Over the period of the last 5 years, the compact SUV segment in India has gained huge popularity. The Korean manufacturer, Kia, is the latest entrant to this hot-selling segment. Their Seltos has taken this ground with fire, making it tough for the competitors to stay onboard. It is almost safe to say that it is a bestseller in the making. Also, it has been crowned as "Car of the year" by Autocar Awards 2020. With such recognition, Kia has successfully grabbed the title of "Manufacturer of the Year" at the Autocar Awards 2020.

Kia Seltos competes with the likes of Hyundai Creta, recently launched MG Hector and Nissan Kicks.

1.5-liter turbocharged CRDi Diesel

The diesel engine on the Kia Seltos is a 1.5-liter turbocharged inline 4 motor which is good for 113 bhp and 250 Nm of peak torque. This unit can be paired either with a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed torque converter unit. The range of diesel-powered variants start from Rs.13.19 lakhs(ex) and go up to Rs.15.99 lakhs(ex) and is segregated in two variants.

Kia is reportedly looking to raise the prices of Seltos in India and each variant will cost Rs. 35,000 more than what it used to. Kia saw a decreased sales graph the first time since the brand's first car launch since August 2019. Over 40 thousand units of Kia Seltos were sold within 4 months of its launch topping the sales charts among the budget Compact SUVs but managed to sell just 4645 units in December 2019.

Kia offers a long list of features in the Seltos which differ from variant to variant and can be configured according to the needs of the customers. Buyers also enjoy the liberty of configuring their Seltos as per their desire and taste. Till date, no other car manufacturer in India has displayed such generosity in this segment. Kia is really trying to keep the wave high with this one.

What variant should you buy?

We recommend buying the 1.5-liter petrol engine HTK which retails around Rs. 9.99 lakhs(ex). For the price, it comes decently equipped with an intuitive touchscreen information system, rear backup camera and fog lamps. It is shaping up to be more value for money option.

For the performance-hungry buyers, the GTX variant priced at Rs.14.99 lakhs(ex) featuring the 1.4-liter turbocharged engine will be the best bet. A sporty look coupled with stability control makes it the perfect choice for drivers wanting to have some fun.

For people looking for diesel options, the HTK+ variant will be the optimum choice which is priced at Rs.13.19 lakhs(ex).

Kia Seltos Power and Performance

Kia Seltos holds its own, be it in terms of looks or performance. Let’s focus on performance first. To Power the Seltos, one has a choice between 3 engines.

To start off, there is an entry-level 1.5 liter inline 4 petrol engine, which can be coupled with either a 6-speed manual or an automatic transmission. This unit is rather modest in terms of performance and acceleration. However, it propels the Seltos to the 100 kmph mark from a standstill in around 13.7 seconds.

To keep things interesting, Kia has plonked in a 1.4-liter inline 4 turbocharged GDi petrol engine which is a real hoot to drive. Power figures are rated at 138 Bhp and 242 Nm of peak torque from upwards of 1600 rpm until 5200 rpm. To put all that power down to the wheels, the transmission duties are handled by a 6-speed manual or a 7-speed DCT gearbox. Powered by this engine, the Seltos sprints to 100kmph from a standstill in only 9.7 seconds, which is pretty fast according to the segment standards.

Lastly, the diesel engine on the Kia Seltos is a 1.5-liter turbocharged inline 4 unit which is good for 113 bhp and 250 Nm of peak torque. This engine can be paired either with a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic transmission. For city commute, the diesel engine, with a 6-speed automatic gearbox, is the combination to go for. Although, it’ll be quite the opposite for the highway commutes.

We tested the 1.4-litre turbocharged GDi engine, the performance of the engine blew past our expectations. The 7-speed DCT gearbox is quick and takes minimum effort to adapt to your driving style. The engine is smooth with no noise leakage into the cabin at cruising speeds. However, if you floor the accelerator pedal, the gearbox downshifts promptly and is accompanied by a typical inline 4 grunt and harmony.

