Gulmarg Trip 2026: Gondola Tickets, Ski Season, Hotels, How to Reach

Gulmarg runs on two completely different price calendars. In winter it is India's serious ski resort — powder on Apharwat, instructors, equipment rental, and hotel rates to match. From spring it reverts to the flower meadow its name means, and rates fall with the snow line.

The two-stage gondola is the spine of every Gulmarg itinerary. Phase 1 climbs from Gulmarg (2,690 m) to Kongdoori in about 15 minutes; Phase 2 continues to the Apharwat shoulder at roughly 4,200 m in another 35. Current fares run about Rs. 800 for Phase 1 and Rs. 1,000 for Phase 2.

The rules that catch people out:

• Online-only. Tickets sell through the J&K Cable Car Corporation portal; there is no walk-up counter. Touts outside sell marked-up or invalid tickets — skip them.
• Phase 2 is rationed. Roughly half as many Phase 2 tickets are issued as Phase 1 each day. In season, book both phases together two to three days ahead; Phase 2 is only honoured when Phase 1 is running.
• Weather owns the top station. Wind closes Phase 2 with no notice. Ride it in the morning slot — closures and afternoon queues both worsen after lunch.
• Altitude is real at 4,200 m. Go slow at the top, skip it with young children or heart conditions, and carry layers even in June — it can snow up there while the meadow below is in flowers.

Gulmarg has no airport and no railway station — everything routes through Srinagar, 50 km away. Fly into Sheikh ul-Alam International (nonstops from Delhi, Mumbai and Chandigarh; one-stop from most other metros — our Srinagar flight guide has the city-by-city fare maths), then it is a two-hour taxi via Tangmarg for Rs. 2,500-3,500 one-way. The budget alternative — bus or shared cab to Tangmarg, then a short taxi up the final 12 km of switchbacks — costs a few hundred rupees but takes three to four hours.

By rail, the Vande Bharat from Jammu Tawi and Katra now runs to Srinagar six days a week, which makes train-plus-taxi a genuine peak-season alternative from Delhi or Chandigarh. In winter, ask your hotel about the Tangmarg road before you land: after heavy snowfall, cars may need chains for the final climb, and hotels routinely arrange 4x4 transfers.

Gulmarg's hotel map is small — a ring of properties around the meadow — and the decision is really distance-to-gondola versus rate.

Two location notes. In ski season, proximity wins: gondola slots are morning-weighted, and staying on the meadow means you ski while day-trippers are still on the Tangmarg road. In summer, the calculus flips — Tangmarg or even a Srinagar base with a Gulmarg day trip works fine, since the meadow, ponies and Phase 1 comfortably fit a day. Book refundable rates in winter regardless: snowfall closes the road often enough that a locked non-refundable room is a gamble.

1. Pick July-September or the season edges if snow is not the point — the same meadow costs a fraction of February.
2. Book the gondola yourself, online, 2-3 days out. Both phases together, morning slot, no touts.
3. Fly midweek into Srinagar with a price alert running — or train to Srinagar via the Vande Bharat when airfares spike.
4. Split the transfer — Tangmarg by shared cab plus a local taxi up saves most of the Rs. 2,500-3,500 direct fare.
5. Sleep in Tangmarg in summer, on the meadow in winter. Pay for proximity only when proximity earns it.
6. Keep winter bookings refundable — the road, the gondola and the weather all reserve the right to change your plans.
7. Rent ski gear in Gulmarg, not before — rental and instructor rates on the ground undercut package mark-ups.
