We read 39 Amazon colour pencil, crayon and sketch pen listings on 8 November 2026 and sorted them by whether the brand exists outside the marketplace. All 17 established-brand listings badge between 1% and 28%; every one of the 20 listings badged above 28% is a name that sells nowhere else. Then we divided each price by the piece count the seller prints, and the ranking turned over: the 86% badge is Rs. 12.00 a pen and the 5% badge is Rs. 3.39 a crayon. Nothing here was drawn with; the figures are Amazon's own.

Amazon runs bank offers, coupon clips and Prime-only prices that change by the day and by card, and this read was made logged out, so none of them is in any price above. Divide the price by the count in the title before anything else — it takes five seconds and on this shelf it reverses the ranking the badges suggest. Check what a kit's piece count actually counts: on a 150-piece set it includes the case, palette, brushes and sharpener, so it is not 150 colours. Read the rating count before the stars — two kits here 104 pieces apart display the identical 397 ratings, and two listings publish no rating at all. And treat the badge as a statement about the seller's own reference price: in this read every badge above 28% belongs to a brand you will not find in a stationery shop.

Each selling price, stated MRP, badge, star average and rating count was read from amazon.in's own results for "colour pencils set", "sketch pens set" and "crayons set for kids" on 8 November 2026, logged out, from India, with sponsored placements dropped and ASINs de-duplicated. 39 distinct listings were returned; 26 are seated.
Where a title states "24 Shades", "12 Colours", "46 Pcs" or "150 Pieces", that count is the seller's own and is divided into the selling price as given. Nothing was counted out of a box. Seven of the 39 listings state no count at all, and no per-piece figure is computed for those. On mixed kits the stated count includes accessories, so a 150-piece figure is pieces in a box, not 150 drawing instruments, and this page says so on every card where it matters.
A wax crayon, a gel crayon, a colour pencil, a watercolour sketch pen, an acrylic paint marker and a 0.05mm technical fineliner are different goods at genuinely different prices. No card here claims one is overpriced because another costs less per piece. Where two per-piece figures are set side by side, the card states what each product is, and the comparison being drawn is between a badge and a price, not between two products.
The 39 listings are split into India's established stationery houses — Doms, Apsara, Camlin, Camel, Faber-Castell, Cello, Fevicryl, Kores, Flair, Brustro and dabble — and names that appear only on the marketplace. 17 listings are in the first group and badge 1% to 28%; 22 are in the second and badge 3% to 86%. The rule runs one way: every listing above 28% is a marketplace name, but two marketplace names badge in single digits.
A stated MRP is the seller's own reference price and setting one above a selling price is ordinary retail practice. Nothing on this page alleges that any of these figures is false. What it reports is that a Rs. 1,000 claim sits above a Rs. 144 marker set while a Rs. 180 claim sits above a Rs. 179 pencil tin, and that per piece the second is the cheaper buy.
In this read, the Apsara 28-shade plastic crayon box at Rs. 95, against a stated Rs. 100 and badged 5%, on 4.1 stars from 351 ratings — the cheapest of all 39 listings returned on 8 November 2026 and also the cheapest per piece, at Rs. 3.39 a crayon. The cheapest colour pencil per piece is the Camlin Kokuyo 24-shade box at Rs. 115, or Rs. 4.79 a pencil. Prices were read logged out and Amazon changes them without notice.
Because the badge is calculated from the reference price the seller itself prints, and the two groups print very different ones. In this read all 17 established-brand listings badge between 1% and 28%, while 20 of the 22 marketplace-name listings badge between 37% and 86%. A Corslet marker set states Rs. 1,000 above a Rs. 144 price; a Doms pencil tin states Rs. 180 above a Rs. 179 price. Nothing here alleges any stated MRP is false — but the badge is describing the size of the claim, not the size of the saving, and per piece the 1% listing is frequently the cheaper one.
Per item, usually yes; per usable colour, often not. The Toy Imagine 150-piece kit works out at Rs. 2.39 a piece and the Cable World 150-pack at Rs. 1.99, both cheaper per item than any pencil box here. But the stated count on a mixed kit includes the palette, brushes, scissors, sharpener and case, so it is a count of things in a box rather than of drawing instruments. If what you need is 24 colour pencils, the Camlin box at Rs. 115 buys 24 colour pencils.
No, and this shelf has a clear counter-example. Camel's 27-shade brush pen pack is Rs. 398, or Rs. 14.74 a pen; its 14-shade pack is Rs. 194, or Rs. 13.86 a pen. The bigger box is 6% dearer per pen. In the other direction, Toy Imagine's 150-piece kit at Rs. 2.39 a piece is 2.72 times cheaper per item than its own 46-piece kit at Rs. 6.50. The only reliable method is to divide the price by the count printed in the title, which takes about five seconds and is the single most useful thing to do on this shelf.
Yes, and two do here. Toy Imagine's 46-piece kit at Rs. 299 and its 150-piece kit at Rs. 359 both display 3.8 stars from exactly 397 ratings — Rs. 60 and 104 pieces apart, with one pool of reviews between them. Where that happens, the star average tells you nothing about which of the two tiles is the better buy. Check whether the count beside the stars appears on more than one listing before you use it to decide.
