Five rules for buying countertop kitchen appliances

First: divide the price by the stated litres before comparing anything, and know that a microwave litre and an air fryer litre are not the same purchase - one reheats a family meal, the other crisps a portion for two. Second: read the wattage as capability, not marketing - under 500W a mixer stalls on wet masala, and 2000W is what actually crisps frozen food in an air fryer, the same per-unit method we used on the Croma kitchen shelf. Third: buy convection rather than solo if you ever want to bake or brown, because a solo microwave cannot do either at any price. Fourth: treat multi-function claims as software - six-in-one is one element at six settings. Fifth: with no ratings published anywhere in this catalogue, weight your choice towards brands whose service engineer can actually reach you, the same conclusion we came to across the monsoon appliance shelf.

What we skipped — and why

What we skipped, and why: 55 of the 74 rows. The biggest blocks are LG with nine listings at a median Rs. 14,490 and IFB with eight at Rs. 12,490, most of them convection microwaves between 20 and 32 litres whose per-litre economics sit inside the range this page already describes, and Ninja with five at a median Rs. 15,999, largely multi-basket machines above Rs. 15,000 that are a different purchase from the single-basket fryers here. We also left out a tail of hand blenders, choppers and kettles under Rs. 1,500 that repeat chapter one without adding a figure, four built-in hobs and chimneys that arrived through the kitchen-appliances path and belong on a fitted-kitchen page rather than a countertop one, and every listing whose title stated no capacity at all, since a page organised around price per litre cannot seat a machine that does not publish its litres. Nothing was excluded for being a bad product; with no ratings in this catalogue, nothing could be.

What we look for

We price both formats by the litre, because that is what exposes the difference

A litre of microwave cavity on this shelf costs Rs. 312 to Rs. 482. A litre of air fryer basket costs Rs. 667 to Rs. 1,833 - between two and four times as much, for a machine that holds less food and cooks fewer things. That is not an argument against air fryers, which do something a microwave cannot: they crisp. It is an argument for knowing what the premium is before paying it, and for noticing that within the air fryer chapter alone the identical 4.2-litre basket sells at Rs. 667 and Rs. 1,833 a litre. We state the figure on every card that has a stated capacity.

We read the badge as brand discipline rather than as a saving

The challenger and marketplace brands on this shelf discount hardest - KENT at a median 58 per cent across four listings, Morphy Richards at 54 across four, Wonderchef at 47 across four, Lifelong at 78 on the single listing we seated - while the incumbents hold their prices: Philips at a median 23 per cent across five, Panasonic at 23 across five, IFB at 28 across eight, Ninja at 29 across five. The shelf median is 35 per cent. So a deep badge here identifies the kind of company rather than the quality of the machine, and we quote each brand's own median on the card.

We attach no rating pill anywhere, because Vijay Sales publishes none

Not one of the 74 rows in this read carries a customer rating or a rating count. For countertop appliances that is a real loss, because the things that decide whether one of these lasts - whether the fan bearing whines after a year, whether the non-stick survives, whether the touch panel keeps responding in a steamy kitchen - are precisely what a large review sample surfaces and no specification sheet states. With none available we have leaned on wattage, capacity, coating material, fan configuration and which brands have a service engineer within reach.

We name the capability limit, because the listing sells the feature list

Four limits decide whether one of these machines suits you and none is a headline. A solo microwave cannot brown anything at all; only a convection model bakes. Under about 500 watts a mixer stalls on Indian wet masala, so 750W is the working floor. An air fryer's stated basket litres considerably overstate how much food fits, and a 4.5-litre machine feeds two. And multi-function claims - six-in-one, eleven presets, fifty-one auto-cook menus - describe software running one heating element, not additional hardware. We put each on the relevant card.

FAQs

Is an air fryer better value than a microwave?

They are not competing purchases, and the per-litre arithmetic shows how differently they are priced. In our August 12, 2026 read of 74 Vijay Sales listings, a litre of microwave cavity cost between Rs. 312 and Rs. 482, while a litre of air fryer basket cost between Rs. 667 and Rs. 1,833 - two to four times as much. A microwave reheats and defrosts a family's food quickly and, in a convection model, bakes and browns; an air fryer crisps a portion for two or four using circulating hot air and very little oil, which a microwave cannot do at all. If you can only buy one and you cook for a family, a 23 or 28 litre convection microwave does more jobs per rupee. If you already have a microwave and what you miss is crisp - chips, nuggets, tikka, reheated samosas that are not soggy - an air fryer is the machine that adds something, and Rs. 2,800 is enough to find out whether you will use it.

What size air fryer should I buy?

