Most people read a returns policy as a question about the product. Amazon's own page says it is also a question about the shopper.

📅 Update log:
4 November 2026: first published. Read from Amazon India's own "Amazon.in Returns Policy" help page, logged out, from India. The account-history clause, the return processing fee, the 5-day non-returnable window and the condition checks are quoted as they stood on that date.

Most people read a returns policy as a question about the product: is this item returnable, and for how long. Amazon's own returns policy page says the answer also depends on the shopper. We read that page — "Amazon.in Returns Policy" — on 4 November 2026, logged out, from India.

Its load-bearing sentence: "Returns eligibility is based on your account history, including information already associated with your Amazon account such as account standing, shopping and returns activity over the past six to twelve months, and whether your account has any association with returns misuse or fraudulent activity." Six to twelve months is Amazon's own stated window.

And the second thing the page is explicit about: returns are not necessarily free. "Amazon does not allow requests for unlimited returns and/or free returns." Where a customer is found to be "excessively returning, or cancelling or not accepting the orders placed", Amazon "reserves the right to charge a Return processing fees and /or suspend and/or block and/or terminate such customer accounts, in that order".

The practical consequence, in one line: the return window printed on a product page is a property of the product, and your ability to use it is a property of your account. The page does not publish a threshold, a score or a number of returns that triggers any of this — so none is quoted here. It publishes the criteria and the escalation order, and that is what this page reports.

Your account history is part of the eligibility test

This is the clause most shoppers do not know exists, and it is stated without hedging. "Returns eligibility is based on your account history, including information already associated with your Amazon account such as account standing, shopping and returns activity over the past six to twelve months, and whether your account has any association with returns misuse or fraudulent activity."

Read the components separately, because they are four different things: account standing, shopping activity, returns activity, and any association with returns misuse or fraudulent activity. Shopping activity is in there alongside returns activity — the test is not purely a count of returns.

The page states no threshold, no number of returns and no ratio, and this page quotes none. It also does not say eligibility is withdrawn silently — the escalation it describes starts with a warning. Elsewhere on the same page: Amazon "reserves the right to warn and/or suspend and/or block and/or terminate such customer accounts, as necessary" where the return policy is misused "by excessively returning, or cancelling or not accepting the orders placed".

Two ordinary habits sit inside the wording and are worth knowing about: cancelling orders and not accepting deliveries are both named, alongside returning. If you routinely place orders you intend to decide on at the door, that is the same bucket in Amazon's own sentence — not a separate, safer one.

The return processing fee comes out of the refund

"The Return processing fee helps cover the handling and processing costs associated with returns. The Return processing fee will be deducted from the total amount paid by the customer for the returned order, before the refund is issued."

So it is not an invoice you receive — it is a smaller refund. The page adds that this is "subject to satisfaction of Amazon terms and conditions of use", that "Amazon reserves the right to modify, waive, or update the Return processing fee, at its discretion", and that "Amazon will not reimburse any withholding tax to customers on Return processing fees."

We quote no amount, because the page states none. There is no rupee figure, no percentage and no slab on it — only the mechanism, the deduction point and Amazon's discretion to change or waive it. Anyone quoting you a specific return processing fee is not getting it from this page.

What "original condition" actually requires

Three verification checks are named, and a return "will be processed only if" all three pass. The third is the one that catches people: the MRP tag has to still be on the item.

"the product is returned in original condition (with brand’s/manufacturer's box, MRP tag intact, user manual, warranty card and all the accessories therein)". A cut tag, a missing charger or a discarded outer carton are each inside that sentence.

And for anything that stores data, there is a separate instruction and a separate disclaimer: "If you wish to return an electronic device that stores any personal information, please ensure that you have removed all such personal information from the device prior to returning. Amazon shall not be liable in any manner for any misuse or usage of such information."

