. The rates run from Rs. 25.80 to Rs. 396.00 per 100 ml, a fifteen-fold spread, against a median of Rs. 95.80. Pack size explains most of it, but not in the direction you would expect: Parachute's 330 ml bottle is Rs. 51.52 per 100 ml while its own 600 ml packs are Rs. 53.33 and Rs. 59.83. And the small-bottle penalty is steep — Mamaearth's Onion Hair Oil is Rs. 198.67 per 100 ml at 150 ml and Rs. 326.00 at 50 ml. This page prints no discount badges, because the MRP figures this shelf returns are per-unit rates rather than MRPs; we explain that in full below.

We read Nykaa's hair colour, shampoo, conditioner, serum, mask and oil listings on 24 September 2026 - 92 distinct listings with a price and a stated MRP, 22 seated here. All 92 publish a rating average and a count, which is not true of the marketplace beauty shelves we read the same week. That makes the count the number that matters: they run from 4 ratings to 544,080, median 8,448, and a 4.8 built on four people looks identical on a search page to a 4.4 built on half a million. The MRP multiples are tame - 1.01x to 2.08x, median badge 15.5% - and size variants share one rating pool, so two Love Beauty & Planet masks Rs. 205 apart both carry 42,085 ratings. The cheapest listing here is Rs. 90.
