Kia motors have somehow managed to attract a lot of buyers across India with the launch of its first car, the 2020 Kia Seltos. Since its inception, the Seltos has gained huge popularity in the midsize SUV category. Notably, Kia Seltos has been awarded as "Car of the year" by popular Autocar Awards 2020. For 2020, Autocar Indi has also awarded Kia motors with the title of "manufacture of the year". Recently, at the Auto Expo 2020, the South Korean carmaker showcased its second popular model Kia Carnival that will be brought to India via CKD(completely knocked down unit) route. Kia Motors has also planned for its further expansion in the all-electric segment with models like Kia Soul EV and e-Niro.

New Kia Seltos 2020 price in India starts at INR 9.89 Lakh and goes up to INR 14.09 Lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi).  Despite being a sister brand of the Korean auto giant Hyundai, you won’t find any similarities between the Seltos and Creta. The new Seltos SUV is priced competitively with an extensive choice of three engines, four transmissions, and multiple trim levels. The BS6-compliant Kia Seltos engine boast of refined power delivery along with a class-leading fuel economy. Kia Seltos competes with the likes of Hyundai Creta, MG Hector, and Nissan Kicks. Well, the real question still persists, on how will the Kia Seltos win customer trust as an all-new brand in India?

What we like:

  • Smart and compact design language
  • Feature loaded variants with 3 engine options
  • Competitively Priced
  • Feature loading with good ride quality
  • Class-leading mileage figures

What we don't:

  • After-sales and service is yet to be explored
  • No volume knob in the infotainment system

What’s new in 2020 Kia Seltos?

  • Making a fresh debut in 2019, Kia Seltos is still new in the segment
  • All available engine options are BS6-compliant

2020 Kia Seltos Variants and Pricing in India

Kia Seltos comes with three different engine options to choose from, which are further paired to four different gearboxes. All the variants and engines have been explained below:

Starting from an entry-level 1.5-liter naturally aspirated petrol engine the Seltos also offers a 1.4-litre turbocharged petrol engine and a 1.5-litre diesel burner which will be the most favored option in the Indian market considering the demand of fuel economy.

1.5-Litre NA Petrol

The 1.5-litre naturally aspirated inline 4 petrol burner is a rather modest engine option among the lineup. This engine produces 115 Bhp and 144 Nm of peak torque and comes paired with a 6-speed manual or an automatic transmission.

The Kia Seltos Petrol variants price starts at Rs.9.69 lakhs(ex-showroom, Delhi) and go all the way up to up to Rs.12.79 lakhs(ex-showroom, Delhi) and are segregated in four different variants.

1.5-litre turbocharged CRDi Diesel Engine

The  Kia Seltos diesel power unit comprises of a 1.5-litre turbocharged inline 4 motor which is good for 113 bhp and 250 Nm of peak torque. This unit can be paired either with a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed torque converter unit. The range of diesel-powered variants start from Rs.13.19 lakhs(ex) and go up to Rs.15.99 lakhs(ex) and is segregated in two variants.

Kia is reportedly looking to raise the prices of Seltos in India and each variant will cost Rs. 35,000 more than what it used to. Kia saw a decreased sales graph the first time since the brand's first car launch since August 2019. Over 40 thousand units of Kia Seltos were sold within 4 months of its launch topping the sales charts among the budget Compact SUVs but managed to sell just 4645 units in December 2019. In this difficult time of COVID-19 pandemic, where all carmakers are facing a dip in sales numbers, Kia has shown a good demand and uprise in the sales for March 2020. With strong booking numbers, Kia managed to sell around 7,466 units of Seltos in March this year.

Kia offers a long list of features in the Seltos which differ from variant to variant and can be configured according to the needs of the customers. Buyers also enjoy the liberty of configuring their Seltos as per their desire and taste. Till date, no other car manufacturer in India has displayed such generosity in this segment. Kia is, really trying to keep the wave high with this one.

Which variant should you opt for?

We recommend buying the 1.5-litre petrol engine HTK which retails around Rs. 9.99 lakhs(ex). For the price, it comes decently equipped with an intuitive touchscreen information system, rear backup camera and fog lamps. It is shaping up to be more value for money option.

