“A 25-litre tank at Rs. 6,999. A six-litre one at Rs. 8,349. The water is identical; the price per litre is five times apart.” Zoutons Editorial Team

Five rules for buying a geyser or purifier

First: divide the price by the litres before you compare anything - on this shelf that number runs from Rs. 206 to Rs. 1,575 for the same water, and buying bigger is almost always buying cheaper. Second: measure the wall before you order, because a horizontal tank fits above a door where a vertical one does not, and this is the specification people get wrong. Third: test your water's TDS before choosing between UV and RO; that decision is worth Rs. 8,000 and no badge on this page comes close to it. Fourth: ask the annual filter-change price on any purifier, because the lifetime cost lives there and no listing states it - the same buried running cost we found across the cleaning appliance aisle. Fifth: treat the BEE star rating as a running-cost decision, not a quality one - within one brand here the fifth star costs Rs. 1,700 at identical capacity, and it only pays back if you heat water daily, the same arithmetic we ran on the wattage read.

What we skipped — and why

What we skipped, and why: 64 of the 84 rows. Unusually for a shelf we read, almost none of them went out for repetition - 84 listings resolve to 75 distinct stated MRPs and 75 distinct selling prices, so nothing here shares a tier the way a fashion catalogue does. What we left out instead was capacity duplication: seventeen more geysers at 10, 15 and 25 litres from Aquaguard, Havells, Racold, V-Guard, Bajaj and Crompton that sit inside the per-litre range this page already covers, and twelve more instant heaters between Rs. 3,000 and Rs. 5,000 that repeat the small-tank premium chapter two describes. On the purifier side we left out fourteen further RO machines between Rs. 12,000 and Rs. 31,990, mostly from Aquaguard and KENT, whose feature lists differ only in the number of decorative stages, and the whole of the sub-Rs. 5,000 gravity-purifier tail, which is a different product category. Nothing was excluded for being a bad product; with the largest rating sample in the read at 17 votes, nothing could be.

What we look for

We price every geyser per litre of stored water before anything else

Across the 42 geysers in this read the cost per litre runs from Rs. 206 to Rs. 1,575 - a 7.6x range for the same commodity - against a median of Rs. 625. Every one of the ten cheapest litres sits in a 25-litre tank, and the single cheapest listing on the whole shelf, a Rs. 2,999 three-litre instant heater, is among the dearest water on it at Rs. 1,000 a litre. So we rank this shelf by rupees per litre rather than by price or by badge, and we state that number on every geyser card, because it is the only figure that makes a six-litre and a twenty-five-litre listing comparable.

We separate UV from RO before comparing any two purifiers

These are different machines for different water and the listings blur them. UV kills bacteria and viruses and removes nothing dissolved, which is correct for treated municipal supply and useless on borewell or tanker water; RO removes dissolved solids and wastes water doing it. In our read the 16 non-RO purifiers had a median price of Rs. 10,545 against Rs. 18,925 for the 26 RO machines, so getting this decision right is worth roughly Rs. 8,000 - far more than any discount on this page. We name which technology each machine uses on its card and we do not rank one against the other.

We attach no rating pill anywhere, because the samples are too small

Only 34 of the 84 rows carry a rating at all, and the largest sample anywhere in the read is 17 votes. The best average we found, a 4.8, rests on six ratings; the worst, a 3.1, rests on seven. Neither is evidence. We quote every rating and its count in the specification line so readers can see exactly how thin the basis is, and we rank on none of them - which in this category is less costly than it sounds, because a geyser's real performance is decided by your water hardness and your supply voltage rather than by a consensus.

We report the specifications that decide lifetime cost, not the ones on the box

Four things determine what one of these appliances actually costs you. Capacity, priced per litre above. The BEE star rating, which is standing heat loss and only pays back if you heat water daily - within one brand's range here the fifth star costs Rs. 1,700 at the same capacity. The tank lining and element coating, which are what hard water attacks, and which matter enormously in some Indian cities and not at all in others. And on purifiers, the annual filter change and membrane replacement, which is where the lifetime cost sits and which no listing on this shelf states. We flag each on the relevant card.

FAQs

What size geyser should I buy?

Bigger than you think, because capacity is the cheapest thing on this shelf. In our August 12, 2026 read of 42 Croma geysers, the cost per litre of stored water ran from Rs. 206 to Rs. 1,575 against a median of Rs. 625, and every one of the ten cheapest litres sat in a 25-litre tank. A 25-litre Croma geyser at Rs. 6,999 costs Rs. 1,350 less than a six-litre Crompton at Rs. 8,349. The practical guide is roughly this: three litres for a kitchen sink or a hand basin, six to ten litres for a single-person shower, fifteen litres for a family bathroom with a shower, and twenty-five litres if anyone in the house takes bucket baths or if two people bathe back to back. The only genuine reasons to buy small are wall space and the fact that a larger tank takes longer to heat from cold - not price.

