Sixteen of the 29 results we priced on 9 September 2026 are novelty pencil boxes — unicorn cases, metal school-bus tins, password locks, magnetic lids with calculators — running a 76.5% median discount against stated MRPs of Rs. 399 to Rs. 1,999.
The thirteen real instrument sets on the same shelf, from Classmate, Camlin, Maped, Faber-Castell, Reynolds, Doms and Nataraj, discount by a 10% median against stated MRPs of Rs. 100 to Rs. 500, and cost roughly the same money. Half the ‘geometry boxes’ on this shelf contain no compass
Search geometry box on Amazon India and 29 listings come back priced below a stated MRP. 16 of them are novelty pencil boxes — unicorn-themed cases, metal school-bus tins, plastic boxes with password locks, magnetic lids and built-in calculators. Useful objects for a nine-year-old; not mathematical drawing instruments.
The two groups price completely differently. The novelty boxes run a 76% median discount against stated MRPs of Rs. 399 to Rs. 1,999, with individual badges of 81%, 83%, 86% and 90%. The 13 actual instrument sets — Classmate, Camlin, Maped, Faber-Castell, Reynolds, Doms, Nataraj — run a 10% median against stated MRPs of Rs. 100 to Rs. 500.
The median prices are closer than the badges suggest: Rs. 272 for a novelty box against Rs. 166 for an instrument set. In other words the two kinds of product cost roughly the same money, and only one of them is claiming to be a bargain. If the child needs a compass, a divider and a protractor for a maths class, read the first table below and ignore the second.

🔍 How to tell them apart in a search result. The real sets name their contents in the title — compass, divider, protractor, set squares, mechanical pencil, and a piece count such as "9pcs" or "12-piece". The novelty boxes name a theme instead: space, unicorn, bear, school bus, password lock, calculator. School bags are where the money goes: a Rs. 749 median
The bag aisle is the expensive one and the most heavily discounted: 29 listings from Rs. 199 to Rs. 1,590, a Rs. 749 median and a 65% median badge. Safari alone accounts for five listings, and its Omega 5-compartment laptop backpack at Rs. 709 is the most-rated bag in the read with 16,867 ratings at 4.2.
The stated MRPs here are large — Rs. 3,396 on that Rs. 709 Safari, Rs. 3,099 and Rs. 2,999 on two more — and luggage is the one category in Indian retail where those numbers have always been theatrical, from long before anyone shopped online. The useful comparison is between the bags rather than against the MRPs: Rs. 699 to Rs. 899 buys a 30 to 37-litre branded laptop backpack with several thousand ratings behind it, and Rs. 1,503 buys a Tommy Hilfiger one with 3,364.
One listing in the bag results is not a bag at all: a Rs. 199 F Gear rain and dust cover, which fits over a bag you already own. It has 2,664 ratings at 4.2 and it is a perfectly good object, but it will appear first if you sort this aisle by price.

Notebooks and pens are the honest aisles
After the geometry-box theatre, the paper aisle is a relief. Ten notebook listings run a 21% median discount and five pen listings run 10%. Luxor's 5-subject A5 notebook is Rs. 168 against a stated Rs. 210, with 10,897 ratings at 4.4 — the best-evidenced product anywhere in this read. Classmate's 6-subject spiral is Rs. 269 against Rs. 290, a 7% badge.
The pen aisle is effectively one brand. Four of the five listings are Parker, running 5% to 14% off list prices between Rs. 297 and Rs. 1,700, all with four-figure rating counts. That is what a category looks like when the manufacturer controls its own list price and the retailer has no room to invent one.
The exception proves the rule: the single deepest notebook badge, 74% off a stated Rs. 1,379 for a Rs. 359 Amazon Basics graph notebook, belongs to Amazon's own label — the house brand behaving like a marketplace seller while Luxor and Classmate beside it discount by single digits.

Across all 73 listings priced below a stated MRP in this read, buyers have left 125,539 ratings, and they are spread far more evenly than on most shelves we price — school stationery is bought by everybody, repeatedly, and the crowd sizes reflect it.
The practical budget, if you are buying a full set for one child: roughly Rs. 160 for a multi-subject notebook, Rs. 160 to Rs. 200 for a branded instrument box, Rs. 100 to Rs. 300 for pens, and Rs. 700 to Rs. 900 for a branded backpack that survives a year.