The checkAmazon's own wording
It was not damaged while you had it"it is determined that the product was not damaged while in your possession"
It is the same product that was shipped"the product is not different from what was shipped to you"
Original condition, with everything in the box"returned in original condition (with brand’s/manufacturer's box, MRP tag intact, user manual, warranty card and all the accessories therein)"
Your own data wiped, if it stores any"please ensure that you have removed all such personal information from the device prior to returning. Amazon shall not be liable in any manner"
Not simply a change of mind, on some items"including cases of buyer's remorse such as incorrect model or color of product ordered or incorrect product ordered"
The policy types, and why there is no single Amazon return window

People ask "what is Amazon's return window" as though there is one figure. The page sets out several policy types and tells customers to read the product's own page: "Customers should check the display page for Return / Replacement policy applicable to the specific product before purchase."

  • 7/10 Days Service Centre Replacement — for defects you go to the brand's service centre, and "final resolution (repair, refund, replacement) will be provided by brand only". Damaged or wrong items are a different route: free replacement within the window.
  • 7/10 Days Replacement by Brand — brand on-call support, then a technician inspection at your address; "on the basis of the technician's evaluation report, Amazon will provide resolution".
  • 7/10 Days Replacement — replacement for damaged, defective or wrong items, with a possible technician visit first.
  • 10/30 Days Returnable — the widest type named, covering free return or replacement within the stated window.
  • Non-returnable — no ordinary return, but a damaged, defective or wrong delivery still gets "a full refund or replacement", and the page sets a 5-day contact window for that.

For large electronics the page names a separate route entirely: report an issue with a "Smartphone, Tablet, Laptop, Television, Air Conditioner, Refrigerator, Washing Machine, Microwave" and "we may facilitate scheduling a technician visit to your location and services availability depends on the location pin code", with the resolution following the technician's report.

Policy typeIf the item is defectiveIf it arrived damaged or wrong
7/10 Days Service Centre ReplacementYou go to the brand's service centre for defects; Amazon may arrange a technician visit "for troubleshooting only"Free replacement within 7/10 days if damaged or wrong
7/10 Days Replacement by BrandBrand on-call support, then a technician inspection; resolution follows "the technician's evaluation report"Free replacement within 7/10 days if damaged or wrong

10/30 Days ReturnableFree return or replacement within the stated windowThe widest of the policy types on this page
Marked "non-returnable"Cannot be returned for an ordinary returnDamaged, defective or wrong only — contact Amazon within 5 days

Three clauses that close the door early

First, the Inspection Service OTP. "If Inspection Service is provided for the product(s) purchased by you and OTP is shared after verifying that product is not wrong, damaged or missing accessories, you will not be able to return the product claiming that the product is wrong, damaged, or missing accessories." Sharing that OTP is a verification step with consequences — check the item before you read the code out.

Second, replacement depends on stock. "Products may be eligible for replacement only if the same seller has the exact same item in stock"; if not, "a refund would be issued to you instead of a Replacement". If you specifically wanted the item rather than the money, that is worth knowing before you start.

Third, buyer's remorse is named. Products "may not be eligible for return in some cases ... including cases of buyer's remorse such as incorrect model or color of product ordered or incorrect product ordered". On items where that applies, ordering the wrong variant is not a returnable event.

What to do, in order

  • Read the return policy on the product page before you buy, not after. The page's own instruction: "Customers should check the display page for Return / Replacement policy applicable to the specific product before purchase."
  • Open the parcel carefully and keep everything — the brand box, the MRP tag, the manual, the warranty card and every accessory are all named in the condition test.
  • Check the item before you share an Inspection Service OTP. Once shared after verification, you cannot then return it as wrong, damaged or missing accessories.
  • If a non-returnable item arrives damaged or defective, contact Amazon within 5 days. That window is shorter than most return windows and it is the only route open on those items.
  • Wipe any device that stores your data before returning it. Amazon states it "shall not be liable in any manner" for misuse of information left on a returned device.
  • Expect a refund rather than a replacement if stock has run out — replacement requires the same seller to have the exact same item.
  • Treat cancellations and refused deliveries the way you treat returns. All three are named together in the clause that can lead to a warning, a processing fee, suspension, blocking or termination — "in that order".

