We read 40 SPF 50 sunscreens across the two shelves on 26 August 2026 to see how often that happens. On 19 of Amazon's 27 listings the stated MRP is exactly twice the selling price, which produces a 50 per cent badge automatically. Nykaa's median discount is 12 per cent. On rupees, neither shop wins outright.

26 Aug 2026 — first published. Thirteen SPF 50 sunscreens pulled from Nykaa's own listing API and twenty-seven from Amazon India search results the same day. Nineteen of the twenty-seven Amazon listings carried a stated MRP exactly twice the selling price; Nykaa's median badge was 12 per cent with a maximum of 20. Five products or brands appeared on both shelves and are compared row by row, with variant and pack-size caveats stated. Deconstruct's gel sunscreen was Rs. 379 on both sites with badges of 5 and 50 per cent. Neither shelf publishes pack sizes consistently, so no price-per-gram is computed. We re-check this comparison monthly and log every price that moves.
The same sunscreen, the same price, two completely different badges
We read both shelves on 26 August 2026 - 13 SPF 50 sunscreens from Nykaa's own listings, 27 from Amazon India's search results. The cleanest comparison on either site is Deconstruct's gel sunscreen. It costs Rs. 379 at both. Nykaa strikes it from Rs. 399 and prints 5 per cent off. Amazon strikes it from Rs. 758 and prints 50 per cent off.
Nothing about the product changed between the two pages. What changed is the number each retailer chose to cross out. That is the whole story of this comparison, and it repeats down the shelf.

₹ A caveat we cannot remove: neither shelf publishes pack sizes consistently. Where Amazon's title states a size and Nykaa's does not - or the variants differ, as with Dot & Key - the price gap may partly be a size gap. The Deconstruct row is the exception: same product, same rupee price, different badge.
Nineteen of Amazon's 27 sunscreens are struck from exactly double the price
This is not a figure of speech. On 19 of the 27 Amazon sunscreen listings we pulled, the stated MRP is precisely twice the selling price - Rs. 379 against Rs. 758, Rs. 399 against Rs. 798, Rs. 1,009 against Rs. 2,018, Rs. 1,200 against Rs. 2,400. A price doubled and then halved produces a 50 per cent badge every time, on every product, regardless of what anything is worth.
Twelve of those nineteen are shown below. The pattern crosses brands, price points and sellers, which is what makes it a pricing convention rather than a coincidence.

Nykaa's shelf works differently. Its median discount across all 13 sunscreens is 12 per cent, its largest is 20 per cent, and three listings are cut by 5 per cent. Those are the numbers of a retailer selling at close to brand-set prices - and the reason a badge on Nykaa carries a little information while a 50 per cent badge on Amazon carries almost none.

Where each shop is genuinely cheaper
Strip the badges out and the rupee answer is mixed. Amazon is materially cheaper on the two premium D2C sunscreens in this read - The Derma Co's 1% Hyaluronic aqua gel at Rs. 235 against Rs. 615, and Re'equil's Ultra Matte at Rs. 327 against Rs. 613 - though on both, pack size is unstated on at least one of the two listings, so treat those gaps as indicative rather than settled.
Nykaa is marginally cheaper where the products match closely: Rs. 9 on Foxtale, Rs. 9 on the Dot & Key gels, level on Deconstruct. Nykaa also carries brands Amazon's sunscreen results did not return at all in our pull - Plum, Hyphen, Kay Beauty, 52 Sundaze - while Amazon carries Lakme, Garnier, Himalaya, Cetaphil, Fixderma and Ipca, which Nykaa's sunscreen listings did not surface.
The evidence is deeper on Nykaa. Its Neutrogena listing carries 327,961 ratings and its Dot & Key sunscreen 168,155; the largest count anywhere on the Amazon sunscreen shelf is 41,351. Scores are useless on both - every product on both shelves sits between 3.9 and 4.7.
How we compared, and what we could not verify
- Nykaa's 13 listings came from its own listing API on two sunscreen queries; Amazon's 27 from search results on two queries, read the same day by plain scrapling.
- Every price, MRP, badge, rating and rating count is the retailer's own figure. We did not add a coupon, a bank offer or a delivery charge to either.
- Pack size is the unresolvable variable: Amazon states a size in some titles (50 ml, 50 g, 60 ml) and Nykaa states one in none of the 13. Same-brand rows therefore compare listings, not standardised units, and no price-per-gram appears anywhere on this page.
- Where the variants differ within a brand - Dot & Key Vitamin C+E at Nykaa against Mango Detan at Amazon, The Derma Co's aqua gel against its matte gel - the row says so.
- SPF and PA claims are quoted from the listings as printed. We have not tested any sunscreen on this page, and in-vivo testing claims are the brands' own.
The honest read
Ignore the percentages entirely on Amazon's sunscreen shelf: 19 of 27 listings are struck from exactly double the price, which is arithmetic rather than a discount. Nykaa's 12 per cent median is closer to a real cut, but a smaller badge does not automatically mean a lower price either.
Compare rupees per product, and where the pack size is stated, rupees per gram. On the two premium D2C sunscreens here Amazon is significantly cheaper; on the mass-market ones the two shops are within Rs. 10 of each other, and Nykaa's ratings run several times deeper. Buy the SPF 50 PA++++ formula you will actually reapply - that decision matters more than either shelf's pricing.