Now while the Tata Harrier and the MG Hector make power similar to that of the Kia Seltos, they do cost considerably more. The advantage Tata Harrier carries though is of torque. Being the class leader in torque may begin to justify its price.

Rivals more closely priced to the Seltos are the Hyundai Creta, Nissan Kicks and the Renault Captur. Despite the price, they are much underpowered when compared to the Seltos.

Amidst the chaos of upcoming BS6 fuel emission norms, Kia is taking a chill pill, as all of their engines are BS6 compliant even with BS4 fuels.

Does it stop as well as it accelerates?

Kia Seltos is an all-rounder in terms of the quality of materials used in every department. The front brakes are ventilated disc brakes coupled with drum brakes at the rear. Brake pedals feel firm and the ABS performs admirably under heavy braking. The initial bite from the brake is a little late but still makes it stop in a short distance.

Kia Seltos Petrol and Diesel Mileage vs Competition

Most of the Indian car buyers thrive on the factor of fuel economy which is well taken care of by Kia. Seltos offers a good fuel economy in both petrol and diesel variants despite its size. The manual variants are curated for a better fuel economy whereas the automatic variants are more concentrated towards comfort.

Kia Seltos Exterior Design and Image Gallery

KIA Seltos takes a different take on Kia’s traditional design language. Its huge Tiger nose themed front grille and its black and chrome finishes give it a rather modest yet modern looking design. The crown jeweled LED headlights, as Kia calls it, looks beautiful with a complete floating LED DRL that extends all the way up to the merging point of the hood and headlight.

Kia Seltos GT-Line front view

The rear looks rather busy with so many elements working together for attention which includes a flowing form LED taillights that are merged well with a bold chrome strip in between them. The taillights are shaped in an eye-catching vivid pattern. No matter how busy, the rear looks promising. It might seem that it aims to be like the popular kids at school but it truly carries its own identity.

Side profile of Kia Seltos is a rather beautiful angle to approach, as the windows flow towards the roof with a side cladding, holding on to the bulky wheel arches which house the beautifully finished diamond cut 17” alloy wheels. The slight raise of the roof rails give the Seltos a more rugged finish and adds character to its already rich look. The angular contour lines coming from the hood merge flawlessly with the bold shoulder lines.

Kia Seltos rear 3rd-quarter view

On the design front, the Tata Harrier steals the show. It is bold, bulky and has an aggressive stance to start with. Moreover, the car's Land Rover-ish styling seems to have a luxurious touch to it and with the introduction of its Harrier's Dark Edition, Tata has left no stone unturned this time around.

Kia Seltos Interior and Features

Kia Seltos is as beautiful from the inside as it looks from the outside. There is absolutely no room for error in terms of materials used inside the cabin. The plush use of leatherette and high-quality soft-touch materials further enhances the lux-appeal of the car.

Kia Seltos interior

The dashboard of Kia Seltos looks and feels upmarket when compared to rivals in the segment. It also gives a good combination of outward visibility and accessibility of the physical buttons on and around the center console. However, the absence of a volume knob can be cumbersome in order to alter the volume. However, it will be more of a problem for the passengers as the steering mounted volume controls will provide ease of use to the driver.

Seating and Comfort

Kia Seltos is a practical 5-seater compact SUV with its broad and comfortable seats, out of which the front ones feature wide adjustability traits. They are firm and upright delivering a commanding view of the outside road. The cushion is slightly on a stiffer side, however, long drives won’t bother your comfort, thanks to the heavy bolstering that keep the body roll contained. Also, the rear bench has a wide thigh support pad that offers good seating space for three medium-sized people.

Kia Seltos Seats

The seats are finished in black leatherette material with white contrast stitching. The cushioning of the seats is right where it needs to be for an SUV of that size. The seats will ensure immense comfort in every situation, be it highway travel or a slow pass through an unpaved patch.

