How to Reach: 90 km From Srinagar, One Turn Off NH44

From the airport it is a 2.5-3 hour, 90 km drive down NH44 through Anantnag, then up the Lidder valley. One-way taxis run about Rs. 2,800-3,700 for a sedan and Rs. 3,400-4,500 for an SUV; a same-day return costs Rs. 5,500-7,000. Shared cabs and buses via Anantnag cost a few hundred rupees and take four hours or more.
The rail option matters more every year: the Vande Bharat from Jammu Tawi and Katra stops at Srinagar, and ordinary services on the valley line stop at Anantnag — from where Pahalgam is a 45 km, roughly 90-minute taxi up the valley. Coming from Jammu, train to Anantnag plus a local cab is now the cheapest sensible routing.
Timing the transfer: leave Srinagar by mid-morning. The Anantnag stretch of NH44 carries convoy and market traffic that thickens through the afternoon, and the last hour up the Lidder is a road you want in daylight.
The Union-Cab Rule: Budget for the Jeep
The single most misunderstood line in a Pahalgam budget: the inner-valley roads to Betaab Valley, Aru Valley and Chandanwari are reserved for Pahalgam's local taxi union. Your Srinagar taxi or rental parks in town, and you hire a union jeep — roughly Rs. 1,500-2,200 for the standard full-day, three-valley circuit. Rates are posted at the stand and drivers hold to them; this is a fixed cost, not a negotiation.
What each stop is: Betaab Valley (named for the film shot there) is the manicured riverside park, 15 minutes out; Chandanwari is the snow point and the Amarnath trailhead; Aru is the furthest and the best — a herding village at the head of open meadows, and the trailhead for the Kolahoi and Tarsar-Marsar treks. Baisaran, the 'mini Switzerland' meadow above town, is reached separately — by pony or a two-hour walk, not by road.
