63 Croma listings across fridges, washing machines and microwaves, read on August 6. Croma's own label is Rs. 7,900 cheaper on median, badges seven points deeper, and holds both the lowest score on the shelf and a third of the scores below four stars - none of them with a sample size attached.
Every large retailer that sells its own label is running the same experiment on its customers, and Croma's shelf lets you read the result. On August 6, 2026 we read 63 live listings across refrigerators, washing machines and microwave ovens - twenty carrying Croma's own brand, 43 carrying LG, Samsung, Whirlpool, Haier, IFB and others - and the two groups separate on three measures at once. The house label's median badge is 28 per cent against the national brands' 21. Its median price is Rs. 11,894 against Rs. 19,790, a gap of nearly Rs. 7,900. And on the star ratings Croma itself prints, six of the seventeen rated house-brand listings fall below 4.0 against three of twenty-five national ones, with the house range running 1.0 to 5.0 and the national brands never dropping below 3.0. The lowest score anywhere on the shelf - a flat 1.0 - belongs to a Croma-branded 7 kg washing machine at Rs. 15,990. Before any of that is read as a verdict, the limitation that shapes this whole page: Croma displays scores without rating counts, a practice we documented on this retailer in July, which means that 1.0 and every 5.0 beside it may each represent a single person. The price and badge figures are complete and checkable; the scores are not, and this page treats them accordingly. Where the two groups meet at matched capacity - a shelf whose badge behaviour we read differently earlier this month - the trade is Rs. 1,900 to Rs. 6,700 of price against a brand name and, on one fridge pairing, two BEE stars.
Every price below was pulled from Croma on August 6, 2026 and checked against the MRP on the listing. Stack them with the live codes on our Croma coupons page, which the deals desk re-verifies daily.
Six house-brand machines. They hold the shelf's lowest rating (a 1.0), its second-lowest (2.9) and its deepest laundry badge (43 per cent) - and they also undercut the national brands by Rs. 1,400 to Rs. 2,900 at matched capacities. Croma publishes no rating counts, so none of these scores has a sample size.
A 1.0 rating on a Rs. 15,990 washing machine - the weakest score we found.
Why it earned its spot The single lowest star rating anywhere in these 63 listings, and it belongs to the retailer's own label.
43 per cent off - the deepest washing-machine cut - at a 2.9 rating.
Why it earned its spot The house brand's deepest laundry badge and its second-lowest score, on the same tile.
Rs. 8,590 for 7 kg - about half what the fully-automatics cost - at 3.2.
Why it earned its spot The house brand's price advantage stated plainly, with its score attached.
Rs. 8,090 against Samsung's Rs. 9,990 for the same 6.5 kg capacity.
Why it earned its spot The cleanest like-for-like price comparison on the shelf: identical capacity, identical type, two brands.
Eight kilos for Rs. 9,490, at 4.2 - the strongest combination Croma's own range offers.
Why it earned its spot The most capacity, the best score and a 41 per cent badge, all on one house-brand tile.
4.3 at Rs. 12,790 - the highest-rated fully-automatic Croma sells here.
Why it earned its spot Included to show the house-brand range is not uniformly weak: its best automatic scores above two national ones.
The same category from Whirlpool, Samsung and IFB. They cost more and badge shallower - but two of the four display 3.0, which is why this page reports a tendency rather than a rule. The chapter closes on a 5.0 that is exactly as unsourced as Chapter One's 1.0.
Rs. 17,070 and a 3.0 - Rs. 1,080 more than the 1.0-rated Croma.
Why it earned its spot A national brand at the same capacity, costing more, badged shallower, and also scoring poorly.
Rs. 18,690 for an inverter machine that also displays 3.0.
Why it earned its spot The second national-brand 3.0 in the same category, at the highest price of the three.
Rs. 9,990 for the same 6.5 kg capacity Croma sells at Rs. 8,090.
Why it earned its spot The direct national-brand comparator for the house brand's best-argued listing.
The best-scored washing machine here - and no count published, same as the 1.0.
Why it earned its spot Seated to make the ratings caveat concrete: this 5.0 and the page's opening 1.0 are equally unsourced.
The house brand's fridges are the cheapest per litre on the shelf and the price gap to national brands is at its widest here. It is also where the counter-argument is strongest, because a 2-star fridge running for a decade spends back part of what it saved.
An 11 per cent badge on the house brand - the smallest sign it prints here.
Why it earned its spot Seated because it complicates the pattern: the house brand does not always discount deeply.
The same 84-litre fridge in black: Rs. 100 more, six badge points deeper.
Why it earned its spot Two colourways of one product, priced Rs. 100 apart, printing 11 and 17 per cent.
185 litres for Rs. 12,790 - the best capacity-per-rupee on this page.
Why it earned its spot The house brand's strongest value argument in refrigeration, at Rs. 69 per litre.
