Sample of CAT Score Card

Normalisation of CAT score

CAT is conducted in two sessions, i.e., the morning and afternoon sessions. And both the sessions had a different form of questions. In order to ensure fairness and equality in the performance of the candidate, the scores are subjected to the process of normalisation. The scaled scores are obtained after normalisation, and then they are converted into percentiles for the selection process.

CAT Scaled Score Calculation

Calculate the scaled score of each section and then add the scaled score of all the three sections which are VARC, DILR and QA, to obtain the overall scaled score. Here we will be taking the QA section as an example to calculate the scaled score. Follow the following steps mentioned below:

  • Calculate the mean(M) and the standard deviation (SD) of the raw scores in the QA section for all the candidates appearing in the morning session.

Let Mean = M1 and Standard Deviation (SD) = S1, then G1 = M1 + S1

  • Then calculate the mean and the standard deviation of the raw scores in the QA section for all the candidates appearing in the morning session.
Let Mean = M2 and Standard Deviation (SD) = S2, then G2 = M2 + S2.
  • Now calculate the mean and standard deviation of the raw scores in the QA section of all the candidates (i.e., both morning and evening session)appearing in CAT.
Let mean = M and standard deviation (SD) = S, then G = M + S
  • The raw score (R) for the morning session will be calculated as:Calculate the mean raw score of the top 0.1% candidates in the morning session and denote it by M1 0.1
  • Calculate the mean raw score of top 0.1% candidates in the afternoon session and denote it by M2 0.1
  • Calculate the mean raw score of top 0.1% candidates appearing in CAT, including both morning and afternoon sessions. Denote this by MM 0.1

R = (R - G1) x (M 0.1 - G/ M1 0.1 - G1) + G

The raw score for the afternoon session will be calculated as:

R = (R - G2) x (M 0.1 - G/ M2 0.1 - G2) + G

Percentile Score Calculation

Candidates can calculate their sectional and overall percentile score by following the steps mentioned below. Here, we are taking the QA section as an example. Other sections will be calculated in the same way.

  • Calculate the total number of candidates (N) who appeared for the CAT exam, including both morning and afternoon sessions.
  • Based on the scaled scores obtained in the QA section, assign a rank (r) to yourself. Identical ranks will be assigned if two or more candidates obtain the same scaled score in the QA section. For example, If two candidates obtain the highest scaled score, they will be given rank one and the second-highest scaled score holder will be given rank three and so on.
  • Calculate the percentile score (P) of the QA section by using the following formula:

? = ( (?−?) ? ) × 100

  • Round of the percentile score(P) up to two decimal points.