For the performance-hungry buyers, the GTX variant priced at Rs.14.99 lakhs(ex) featuring the 1.4-litre turbocharged engine will be the best bet. A sporty look coupled with stability control makes it the perfect choice for drivers wanting to have some fun.

Kia Seltos April 2020 Offers and Discounts

Currently, there are no offers available on 2020 Kia Seltos BS6. However, booking period of 2-3 months is estimated.

How much power does the Kia Seltos engine return?

Kia Seltos holds its own, be it in terms of looks or performance. Let’s focus on performance first. To Power the Seltos, one has a choice between 3 engines.

To start with, there is an entry-level 1.5 litre inline 4 petrol engine, which can be coupled with either a 6-speed manual or an automatic transmission. This unit is rather modest in terms of performance and acceleration. However, it propels the Seltos to the 100 kmph mark from a standstill in around 13.7 seconds.

2020 kia seltos engine

To keep things interesting, Kia has plonked in a 1.4-litre inline 4 turbocharged GDi petrol engine which is a real hoot to drive. Power figures are rated at 138 Bhp and 242 Nm of peak torque from upwards of 1600 rpm until 5200 RPM. To put all that power down to the wheels, the transmission duties are handled by a 6-speed manual or a 7-speed DCT gearbox. Powered by this engine, the Seltos sprints to 100kmph from a standstill in only 9.7 seconds, which is pretty fast according to the segment standards.

Lastly, the diesel engine on the Kia Seltos is a 1.5-litre turbocharged inline 4 unit which is good for 113 bhp and 250 Nm of peak torque. This engine can be paired either with a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic transmission. For city commute, the diesel engine, with a 6-speed automatic gearbox, is the combination to go for. Although, it’ll be quite the opposite for the highway commutes.

We tested the 1.4-litre turbocharged GDi engine, the performance of the engine blew past our expectations. The 7-speed DCT gearbox is quick and takes minimum effort to adapt to your driving style. The engine is smooth with no noise leakage into the cabin at cruising speeds. However, if you floor the accelerator pedal, the gearbox downshifts promptly and is accompanied by a typical inline 4 grunt and harmony.

Now while the Tata Harrier and the MG Hector make power similar to that of the Kia Seltos, they do cost considerably more. The advantage Tata Harrier carries though is of torque. Being the class leader in torque may begin to justify its price.

How is the Kia Seltos ride quality in the city?

The Seltos SUV gets a firm suspension setup that makes the ride quality a bit of stiffer at low speeds. It is not uncomfortable and the 215/60 R17 tyres do their job pretty well. Especially, when you are driving the petrol version, the stiffness is quite noticeable on highways. The ride is enjoyable compared to what offered by the Hyundai Creta on similar terrain conditions. The best thing about Kia is that t ha maintained that "robust" nature in all its cars just like Renault Duster and Nissan Kicks.

2020 Kia Seltos ride and handling in city

Cornering in the Kia Seltos is smooth like never before. The SUV swifts nicely along the corners and make the overall ride balanced from all sides. The chassis is tight and body roll is well-mannered, so changes in directions bring in more confidence into the driver. With light steering, you will feel its weight once you increase the speed of the vehicle. However, we felt that the steering is heavier while driving in Sport mode. Things are at ease in 'Eco' and 'Normal' drive modes.

How bitey are the brakes on the 2020 Seltos?

Kia Seltos is an all-rounder in terms of the quality of materials used in every department. The front brakes are ventilated disc brakes coupled with drum brakes at the rear. Brake pedals feel firm and the ABS performs admirably under heavy braking.

2020 Kia Seltos wheel and tyre

The bite is laggy but you will get used to it in no time. There is a progressive nature for braking and it instils confidence in the noobiest of drivers with ease. The lower stance of this SUV also helps better braking performance and the vehicle doesn't fling much under hard braking.

How efficient are the 2020 Kia Seltos engines?

Most of the Indian car buyers thrive on the factor of fuel economy which is well taken care of by Kia. Seltos offers a good fuel economy in both petrol and diesel variants despite its size. The manual variants are curated for a better fuel economy whereas the automatic variants are more concentrated towards comfort all-the-while conserving efficiency.

MG Hector uses the sheer size to its utmost advantage as it packs the largest fuel tank which inturn helps for a longer range. The efficiency figures of Seltos are impressive as compared to its counterparts and Kia has surely caterly this car for the mileage conservative Indian audience!

