An Amazon India seller packing a product into a shipping carton at a desk surrounded by boxes, tape and a barcode scanner — the outbound shipment that the weight handling fee is charged on

Amazon India publishes its seller shipping rates as images rather than text, which is why they are rarely quoted. Read directly, they show that the fee for an identical parcel changes with the seller's own STEP level — Rs. 37, Rs. 39 or Rs. 42 for the first 500 g of a regional shipment.

📅 Update log:
5 November 2026: first published. Read from Amazon India's own fees-and-pricing page at sell.amazon.in, logged out, from India. The four weight-handling grids are published as images and were downloaded from Amazon's CDN and read directly; each carries the header "Effective March 16, 2026". Every rate, threshold and worked example is Amazon's own published figure, quoted excluding GST as Amazon publishes it. Slab arithmetic beyond Amazon's own examples is ours and is labelled in the text. We also note one worked example on the page that no longer matches the current Easy Ship table.

Amazon India publishes its seller shipping rates — it calls them weight handling fees — at sell.amazon.in/fees-and-pricing. We read the page on 5 November 2026.

The rate grids on that page are published as images rather than as text, which is why a plain read of the page returns the worked examples and the storage and removal rates but no slab table at all. We downloaded the four grids from Amazon's own CDN and read them directly. All four carry the header "Effective March 16, 2026".

The first thing in them that is not widely known: the fee depends on the seller, not only on the parcel. Every grid is split three ways by STEP level — Premium and Advanced, Standard, and Basic — and a Basic seller pays more to ship the identical box to the identical address.

These are seller fees, not shopper fees. Nothing on this page is added to your bill at checkout. Every rate here is quoted excluding GST, exactly as Amazon publishes it — Amazon's own note says 18% GST applies on top of all of them.

What your STEP level costs you

The gap is small per parcel and it is charged on every parcel. Note the last row: the incremental per-kilogram bands are identical across all three STEP levels on every grid, so the penalty is a flat rupee amount on the base band rather than a percentage of the shipment. A heavy parcel narrows the gap; a light one widens it.

On a Heavy & Bulky national shipment the STEP penalty is Rs. 6 on a Rs. 298 base — two per cent. On a 500 g regional FC parcel it is Rs. 5 on Rs. 37, which is 13.5%. The flat-rupee design means the level matters most to sellers shipping small, light, cheap things in volume, which is precisely the seller least able to absorb it.

The fulfilment centre grid, standard size

Fulfilment centre shipping is the only channel of the four that charges by distance. There is no Local column on the standard-size grid — only Regional and National. Amazon's own definitions: regional means the shipment moves within one of its four regions without staying in the same city; national means it crosses regions.

Size band — standardRegional: Prem/AdvRegional: StandardRegional: BasicNational: Prem/AdvNational: StandardNational: Basic
First 500 gRs. 37Rs. 39Rs. 42Rs. 63Rs. 65Rs. 69

Each additional kg after 5 kgRs. 13Rs. 13Rs. 13Rs. 18Rs. 18Rs. 18

The first three rows are totals for a shipment in that weight band, not increments. Amazon's own worked example confirms it: a 700 g book shipped Delhi to Chandigarh through FC is quoted on the page at Rs. 54, which is exactly the Standard-STEP regional figure for the 500 g–1 kg band. Above 2 kg the per-kilogram rows are additive.

National is roughly 1.67 times regional at the light end — Rs. 65 against Rs. 39 at Standard STEP — and the gap stays wide all the way up the card.

Easy Ship and IXD are flat. That is the whole trick.

Neither Easy Ship nor Inbound Cross Dock has a distance column at all. One fee, any address in India. Which means the choice between channels is really a bet on where your buyers are.

The same parcel, four channels

All figures below are the Standard STEP level, excluding GST, for a standard-size item.

Channel500 g parcel2 kg parcelWhat the shape means
FC, buyer in the same regionRs. 39Rs. 78Cheapest at both weights
IXD (Inbound Cross Dock), flatRs. 43Rs. 94Flat — distance makes no difference
Easy Ship, flatRs. 55Rs. 112Flat — distance makes no difference
FC, buyer in another regionRs. 65Rs. 122Dearest at both weights
Self ShipNo Amazon feeNo Amazon feeYou pay your own courier instead

FC is simultaneously the cheapest and the dearest option on this card, depending entirely on the buyer's address. At 500 g it is Rs. 39 regionally and Rs. 65 nationally. Easy Ship at a flat Rs. 55 loses to regional FC by Rs. 16 and beats national FC by Rs. 10 — so a seller whose orders are mostly local is paying a premium for flat pricing, and one shipping all over the country is buying insurance with it.