Is a 5-star geyser worth the extra money?

It depends entirely on how often you heat water, and this shelf lets you price the question exactly. Two Racold fifteen-litre tanks appear in our read from the same maker at the same capacity: Rs. 8,699 at four stars and Rs. 10,399 at five - so the fifth BEE star costs Rs. 1,700. What the star rating measures is standing heat loss, the energy a full tank wastes staying hot between uses. In a household that heats water twice a day through a long winter, that difference typically pays back in three to five years and then keeps paying. In a holiday home, a guest bathroom or a house that uses the geyser three months a year, it never pays back. Buy the fifth star for the bathroom you use daily and the fourth for the one you do not.

Do I need an RO water purifier or is UV enough?

It depends on what comes out of your tap, and it is the single most expensive decision on this shelf - worth about Rs. 8,000. In our read the 16 non-RO purifiers had a median price of Rs. 10,545 and the 26 RO machines Rs. 18,925. UV purification kills bacteria and viruses but removes nothing dissolved, which makes it correct for treated municipal supply with low total dissolved solids and useless against the dissolved salts in borewell or tanker water. RO forces water through a membrane and removes those solids, at the cost of wasting several litres for every litre it produces. The test is your water's TDS, which a plumber or the purifier company will measure free: below roughly 300 ppm, UV is enough and RO is money wasted on stripping minerals you then pay a machine to add back; above that, RO is the only option that works.

What is the real running cost of a water purifier?

The filter changes, and no listing on this shelf states them. A purifier needs its pre-filters and carbon replaced roughly annually and its RO membrane every two to three years, and across most brands that runs somewhere between Rs. 2,000 and Rs. 6,000 a year depending on the model and your water quality - which over five years can exceed the purchase price of the cheaper machines on this page. Two things follow. First, ask the seller for the annual maintenance contract price before you buy, and compare that alongside the purchase price rather than after it. Second, prefer a machine with a proper sediment pre-filter, because sediment is what shortens membrane life and the membrane is the expensive consumable. One specification worth asking about that no listing here publishes is the recovery ratio - how many litres an RO machine wastes per litre it delivers.

Which pick on this page is the best buy?

For a family bathroom, the Croma 25-litre geyser at Rs. 6,999 is the cheapest water on the page at Rs. 280 a litre and is a five-star model - if the wall takes it, nothing else here is close on value. If you want a specialist brand and hard water is a concern, the Racold Omnis 25-litre at Rs. 11,799 has a titanium-coated element and comes from a company that makes nothing but water heaters. For a kitchen sink, the Rs. 2,999 Croma instant heater is the right product even though it is the dearest water here - just do not buy it as a household's only geyser. On purifiers, get your TDS tested first: if it is low, the Pureit UV at Rs. 7,490 is all you need, and if it is high, the Croma RO at Rs. 7,999 is Rs. 11,000 below the RO median, with the caveat that you should confirm the annual filter cost before ordering.

How Zoutons picks deals Zoutons may earn a commission when you buy through links on this page. Every price, stated MRP, discount percentage, rating and rating count here was read on August 12, 2026 from croma.com's own catalogue across two queries - water purifier and water heater geyser - with duplicates removed, and all of them can change without notice. That yielded 84 rows, of which we seated 20. The derived figures we quote - that the 42 geysers run from Rs. 206 to Rs. 1,575 per litre of stated capacity against a median of Rs. 625; that the 84 rows resolve to 75 distinct stated MRPs and 75 distinct selling prices; that the 16 non-RO purifiers carry a median price of Rs. 10,545 against Rs. 18,925 for the 26 RO machines; and that only 34 of the 84 rows carry any rating, the largest sample being 17 - are ours, calculated from those rows, using the capacity stated in each listing's own title. Because our pull fixed two search queries, these findings describe the listings we read rather than the whole of Croma's water range. A stated MRP is the seller's own figure and we have not verified that any product here was ever sold at it. We have not installed, filled, plumbed, wired or tested anything on this page, and all capacity, star rating, tank lining, element coating, filtration stage and technology claims are quoted from the listings as the seller's own wording, reported and not endorsed. Installation is chargeable separately on most of these products and is not included in any price here; confirm the installation and annual maintenance cost with the seller before ordering.