Cargo

Kia Seltos offers a good 433 liters of boot space which can be further increased by folding down the 60:40 split-folding rear seats. MG Hector leads the segment in terms of boot space with its huge 587 liters of the trunk, while others fall somewhere in the same range as Kia Seltos. The Renault Captur has the smallest boot of the bunch, with 392 liters.

Infotainment

Kia has set a benchmark in the Indian market for being a manufacturer to offer a wide range of infotainment options in the compact SUV segment. The range starts from an 8.0-inch touchscreen unit and goes up to a 10.25-inch unit along with a Heads-up display which shows the information in a very clear and crisp manner. Furthermore, the speakers can be upgraded from a 6-speaker system to 10-speaker BOSE units, all of that in just a few variants, pretty impressive.

Kia Seltos Infotainment system

Turn on the infotainment system and you’ll be greeted by a big 10.25-inch touch screen display. The placement of the screen is positioned keeping the reachability of driver in mind. Equipped with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, the infotainment system is supported by the ARKAMYS sound processing unit. The display is crisp and clear even under full brightness. The touch response is fast and feels smooth on operating.

Kia Seltos comes preloaded with UVO mobile connectivity feature. This allows the user to interact with the vehicle via a mobile device. The UVO mobile feature has features such as the ability to remotely lock/unlock the car. 36 os such intuitive features are packed in it.  All these features are categorized under five major parameters which are: Navigation, Safety and Security, Vehicle Management, Remote Control and convenience. UVO mobile service will be free for the first three years. Some of the highlighted features of UVO mobile service are:

  • AI (artificial intelligence) voice command

  • Stolen vehicle tracking and immobilizing

  • Auto collision notification

  • SOS emergency assistance

  • Remote in-car air quality monitor

  • Safety alert (geo, time, speed, idle and valet)

Kia Seltos Safety and Security Features

Safety is considered as one of the key factors deciding the fate of any model in the market. Kia has done its homework to make Seltos as safe as possible. Standard safety equipment features include dual airbags for the front passengers in the entry-level variant while the top models get 6-airbags. The construction of the chassis is done in a combination of aluminum and steel which gives it the required strength while keeping a check on the curb weight of the vehicle.

Kia Seltos doesn't have a Global NCAP crash test rating yet, so stay tuned for our thoughts on that.

How much warranty does Kia offers on Seltos?

Kia Seltos is offered with a standard warranty of 3 years and unlimited kilometers.

Kia Seltos vs Competition

Kia Seltos Vs Hyundai Creta

Hyundai has dominated the market and has been offering feature-rich models for long. The Creta is no different. However, with the arrival of Kia Seltos, there is going to be a tough faceoff between the two as they are similarly priced with Kia offering a better set of equipment and features.

The Hyundai Creta has aged out in terms of design, which is clearly overshadowed by the striking hot presence of Kia Seltos. If you are confused between the Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos, we’d recommend you go for the latter as its a better value for money proposition while also bringing along a fresh face that sets it apart from the crowd.

Kia Seltos Vs MG Hector

MG Hector is a technological marvel, at least in the segment, if we conclude. The wide range of advanced features and connectivity options stacks it way ahead of its rivals in terms of in-cabin user experience. In terms of exterior dimensions, MG Hector jumps ahead of the Kia Seltos. However, it beats the purpose of a compact SUV, making it difficult to live with the car within city limits.

The essence of a Chinese brand will take a lot of time to gel into the Indian automotive aroma which has already been done by Kia. If you are looking for an advanced gadget house on wheels then MG Hector is the way to go otherwise Kia Seltos is an overall better product.

Final Verdict

Kia surely did their homework to offer the Indians a very good product. Seltos is bang for the buck in the compact SUV segment and will be a rock-solid competitor in the coming years. The overall quality of materials used inside and outside is a total deal-breaker for many rivals. The analogy of a fresh design and choice of customization to a customer is a very huge benefit to the Korean manufacturer to grab the roots of this popular segment. Yes, you should buy the Kia Seltos. It is the best value for money product in the compact SUV segment. Attractive designing, powerful engine options and class-leading fuel economy are the factors that make it the most optimum choice over others.