IXD undercuts Easy Ship at every band on this grid — Rs. 43 against Rs. 55 at 500 g, Rs. 94 against Rs. 112 at 2 kg — while being equally flat.

Work out your own regional-versus-national split before choosing a channel. On this card the break-even between flat and zoned pricing is decided by that one number and nothing else. Amazon publishes a fee calculator on the same page, and its own note reads: "Estimates are indicative. Actual fees may vary by category and fulfilment."

The volumetric rule, which catches light bulky things

Amazon states it plainly: "Amazon Shipping Fees is computed on volumetric or actual weight, whichever is higher. Volumetric Weight (kg) = (Length x Breadth x Height)/5000 where LBH are in cm." The minimum chargeable weight for a standard item is 500 g, and above that it is charged in multiples of 500 g.

A 40 x 30 x 20 cm carton has a volumetric weight of 4.8 kg no matter what is inside it. If it actually holds 1 kg of cushions, the FC regional fee at Standard STEP is not the Rs. 54 the scale suggests — it is the 1–2 kg band at Rs. 78 plus three additional-kilogram slabs at Rs. 24, which is Rs. 150. That is our arithmetic on Amazon's published rates, not a figure Amazon prints, and it uses Amazon's own convention of rounding a part-kilogram up to a full slab, taken from its 3.5 kg Easy Ship example.

Nearly three times the fee, for the same kilogram of product, because of the box. On this rate card packaging size is a pricing decision.

Heavy and Bulky, where the first 12 kg is the whole story

An item is Heavy & Bulky if it meets any one of Amazon's criteria: it is from categories such as washing machines, refrigerators, air conditioners, microwaves, chimneys, dishwashers, televisions, treadmills, cycles with wheels over 20 inches, large furniture or deep freezers; or the package weighs more than 22.5 kg; or its longest side exceeds 72 inches (183 cm); or its girth exceeds 118 inches (300 cm), where girth is length plus twice the sum of width and height; or it ships in multiple boxes; or it needs carpenter installation.

Heavy & Bulky band (excl. GST)LocalRegionalNational
First 12 kg — Premium and AdvancedRs. 108Rs. 158Rs. 298
First 12 kg — StandardRs. 110Rs. 160Rs. 300
First 12 kg — BasicRs. 114Rs. 164Rs. 304
Each additional kg, 12 kg to 25 kg (all levels)Rs. 6Rs. 10Rs. 18
Each additional kg above 25 kg (all levels)Rs. 5Rs. 6Rs. 12

This grid does have a Local column, and the spread across it is enormous: Rs. 110 local against Rs. 300 national at Standard STEP — 2.73 times for the same first 12 kg.

And the per-kilogram rate falls as the item gets heavier, which is the opposite of the standard-size grid. Between 12 kg and 25 kg a national shipment adds Rs. 18 a kilogram; above 25 kg it adds Rs. 12. A 30 kg national Heavy & Bulky shipment therefore runs Rs. 300 plus thirteen kilograms at Rs. 18 plus five at Rs. 12 — Rs. 594 before GST, by our arithmetic on Amazon's rates.

The fees that are not shipping at all

Fee (FC unless stated)Published rate, excluding GST
Pick & Pack, standard item up to 1 kg (FC only)Rs. 17 per unit sold
Pick & Pack, each additional kg up to 5 kgRs. 5
Pick & Pack, each additional 5 kg thereafterRs. 2
Pick & Pack, Heavy & BulkyRs. 26 per unit sold
Storage (FC only)Rs. 50 per cubic foot per month
FC removal, standard sizeRs. 10 standard shipping / Rs. 30 expedited
FC removal, Heavy & BulkyRs. 100 standard / Rs. 100 expedited
GST on every fee above18%, applied on top

Storage at Rs. 50 per cubic foot per month is the line that quietly punishes slow stock. A single cubic foot sitting unsold for six months costs Rs. 300 before GST — and the 40 x 30 x 20 cm carton from the volumetric example above is about 0.85 cubic feet.

Removal is the one place expedited costs triple: Rs. 30 against Rs. 10 per standard unit. For Heavy & Bulky it is Rs. 100 either way, so there is no reason to choose standard removal on a large item at all.

The one worked example on Amazon's page that no longer matches its own table

Amazon's page prints three shipping examples in its body text. Two of them reconcile exactly with the Standard STEP grids.