How mesmerizing does the Kia Seltos look?

Kia Seltos takes a different take on Kia’s traditional design language. Its huge Tiger nose themed front grille and its black and chrome finishes give it a rather modest yet modern looking design. The crown jewelled LED headlights, as Kia calls it, looks beautiful with a complete floating LED DRL that extends all the way up to the merging point of the hood and headlight.

Remarkably, the 2020 Seltos SUV is based on an all-new platform. The 4,325 mm length of this SUV gives it a muscular yet compact appeal. This size makes the Seltos best fit in the midsize SUV segment. The dimensions of Kia Seltos are such that it comes along some prominent SUVs like Kicks and Duster. This makes its somewhere compact than SUVs like Mahindra XUV500, MG Hector, and Tata Harrier. With the right proportions, this 5-seater SUV offers a strong stance with city-commuting attire.

The Seltos’ chassis and body layout are made up of  73 percent high-strength steel, which keeps the weight balanced and offers better rigidity. The SUV feels lighter with all the necessary equipment packed within it.

Side profile of Kia Seltos is a rather beautiful angle to approach, as the windows flow towards the roof with a side cladding, holding on to the bulky wheel arches which house the beautifully finished diamond cut 17” alloy wheels. The slight raise of the roof rails give the Seltos a more rugged finish and adds character to its already rich look. The angular contour lines coming from the hood merge flawlessly with the bold shoulder lines.

Exterior Features:

  • 17-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels
  • LED lighting all-round
  • Sunroof
  • Shark-fin antenna
  • Generous chrome treatment all-round
  • Plastic cladding
  • Integrated roof rails

The rear looks rather busy with so many elements working together for attention which includes a flowing form LED taillights that are merged well with a bold chrome strip in between them. The taillights are shaped in an eye-catching vivid pattern. No matter how busy, the rear looks promising. It might seem that it aims to be like the popular kids at school but it truly carries its own identity.

2020 kia seltos rear profile

On the design front, the Tata Harrier steals the show. It is bold, bulky and has an aggressive stance to start with. Moreover, the car's Land Rover-ish styling seems to have a luxurious touch to it and with the introduction of its Harrier's Dark Edition, Tata has left no stone unturned this time around.

How well-equipped is the Kia Seltos on the inside?

Kia Seltos is as beautiful from the inside as it looks from the outside. There is absolutely no room for error in terms of materials used inside the cabin. The plush use of leatherette and high-quality soft-touch materials further enhances the lux-appeal of the car.

2020 Kia Seltos Dashboard

The dashboard of Kia Seltos looks and feels upmarket when compared to rivals in the segment. It also gives a good combination of outward visibility and accessibility of the physical buttons on and around the centre console. However, the absence of a volume knob can be cumbersome to alter the volume. However, it will be more of a problem for the passengers as the steering mounted volume controls will provide ease of use to the driver.

Kia Seltos is a practical 5-seater compact SUV with its broad and comfortable seats, out of which the front ones feature wide adjustability traits. They are firm and upright delivering a commanding view of the outside road. The cushion is slightly on a stiffer side, however, long drives won’t bother your comfort, thanks to the heavy bolstering that keep the body roll contained. Also, the rear bench has a wide thigh support pad that offers good seating space for three medium-sized people.

2020 kia seltos front and rear seats

The seats are finished in black leatherette material with white contrast stitching(for GT Line trims) The cushioning of the seats is right where it needs to be for an SUV of that size. The seats will ensure immense comfort in every situation, be it highway travel or a slow pass through an unpaved patch.

What are the various infotainment features on offer?

Kia has set a benchmark in the Indian market for being a manufacturer to offer a wide range of infotainment options in the compact SUV segment. The range starts from an 8.0-inch touchscreen unit and goes up to a 10.25-inch unit along with a Heads-up display which shows the information in a very clear and crisp manner. Furthermore, the speakers can be upgraded from a 6-speaker system to 10-speaker BOSE units, all of that in just a few variants, pretty impressive.

2020 kia seltos infotainment system

Turn on the infotainment system and you’ll be greeted by a big 10.25-inch touch screen display. The placement of the screen is positioned keeping the reachability of driver in mind. Equipped with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, the infotainment system is supported by the ARKAMYS sound processing unit. The display is crisp and clear even under full brightness. The touch response is fast and feels smooth on operating.