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Amazon India look at your account history before allowing a return?
Yes, on its own published wording. Amazon's returns policy page states: "Returns eligibility is based on your account history, including information already associated with your Amazon account such as account standing, shopping and returns activity over the past six to twelve months, and whether your account has any association with returns misuse or fraudulent activity." Six to twelve months is Amazon's own stated window, and shopping activity sits alongside returns activity in the list. The page states no threshold, no ratio and no number of returns, so none is quoted here. Read 4 November 2026; policy pages change, so check the live page.
Can Amazon charge a fee for returning an item?
Yes — it reserves the right to. "Amazon does not allow requests for unlimited returns and/or free returns." Where customers are "found to be excessively returning, or cancelling or not accepting the orders placed", Amazon "reserves the right to charge a Return processing fees and /or suspend and/or block and/or terminate such customer accounts, in that order". The fee is taken out of your refund: it "will be deducted from the total amount paid by the customer for the returned order, before the refund is issued". No amount is quoted here because the page states none, and Amazon "reserves the right to modify, waive, or update" it at its discretion.
What is Amazon India's return window?
There is no single window — the page names several policy types and tells you to check the product. It lists 7/10 Days Service Centre Replacement, 7/10 Days Replacement by Brand, 7/10 Days Replacement, and 10/30 Days Returnable, plus items marked non-returnable. Its own instruction is "Customers should check the display page for Return / Replacement policy applicable to the specific product before purchase." For a non-returnable item that arrives damaged or defective, the page sets a separate 5-day contact window. For large electronics — smartphones, TVs, air conditioners, refrigerators, washing machines and more — Amazon "may facilitate scheduling a technician visit" and the resolution follows the technician's evaluation report.
Can you return a product marked non-returnable on Amazon?
Not as an ordinary return, but there is one route. "Products marked as ‘non-returnable’ on the product detail page cannot be returned. However, in an unlikely event of damaged, defective or wrong item delivered to you, we will provide a full refund or replacement, as applicable." The page attaches a clock to it: "If you've received a non-returnable product in a damaged/defective condition, you can contact us within 5 days from the delivery of the product." Amazon adds that it "may contact you to ascertain the damage or defect" and reserves the right to pick the product up to check before issuing a refund or replacement.
What condition does Amazon require a returned item to be in?
Original, with the MRP tag still attached and everything that came in the box. A return is processed only if the product "was not damaged while in your possession", "is not different from what was shipped to you", and "is returned in original condition (with brand’s/manufacturer's box, MRP tag intact, user manual, warranty card and all the accessories therein)". For anything that stores data, wipe it first — Amazon instructs customers to remove all personal information before returning and states it "shall not be liable in any manner for any misuse or usage of such information". Note also that replacement requires the same seller to have the exact same item in stock; otherwise you get a refund instead.

Every rule described, paraphrased or quoted on this page was read from Amazon India's own "Amazon.in Returns Policy" page at amazon.in/gp/help/customer/display.html on 4 November 2026, logged out, from India, with nothing bought. This page is a plain-English reading of a published policy page. It is not legal advice, it is not a complete account of Amazon's returns, refunds or replacement rules, and it must not be relied on in place of the live page or of Amazon customer service. No return processing fee amount is quoted here because Amazon's page states none — it publishes the mechanism and its own discretion to modify or waive the fee, not a figure. No single return window is presented as the rule, because the page sets out several policy types and directs customers to each product's own display page. Rules for items sold by third-party sellers, for Amazon Business orders, for Amazon Vine items and for international customers differ, and are noted only where the page names them. Policy pages change without notice. Nothing here alleges wrongdoing by Amazon — setting condition requirements and limiting returns abuse are ordinary retail practice.