"if an item (containing a book) weighing 700 gms is shipped from Delhi to Chandigarh ... through FC then Shipping or Weight handling Fees = Rs. 54" — the FC regional 500 g–1 kg cell at Standard STEP is Rs. 54. Matches.

"If an item weighing 3.5 kg (containing an electronic item) is shipped by Easy Ship, then Flat Shipping fees = Rs. 112 + (Rs. 34 + Rs. 34) = Rs. 180" — the Easy Ship 1–2 kg cell at Standard STEP is Rs. 112 and the additional-kilogram row is Rs. 34. Matches, and it also tells us how Amazon rounds a part-kilogram: 1.5 kg above the band becomes two full slabs.

The third does not match. The page says: "the Amazon Easy Ship Weight-Handling Fees for 800 gms package being shipped to a regional location will amount to INR 68 i.e. INR 51 (charge for first 500 gms) + INR 17 (charge for next 500 gms)".

Three things in that sentence sit oddly against the current grid. Easy Ship has no regional tier at all — it is a flat fee. Neither Rs. 51 nor Rs. 17 appears anywhere in the Easy Ship table. And the table prices an 800 g Easy Ship parcel in its 500 g–1 kg band at Rs. 73, Rs. 75 or Rs. 79 depending on STEP level — not Rs. 68.

The most likely explanation is simply that the example predates the 16 March 2026 rate table and was not updated with it, and we make no claim beyond that. We flag it because a seller budgeting from the worked example rather than the grid would be under-estimating this fee. Use the table, or Amazon's own calculator on the same page.

Where the four regions actually are

Amazon's own list, reproduced as published. Region 1: Chandigarh, Delhi, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh Zone A and Uttarakhand. Region 2: Dadra and Nagar, Diu and Daman, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra. Region 3: Andaman and Nicobar, Andhra Pradesh, Goa, Karnataka, Kerala, Pondicherry, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Lakshadweep. Region 4: Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Odisha, Sikkim, Tripura, Uttar Pradesh Zone B and West Bengal.

Uttar Pradesh is the only state split across two regions. Amazon defines Zone B as the Ayodhya, Azamgarh, Basti, Devipatan, Gorakhpur, Mirzapur, Prayagraj and Varanasi divisions, which sit in Region 4; the rest of the state is Zone A, in Region 1. So a parcel from Delhi to Prayagraj is a national shipment while one from Delhi to Lucknow is regional — Rs. 65 against Rs. 39 on a 500 g standard parcel at Standard STEP.

The three things worth taking away

Your STEP level is a shipping rate. Basic sellers pay Rs. 5 to Rs. 6 more per parcel on the base band of every grid — 13.5% on a small regional FC shipment. The incremental per-kilogram rows are identical across levels, so the penalty hits light parcels hardest.

Flat versus zoned is the real choice. Easy Ship and IXD charge one fee to any address; FC charges Rs. 39 regionally and Rs. 65 nationally at 500 g. Where your buyers live decides which is cheaper, and nothing else does.