Is sunscreen cheaper on Nykaa or Amazon?
It depends on the product, and the discount badges will not tell you. In our 26 August 2026 read, Amazon was materially cheaper on two premium D2C sunscreens - The Derma Co's 1% Hyaluronic aqua gel at Rs. 235 against Rs. 615 on Nykaa, and Re'equil's Ultra Matte at Rs. 327 against Rs. 613 - although neither pair of listings states a pack size we could verify, so some of those gaps may be size rather than price. On closely matched mass-market products the two shops are within a few rupees: Deconstruct's gel sunscreen is Rs. 379 on both, Foxtale is Rs. 330 on Nykaa against Rs. 339 on Amazon, and the Dot & Key gels are Rs. 387 against Rs. 396. Each shop also stocks brands the other's sunscreen results did not return, so for several products there is no comparison to make.
Why does Amazon show 50% off on almost every sunscreen?
Because on 19 of the 27 sunscreen listings we pulled, the stated MRP is exactly twice the selling price - Rs. 379 against Rs. 758, Rs. 399 against Rs. 798, Rs. 517 against Rs. 1,034, Rs. 1,009 against Rs. 2,018. Amazon computes the badge arithmetically from whatever list price the seller enters, so a price doubled and then halved prints 50 per cent off every time, on every product, whatever it is worth. The pattern spans brands, price points and sellers, which makes it a pricing convention rather than a run of coincidences. Nykaa's shelf behaves differently: its median badge across 13 sunscreens is 12 per cent, its largest is 20, and none of its listings is struck from exactly double. Neither retailer's MRP is audited, so on both shelves the number worth comparing is what you pay.
Which SPF and PA rating should I buy in India?
SPF 50 with PA++++ is the sensible default for Indian conditions, and it is what almost every product on both shelves sells. SPF measures protection against UVB, the wavelength that causes burning, and the returns flatten fast - SPF 30 blocks roughly 97 per cent of UVB and SPF 50 about 98 per cent. The PA rating measures UVA protection, which drives tanning, pigmentation and photo-ageing, and PA++++ is the highest grade; in a country with year-round high UVA that rating matters more than the difference between SPF 30 and 50. The specification that actually decides the outcome is quantity and reapplication: the laboratory SPF is measured at 2 mg per square centimetre, roughly a third of a teaspoon for a face, and most people apply a quarter of that and never reapply. A cheaper sunscreen you use generously beats an expensive one you ration.
Do sunscreen prices include the pack size on these listings?
Inconsistently, which is the biggest obstacle to comparing them honestly. Several Amazon titles state a size - 50 ml, 50 g, 60 ml - because sellers write those titles and many use the size as a search keyword. None of the 13 Nykaa sunscreen listings in our pull stated a size in the product name. That is why this page publishes no price-per-gram figures: computing one from a size scraped out of a title on one side and guessed on the other would produce confident numbers built on nothing. It also means a large same-brand price gap - such as The Derma Co's Rs. 235 on Amazon against Rs. 615 on Nykaa - may be comparing different pack sizes. Check the size on the product page before treating any gap on this page as settled.
Are the customer ratings on these sunscreens useful?
The counts are; the scores are not. Every sunscreen across both shelves in this read scores between 3.9 and 4.7, a band too narrow to separate anything, and most sit at 4.2 or 4.3. The counts differ enormously: Nykaa's Neutrogena Ultrasheer listing carries 327,961 ratings and its Dot & Key sunscreen 168,155, while the deepest count anywhere on Amazon's sunscreen shelf is 41,351 on The Derma Co aqua gel. A product judged by three hundred thousand people at 4.4 is a different quality of evidence from one judged by three hundred at 4.3, even though the stars look identical. For sunscreen specifically, the useful signals in reviews are texture, white cast and whether it stings the eyes - none of which a star score captures.
