One percentage point apart on the badge, Rs. 225 apart on the price
We read both electric-kettle shelves on the morning of 10 September 2026: 29 listings from amazon.in's own search results and 28 from Croma's own listing pages, 57 in all. The headline numbers are unusually clean. Amazon's median badge is 44% off and Croma's is 43% — one point apart — while Amazon's median kettle costs Rs. 1,199 and Croma's Rs. 1,424.
That is the whole case against reading discount percentages across retailers in a single line. Two shelves advertising themselves as equally generous, and a Rs. 225 gap at the middle of each.
Part of the gap is stocking rather than pricing. Croma lists five kettles above Rs. 2,500, up to Rs. 6,054; Amazon listed none above Rs. 2,392. Amazon in turn carries a foldable travel-kettle segment from Rs. 411 that Croma does not stock at all. So the fair test is not shelf against shelf. It is the same kettle against itself — and two models appeared on both.

Two kettles on both shelves, and the badge gets it backwards both times
The Havells Aqua Plus, 1.2 litres and 1250 watts, is Rs. 1,729 on Amazon and Rs. 1,799 at Croma. The two retailers do not agree on its list price: Amazon states Rs. 2,995 and prints a 42% badge, Croma states Rs. 3,460 and prints 48%. The shelf advertising the deeper discount is the dearer one, by Rs. 70.
The AGARO Esteem multi-cook, 1.2 litres and 600 watts, runs the other way and is more striking. Amazon sells it at Rs. 1,179 and badges 34% off a stated Rs. 1,799. Croma sells it at Rs. 1,399 and badges 7% off a stated Rs. 1,499. Croma is Rs. 220 dearer and advertises almost no discount at all; Amazon is cheaper and advertises a third off.
Put those two rows side by side and the badge is shown to carry no directional information whatsoever. On one model the bigger badge marks the dearer shelf, on the other it marks the cheaper one. What differs between the retailers is the number each has typed into the list-price field, and neither of those numbers is something we can verify. We make no claim about why they differ.

₹ Watts and litres are the specification that moves the price, and both shelves label them clearly. Ordinary 1.5-litre boil-only kettles run 1300 to 1500 watts and sit at Rs. 499 to Rs. 999 on both. The multi-cook models — 600 to 650 watts, designed to simmer rather than boil fast — start around Rs. 1,179 on Amazon and Rs. 1,249 at Croma. A low wattage on a kettle is not a fault: it is what a multi-cook pot needs.
The cheap end of each shelf
Croma's floor is its own house brand: a Croma 1500-watt 1.2-litre kettle at Rs. 594, followed by a 1.5-litre Croma at Rs. 649 and a JUDGE by Prestige at Rs. 650. Under Rs. 900 Croma also carries Russell Hobbs, USHA and BAJAJ — four established appliance names inside three hundred rupees.
Amazon's floor is Rs. 411, and it is a different product: a foldable silicone travel kettle. Ignore the travel segment and Amazon's cheapest full-size kettle is the Pigeon Amaze Plus 1.5-litre at Rs. 499, which is also the most-rated listing on either shelf by an enormous margin.
So at the bottom of the market Amazon is roughly Rs. 100 cheaper for a full-size steel kettle, and it is the only one of the two selling a kettle you can pack.

Croma sells a kettle Amazon does not
Above Rs. 2,500 the comparison stops being a comparison. Croma listed five kettles there and Amazon listed none, and the five are not filler: Russell Hobbs at Rs. 4,945 and Rs. 5,969, a HADEN Boston at Rs. 3,074, a Philips at Rs. 2,799 and a nedis 2200-watt 1.7-litre at Rs. 6,054, which is ten times Croma's own floor price.
Note what happens to the badges up there: 29%, 25%, 25%, 28%, 11%. Croma's deepest discounts are all at the cheap end of its shelf and its shallowest at the expensive end — the opposite of what the overall 43% median suggests. Not one of these five listings carries a star rating.

The real difference is evidence, not price
All 29 Amazon kettle listings carry a star rating, and the median count is 2,005. The Pigeon Amaze Plus at Rs. 499 has 178,931 ratings. The Prestige PKOSS has 80,333. Two Havells listings carry 46,513. Whatever you think of a 3.9-star average, eighty thousand people is a sample you can reason about.
Eighteen of Croma's 28 listings carry a rating, and the median count is three. The largest number of ratings on any single Croma kettle listing in this read is 22. A 5.0 average built on one rating, which appears twice on that shelf, tells you nothing at all, and ten listings tell you nothing because they carry no rating whatsoever.
The same Havells Aqua Plus makes the point exactly: 46,513 ratings at 4.4 on Amazon, six ratings at 4.8 at Croma. Both averages are the retailer's own published figure and we reproduce them without auditing either. It is the same kettle. Only one of those two numbers is worth reading, and it is not the higher one.