Kia Seltos comes preloaded with UVO mobile connectivity feature. This allows the user to interact with the vehicle via a mobile device. The UVO mobile feature has features such as the ability to remotely lock/unlock the car. 36 os such intuitive features are packed in it.  All these features are categorized under five major parameters which are: Navigation, Safety and Security, Vehicle Management, Remote Control and convenience. UVO mobile service will be free for the first three years. Some of the highlighted features of the UVO mobile service are:

Infotainment Features:

  • AI (artificial intelligence) voice command
  • Android Auto and Apple CarPlay
  • Stolen vehicle tracking and immobilizing
  • Auto collision notification
  • SOS emergency assistance
  • Remote in-car air quality monitor
  • Safety alert (geo, time, speed, idle and valet)

How dashingly spacious is the Kia Seltos cargo area?

Kia Seltos offers a good 433 litres of boot space which can be further increased by folding down the 60:40 split-folding rear seats. If you look at the image closely, the wheel walls are not equally contoured and this is done to aggressively increase cargo space and due to the fuel tank inlet on one side!

2020 kia seltos cargo space

The boot lid of Kia Seltos opens tall and wide thus enhancing the overall loading/unloading tasks. However, the trunk lid on the MG Hector is electronically operated which takes it a step ahead of the rivals along with class-leading boot space.

What are the various safety features backing up this bad-ass SUV?

Safety is considered as one of the key factors deciding the fate of any model in the market. Kia has done its homework to make Seltos as safe as possible. Standard safety features include dual airbags for the front passengers in the entry-level variant while the top models get 6-airbags.

Kia Seltos Safety features

The construction of the chassis is done in a combination of aluminium and steel which gives it the required strength while keeping a check on the curb weight of the vehicle. Kia Seltos doesn't have a Global NCAP crash test rating yet, so stay tuned for our thoughts on that.

Kia Seltos vs stong competition; What's the stand?

Kia Seltos vs Hyundai Creta

Hyundai has dominated the market and has been offering feature-rich models for long. The Creta is no different. However, with the arrival of Kia Seltos, there is going to be a tough faceoff between the two as they are similarly priced with Kia offering a better set of equipment and features.

2020 hyundai creta

The Hyundai Creta has aged out in terms of design, which is, clearly overshadowed by the striking hot presence of Kia Seltos. If you are confused between the Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos, we’d recommend you go for the latter as its a better value for money proposition while also bringing along a fresh face that sets it apart from the crowd.

Kia Seltos vs MG Hector

MG Hector is a technological marvel, at least in the segment, if we conclude. The wide range of advanced features and connectivity options stacks it way ahead of its rivals in terms of in-cabin user experience. In terms of exterior dimensions, MG Hector jumps ahead of the Kia Seltos. However, it beats the purpose of a compact SUV, making it difficult to live with the car within city limits.

2020 mg hector

The essence of a Chinese brand will take a lot of time to gel into the Indian automotive aroma which has already been done by Kia. If you are looking for an advanced gadget house on wheels then MG Hector is the way to go otherwise Kia Seltos is an overall better product.

Kia Seltos vs Tata Harrier

Tata has really worked hard on this one and it shows. The Jaguar-LandRover platform used for the Harrier is just the tip of this iceberg. It is well-built and has been engineered from the ground up. Powertrain and other feature options are strong and so it makes up for a wonderful package and, we forgot to tell about its insanely handsome looks. Kia Seltos has a worthy contender on its hands and it will be interesting to see how things turn out. It's good to see an in-breed automaker making strides and Kia better watch out!

Is the 2020 Kia Seltos worth buying?

Kia surely did their homework to offer the Indians a very good product. Seltos is a bang for the buck in the compact SUV segment and will be a rock-solid competitor in the coming years. The overall quality of materials used inside and outside is a total deal-breaker for many rivals. The analogy of a fresh design and choice of customization to a customer is a very huge benefit to the Korean manufacturer to grab the roots of this popular segment. Yes, you should buy the Kia Seltos.

It is the best value for money product in the compact SUV segment. Attractive designing, powerful engine options and class-leading fuel economy are the factors that make it the most optimum choice over others.