Larger than the litre figure suggests, because basket capacity considerably overstates usable food volume. A 4.2 or 4.5 litre basket, which is the most common size on this shelf, comfortably does a meal for two or a side dish for four; food has to sit in a single layer for the air to circulate, so filling the basket to its nominal volume produces steamed food rather than crisp food. Six litres and up is a family size, and the 8 litre machine on this page is the point at which an air fryer starts replacing an oven rather than supplementing it. Two other things to check while sizing: whether the model has a viewing window, because opening the basket to look drops the temperature by tens of degrees every time, and whether it will physically fit under your kitchen cabinets, since these machines are taller than the photographs suggest and need clearance above for the exhaust.

Why do KENT and Morphy Richards discount 55 per cent when Philips discounts 23?

Because the badge on this shelf identifies the kind of company rather than the quality of the machine. In our read the challenger and marketplace brands ran deep - KENT at a median 58 per cent across four listings, Morphy Richards at 54 across four, Wonderchef at 47 across four - while the incumbents held: Philips and Panasonic at a median 23 per cent each, IFB at 28, Ninja at 29, against a shelf median of 35. Philips created the domestic air fryer category and its patented airflow design genuinely cooks more evenly than most; a brand in that position sets a price close to what it intends to charge and moves it a little. A newer brand sets a high stated MRP and sells far below it, which produces a large number on the tile. Compare the selling prices across brands and the badges only within one - and read a 33 per cent Ninja badge as unusual, because it is.

Do I need a convection microwave or is a solo model enough?

It depends on one question: do you want to bake or brown anything. A solo microwave heats food with microwaves alone - it reheats, defrosts and cooks in a wet fashion, and it cannot brown a surface or bake a cake at any setting. A convection model adds a conventional heating element and a fan to the cavity, which turns it into a small oven; that is the entire difference, and on this page it costs about Rs. 4,000 more. Two practical points. First, if you already have an air fryer, most of what convection adds you can already do, and a cheap solo microwave alongside it is the more sensible pair. Second, size matters more than menu counts: 20 litres will not take a standard casserole with room for the turntable to rotate, and 28 litres will. Auto-cook menu counts - 12 against 51 against 251 - are the least useful specification on any of these listings.

Which pick on this page is the best buy?

For most kitchens, the Haier 20-litre solo microwave at Rs. 6,240 - Rs. 312 a litre is the cheapest volume on the whole shelf, and if you only ever reheat and defrost, nothing dearer does that job better. If you want to bake, the LG 28-litre convection at Rs. 13,490 is the size at which a full dish actually fits and rotates. On air fryers, the Lifelong 4.2-litre at Rs. 2,800 is the cheapest basket volume here at Rs. 667 a litre and the right way to find out whether you will use one, with the caveat that cheap fryers cook unevenly and want shaking halfway. If you already know you will use it daily, the Kent 8-litre at Rs. 6,449 is the largest basket on the page at Rs. 806 a litre and has the viewing window that makes daily use tolerable. And for wet grinding, do not go below the 750W Wonderchef at Rs. 3,299.

How Zoutons picks deals Zoutons may earn a commission when you buy through links on this page. Every price, stated MRP and discount percentage here was read on August 12, 2026 from vijaysales.com's own server-rendered category pages across five paths - air-fryers, microwave-ovens, mixer-grinders, otg and kitchen-appliances - with duplicate SKUs removed, and all of them can change without notice. That yielded 74 rows, of which we seated 19. The derived figures we quote - that microwave cavity on this shelf costs Rs. 312 to Rs. 482 per stated litre and air fryer basket Rs. 667 to Rs. 1,833; that the median badge is 58 per cent across four KENT listings, 54 across four Morphy Richards, 47 across four Wonderchef, 37 across five Haier, 35 across nine LG, 29 across five Ninja, 28 across eight IFB and 23 across five Philips and five Panasonic listings; and that the shelf median is 35 per cent - are ours, calculated from those rows using the capacity each listing states in its own title. Air fryer basket capacity is a nominal figure that overstates usable food volume, and it is not measured to a common standard between brands. Because our pull fixed five category paths and this site renders one page of products per path, these findings describe the listings we read rather than the whole of Vijay Sales' kitchen range. A stated MRP is the seller's own figure and we have not verified that any product here was ever sold at it. Vijay Sales returned no customer rating on any of the 74 rows. We have not plugged in, heated, cooked with or cleaned anything on this page, and all wattage, capacity, coating, fan and preset claims are quoted from the listings as the seller's own wording, reported and not endorsed. High-wattage appliances need a socket and circuit rated for them; check yours before ordering.