215 litres at Rs. 15,590 against Samsung's Rs. 22,290 for the same capacity.
Why it earned its spot The largest paid-price gap between house brand and national brand on this page.
The shelf's deepest badge (54 per cent) and its cheapest listing (Rs. 1,849) are both Croma-own ovens - and no national brand in our pull competes at these prices, which means no external check on them. The chapter ends on the shelf's shallowest badge of all, at 1 per cent.
Rs. 1,849 off a stated Rs. 4,000 - the biggest sign and the smallest price here.
Why it earned its spot The shelf's deepest badge, on the shelf's cheapest item, from the shelf's own-label brand.
Rs. 4,799 for a 19-litre OTG with a rotisserie, off a stated Rs. 8,000.
Why it earned its spot The size at which an OTG starts being an oven, at a price national brands do not match here.
63 litres for Rs. 12,399, off a stated Rs. 18,000.
Why it earned its spot The full-size oven option, at a third less than a built-in would cost.
Rs. 110 off Rs. 11,500 - the shallowest badge on the entire shelf.
Why it earned its spot The house brand's smallest sign, on its weakest-scoring kitchen appliance.
Four national-brand listings that answer the house brand directly: glass shelves for Rs. 2,200, four BEE stars for Rs. 6,700, convection and charcoal heating for Rs. 6,300 - and one plain, well-rated microwave whose sticker sits only Rs. 1,310 above its price.
Rs. 14,990 for 190 litres at 4.3 - Rs. 2,200 above the Croma 185.
Why it earned its spot The closest national-brand match to the house brand's best fridge, and what the premium buys.
Rs. 22,290 for 215 litres at 4 BEE stars - Rs. 6,700 above the Croma of the same size.
Why it earned its spot The energy-efficiency counter-argument to the house brand's price advantage.
Rs. 17,690 at 27 per cent - a national brand out-badging most of the house range.
Why it earned its spot Seated to keep the page honest: the badge pattern is a median tendency, not a law.
Rs. 7,590 against Rs. 8,900 - a Rs. 1,310 gap and an odd-numbered reference price.
Why it earned its spot The page's closing note on what an ordinary, believable appliance tile looks like.
First: treat house-brand scores and national-brand scores as the same kind of unsourced number, because on this shelf they are - Croma publishes counts for neither. Second: match on capacity before comparing prices. The Rs. 6,700 gap between the two 215-litre fridges is real; a gap between a 185-litre and a 215-litre would not have been. Third: on anything that runs continuously, price in the BEE rating. The Croma 215-litre saves Rs. 6,700 today and carries two fewer stars than the Samsung, which returns part of that over a decade of electricity. Fourth: be most careful in the categories where the house brand has no national competitor, as it does with oven toaster grills here - a segment with no rival listings is a segment with no external check on its pricing. The current card and bank offers, which stack on every price below, are on our Croma coupons page.

On August 6, 2026 we read 63 live listings from croma.com across three queries - refrigerator, washing machine and microwave oven - keeping every row that returned a price and a stated MRP. Twenty carry Croma's own label and 43 carry national brands: LG (12), Samsung (9), Whirlpool (6), Haier (5), IFB (3) and single listings from Bosch, Godrej, Bajaj, Sharp, Morphy Richards, Panasonic and Agaro. Every price, sticker, percentage and star rating on this page is Croma's own figure as displayed that afternoon. We have not installed, loaded, run or otherwise tested any appliance here, and every specification quoted - capacities, BEE star ratings, wash programmes, defrost types - is the listing's own claim.
The finding is a three-part gap between Croma's own label and the national brands sharing its shelf. On badge depth: the twenty Croma-own listings carry a median of 28 per cent against 21 per cent for the 43 national ones. On price: a median of Rs. 11,894 against Rs. 19,790. On displayed scores: six of the seventeen rated Croma-own listings sit below 4.0, against three of the twenty-five rated national ones, and the house brand's range runs from 1.0 to 5.0 while the national brands' runs from 3.0 to 5.0. The lowest score on the entire shelf, a 1.0, is Croma-branded. Every one of these is a median or a count across the full pull rather than a claim about any individual appliance, and Chapter Five exists because several national listings out-badge most of the house range.
This is the most important limitation on the page and it constrains everything above. Croma displays star ratings but not the number of people behind them, which means a 1.0 and a 5.0 on this shelf may each rest on a single voter, and there is no way to tell from the listing. We have therefore printed every score with that caveat attached in its own seat rather than in a footnote, seated the shelf's 1.0 and its 5.0 in adjacent chapters so the symmetry is visible, and refused to describe any product as good or bad on the strength of a score. What the counts do not undermine is the price and badge analysis, because those figures are complete: every listing states its price and its MRP.