The box is billed, not the contents. Volumetric weight is (L x B x H)/5000 and Amazon charges on whichever is higher. A 40 x 30 x 20 cm carton bills as 4.8 kg however light it is — and then sits in storage at Rs. 50 per cubic foot per month.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Amazon's weight handling fee in India in 2026?
It is Amazon's shipping charge to the seller, and on the rate card effective 16 March 2026 it starts at Rs. 37 for a 500 g regional fulfilment centre shipment and Rs. 63 for the same parcel sent nationally. Read from sell.amazon.in/fees-and-pricing on 5 November 2026. The rate depends on three things: the fulfilment channel, the shipping weight, and the seller's own STEP level. At the Standard STEP level a 500 g parcel costs Rs. 39 by FC regionally, Rs. 43 by IXD, Rs. 55 by Easy Ship and Rs. 65 by FC nationally. All figures exclude GST, which Amazon applies at 18% on top. These are fees charged to sellers, not added to a shopper's bill.
Why do two Amazon sellers pay different shipping fees for the same parcel?
Because every weight handling grid on Amazon's card is split three ways by STEP level - Premium and Advanced, Standard, and Basic. On the first 500 g of a regional FC shipment that is Rs. 37, Rs. 39 and Rs. 42; on Easy Ship it is Rs. 53, Rs. 55 and Rs. 59; on IXD Rs. 42, Rs. 43 and Rs. 47. The important detail is that the 'each additional kg' rows are identical across all three levels on every grid - Rs. 24 and Rs. 13 on FC, Rs. 34 and Rs. 18 on Easy Ship. So the penalty is a flat rupee amount on the base band, not a percentage of the shipment, which means it bites hardest on small light parcels: 13.5% on a 500 g regional FC shipment, but only 2.0% on a Heavy & Bulky national one.
Is Easy Ship or Fulfilment by Amazon cheaper for shipping?
It depends entirely on where your buyers are, because Easy Ship is flat and FC is zoned. At Standard STEP for a 500 g standard-size parcel: FC regional Rs. 39, IXD Rs. 43, Easy Ship Rs. 55, FC national Rs. 65. So Easy Ship loses to regional FC by Rs. 16 and beats national FC by Rs. 10 on the identical parcel. At 2 kg the same pattern holds: Rs. 78 regional FC, Rs. 94 IXD, Rs. 112 Easy Ship, Rs. 122 national FC. IXD undercuts Easy Ship at every band on this card while being equally flat. Self Ship carries no Amazon shipping fee at all, because you pay a courier directly instead. All figures exclude GST and these are seller fees, not shopper charges.
How does Amazon calculate volumetric weight for shipping fees?
Amazon's published formula is Volumetric Weight (kg) = (Length x Breadth x Height) / 5000, with the dimensions in centimetres - and the fee is charged on volumetric or actual weight, whichever is higher. The minimum chargeable weight for a standard item is 500 g, and beyond that it is charged in multiples of 500 g. A 40 x 30 x 20 cm carton therefore bills as 4.8 kg however light its contents are. On the FC regional grid at Standard STEP that works out at the 1-2 kg band of Rs. 78 plus three additional-kilogram slabs of Rs. 24 - Rs. 150, against the Rs. 54 a genuinely 1 kg parcel would pay. That calculation is ours on Amazon's rates, not a figure Amazon prints, and it follows Amazon's own rounding convention from its 3.5 kg worked example. Packaging size is a real cost on this card.
Does Amazon's fees page match its own rate table?
Mostly, but one worked example on it does not. Two of the three shipping examples in the page text reconcile exactly with the Standard STEP grids: the 700 g Delhi-to-Chandigarh FC shipment at Rs. 54 is the FC regional 500 g-1 kg cell, and the 3.5 kg Easy Ship parcel at Rs. 112 + Rs. 34 + Rs. 34 = Rs. 180 is the Easy Ship 1-2 kg cell plus two additional-kilogram slabs. The third says an 800 g Easy Ship parcel 'to a regional location' costs Rs. 68, made of Rs. 51 for the first 500 g plus Rs. 17 for the next. But Easy Ship has no regional tier on the current grid - it is a flat fee - and neither Rs. 51 nor Rs. 17 appears anywhere in that table, which prices an 800 g Easy Ship parcel at Rs. 73, Rs. 75 or Rs. 79 by STEP level. The likely explanation is simply an example that predates the 16 March 2026 table, and we claim nothing more than that - but a seller budgeting from the example rather than the grid would under-estimate the fee. Use the table or Amazon's own calculator.
Prices & codes last verified: November 5, 2026
Every rate, threshold and worked example on this page was read from Amazon India's own seller fees and pricing page at sell.amazon.in/fees-and-pricing on 5 November 2026, logged out, from India. The weight handling grids on that page are published as images rather than HTML text; they were downloaded from Amazon's own CDN and read directly, and each carries the header "Effective March 16, 2026". These are fees Amazon charges sellers. They are not added to a shopper's bill at checkout. All rates are quoted excluding GST, exactly as Amazon publishes them — Amazon's own note states that 18% GST applies on top of every fee shown. Weight handling is one line of several: referral fee, closing fee and other programme fees also apply, and the page notes that closing fees were updated effective 7 September 2026, rising by Rs. 1 on products up to Rs. 500 and Rs. 3 above it across the FC, Easy Ship and Seller Flex channels. Any figure on this page not taken directly from a cell of Amazon's grids or from one of Amazon's own worked examples is our arithmetic applying those published rates, is labelled as such in the text, and is illustrative rather than quoted — including the part-kilogram rounding convention, which we take from Amazon's own 3.5 kg Easy Ship example. Where we note that one worked example on the page does not match the current Easy Ship table, that is an observation about the published page and nothing more; we do not allege that any rate is incorrect or that Amazon has done anything improper. Amazon's own caveat applies: "Estimates are indicative. Actual fees may vary by category and fulfilment." This is not business, tax or legal advice and is not a complete account of Amazon's seller terms. Use Amazon's own fee calculator for any specific product. Rates change without notice.