Comparing a 6.5 kg machine to an 8 kg one proves nothing, so the price gaps quoted on this page are all matched on the specification that drives price. Washing machines: Croma's 6.5 kg semi-automatic at Rs. 8,090 against Samsung's 6.5 kg semi-automatic at Rs. 9,990, both 5 BEE star. Refrigerators: Croma's 215 litres at Rs. 15,590 against Samsung's 215 litres at Rs. 22,290 - and where the pair differs on BEE rating, as that one does at 2 stars against 4, we have said so in the seat and noted that running cost recovers part of the gap rather than presenting the difference as a clean saving. Where no like-for-like national comparator existed at all, as in oven toaster grills, we have said that too, because a segment with no competition is a segment with no external check on its pricing.
On price, the case is strong and measurable. Across the 63 listings we read on August 6, 2026, Croma's own label ran a median price of Rs. 11,894 against Rs. 19,790 for the national brands on the same shelf, and at matched capacities the gaps were concrete: Rs. 1,900 less than Samsung for a 6.5 kg semi-automatic washing machine, Rs. 6,700 less than Samsung for a 215-litre refrigerator. On reliability, this page cannot help you and neither can Croma's listings, because the retailer publishes star ratings without rating counts. What we can report is that six of the seventeen rated house-brand listings display scores below 4.0 against three of twenty-five national ones, and that the shelf's only 1.0 is Croma-branded. Our practical reading: the house brand is a reasonable buy where the mechanism is simple and the price gap large - the 8 kg semi-automatic at Rs. 9,490 and the 19-litre oven toaster grill at Rs. 4,799 are the two strongest cases on this page - and a harder call on complex, long-lived machines where service matters more than sticker price.
We do not know, and we are not going to speculate about intent. What we can describe is the effect, which is significant. A 4.5 from two thousand buyers and a 4.5 from two buyers are entirely different pieces of evidence, and Croma's listings render them identically. On the shelf we read, that produces genuinely uninterpretable situations: a Croma washing machine displays 1.0 and an IFB washing machine displays 5.0, and neither number tells you whether one person or one thousand is behind it. Several own-label listings display a flat 5.0, a suspiciously clean figure that large samples rarely produce and small ones produce routinely. The practical consequence for a shopper is that Croma's scores should be treated as a weak signal at best - useful for spotting something to ask about in store, not for settling a choice between two machines. Where you need crowd evidence, marketplaces that publish counts are the better source, and we have read several of those shelves this month.
Substantially, at matched capacity - but not all of the difference is a saving. The clearest pair on the shelf: Croma's 215-litre direct-cool single door at Rs. 15,590 and Samsung's RR23 215-litre at Rs. 22,290, a gap of Rs. 6,700. The catch is the BEE energy rating, which is 2 stars on the Croma and 4 on the Samsung. A refrigerator runs continuously for a decade or more, so a two-star gap compounds into a real electricity cost that recovers a meaningful share of that Rs. 6,700 over the appliance's life. Before choosing on price, look up the annual energy consumption figure printed on both BEE labels, multiply by your tariff and by ten years, and compare that number to the gap. On smaller fridges the arithmetic favours Croma more clearly: its 185-litre at Rs. 12,790 works out to roughly Rs. 69 per litre, the cheapest capacity-per-rupee figure we found on the shelf.
Of the twenty-two listings we seated, two stand out for different reasons. The Croma 8 kg semi-automatic washing machine at Rs. 9,490 offers the largest laundry capacity in the house-brand range at the highest displayed score in it (4.2), and costs less than every fully-automatic on the page including Croma's own - if you can live with moving clothes between two tubs, it is the strongest value argument here. The Croma 19-litre oven toaster grill with rotisserie at Rs. 4,799 is the other: enough oven to roast a small chicken, in a category where no national brand in our pull competes at the price. Both come with the same caveat as everything else on this shelf - the scores behind them have no published sample size. If you want a national brand's service network instead, the Samsung 6.5 kg semi-automatic at Rs. 9,990 is only Rs. 1,900 above the equivalent Croma and displays 4.0.
On this shelf they do on median, but not on every tile, and the exceptions are worth knowing. Croma's own label ran a median badge of 28 per cent against 21 per cent for the national brands across our 63 listings - a seven-point gap. But an LG 28-litre charcoal microwave carried a 27 per cent badge, deeper than fourteen of the twenty Croma-own listings, and a Haier 190-litre fridge at 30 per cent out-badged the comparable Croma at 20. Meanwhile the shallowest badge on the entire shelf, at 1 per cent, was on a Croma-own convection microwave. The structural reason a house brand can badge deeper is that the retailer writes both the selling price and the reference price against which the discount is computed, with no distributor in between, which gives it a freedom national brands do not have. That is a description of how the numbers are produced, not an accusation - and as this shelf shows, it produces a tendency rather than a rule.
