We read two marketplaces on the morning of 24 October 2026 for two unrelated price pages — 243 fitness and flask listings on Flipkart, 186 kurta, sweatshirt and handbag listings on AJIO. They turned out to demonstrate the same problem from opposite ends.
Flipkart repeats the review count: 47 of its 195 rated listings share their exact rating and count with another tile. AJIO publishes no ratings at all and repeats the product name instead, with six different kurtas sharing one title. Either way the tie-breaker is gone.
📅 Update log:
24 Oct 2026: first published. All prices, stated MRPs, discount badges, star averages, rating counts and product titles read from flipkart.com's own search results and ajio.com's own search API on 24 October 2026, logged out, from India, nothing purchased. Listings were treated as sharing a rating pool only on an exact match of both average and count, and as sharing a name only on an exact match of the full title string. AJIO's same-named listings were checked for duplicate images by byte hash before the finding was stated.
We read two marketplaces on the same morning, 24 October 2026: 243 fitness and flask listings from Flipkart's own search results, and 186 kurta, sweatshirt and handbag listings from AJIO's own search API. The shelves have nothing in common and the reads were done for separate price pages.
Both ended up demonstrating the same problem from opposite directions. On Flipkart the product name usually tells you which item you are looking at and the review count does not. On AJIO the review count does not exist and the name frequently does not tell you either. In both cases the signal a shopper would use to choose between two similar tiles is missing.
The two reads side by side
| Measure | Flipkart | AJIO |
|---|
| Listings read | 243 | 186 |
| Queries | 4 (fitness and flasks) | 3 (kurta, sweatshirt, handbag) |
| Distinct product names | 233 | 166 |
| Names used by more than one listing | 9 | 12 |
| Listings sharing a name with another | 19 (7.8%) | 32 (17.2%) |
| Largest group under one name | 3 listings | 6 listings |
| Listings publishing a star rating | 195 (80.2%) | 0 (0%) |
| Shared rating pools | 18 | n/a — no ratings published |
| Listings sharing a rating pool | 47 (24.1% of rated) | n/a |
| Largest shared rating pool | 5 listings, 4.0 / 29,383 | n/a |
| Widest price spread inside one shared group | 3.17x (Rs. 156–495) | 2.29x (Rs. 317–727) |
| Discount badge range | 4% to 92%, median 69% | 6% to 89%, median 65% |
| Stated MRP as a multiple of price, median | 3.22x | 2.85x |
Read the two rating rows together. Flipkart publishes a star average and a rating count on 195 of its 243 listings — but 47 of those 195 share their exact average and exact count with at least one other listing. AJIO publishes a rating on none of its 186.
Now read the two name rows together. Flipkart's 243 listings carry 233 distinct names, so a name there is close to an identifier. AJIO's 186 carry 166, and a single name can cover six separate listings.
Flipkart: the review count repeats
| Group | Listings | Prices | Stated MRPs | Rating shown on every one |
|---|
| SLOVIC resistance bands | 5 | Rs. 156, 217, 301, 375, 495 | Rs. 1,099 – 3,999 | 4.0 / 29,383 |
| SKYFIT gym gloves | 5 | Rs. 183, 188, 190 (3 of the 5) | Rs. 499 – 599 | 4.2 / 37,867 |
| MILTON Eiffel flasks | 4 | Rs. 312, 404, 416 | Rs. 410 – 505 | 4.2 / 943 |
| BOLDFIT gym gloves | 3 | Rs. 289, 299, 299 | Rs. 799 | 4.2 / 6,517 |
| HILTON flasks | 3 | Rs. 386, 528, 582 | Rs. 920 – 1,320 | 3.8 / 797 |
| MILTON Eco-Flip 500 | 2 | Rs. 632, 717 | Rs. 745 – 810 | 4.2 / 25,862 |
| NIVIA Scorpion glove | 2 | Rs. 326, 409 | Rs. 449 – 475 | 4.0 / 178 |
Five SLOVIC resistance band listings priced Rs. 156 to Rs. 495 all display 4.0 stars from 29,383 ratings. That is a 3.17x price spread under one review history. The SKYFIT glove pool is larger still in raw terms — 37,867 ratings, the biggest shared count in the read — across five listings, three of which sit within Rs. 7 of one another.
This is ordinary variant grouping and nothing about it is improper. Flipkart groups variants of a product and shows the group's reviews on each listing in the group; that is documented platform behaviour, we have not read a single review, and nothing here suggests any rating is fake, bought or improperly placed.
It is also not a cheap-brand phenomenon. MILTON, an established housewares house, shows 4.2 / 943 on three Eiffel listings that are two different capacities — a 480 ml at Rs. 312 and two 910 ml at Rs. 404 and Rs. 416 — so the grouping spans a near-doubling of volume. NIVIA shows 4.0 / 178 on a Scorpion glove listed at both Rs. 326 and Rs. 409.
The practical consequence is narrow and specific: if you are choosing between two Flipkart tiles and using "which has more reviews" to break the tie, and they happen to share a pool, you are comparing a number to itself. On this read that applies to roughly one rated listing in four.
AJIO: the product name repeats instead
| Product name | Listings | Prices | Stated MRPs | Badge range |
|---|
| AVAASA MIX N' MATCH Women Floral Print Straight Kurta | 6 | Rs. 289, 305, 329, 341, 347, 354 | Rs. 499 and Rs. 599 | 29% – 49% |
| AVAASA MIX N' MATCH Women Embroidered Straight Kurta | 5 | Rs. 317, 341, 425, 559, 727 | Rs. 599, 999, 1,299 | 29% – 47% |
| NEONOMAD Men Regular Fit Sweatshirt | 3 | Rs. 420, 432, 435 | Rs. 1,499 and Rs. 1,799 | 71% – 76% |
| Nyrika Women Embroidered Straight Kurta Set | 2 | Rs. 483, 660 | Rs. 2,299 and Rs. 2,999 | 78% – 79% |
| Zouk Women Classic Dual Compartment Satchel Handbag | 2 | Rs. 1,193, 1,359 | Rs. 5,799 on both | 77% – 79% |
Six AJIO listings carry the identical title "AVAASA MIX N' MATCH Women Floral Print Straight Kurta" and sell at Rs. 289, Rs. 305, Rs. 329, Rs. 341, Rs. 347 and Rs. 354. We checked whether this was one garment listed six times, because that would be a different and more serious finding. It is not. Our upload step hashes image bytes before sending them to our CDN and rejected none of the six as duplicates, and we viewed all six photographs together: an orange floral, a pink floral, a teal with gold dot work, a lilac stripe, a black sleeveless and a cream floral.
So these are six different kurtas sharing one name string. Nothing improper is alleged; the consequence is simply that on AJIO the title is a category description rather than a product identifier, and the photograph is the only thing that distinguishes the tiles. One of the six is titled "Floral Print" and shows a black sleeveless garment.
And because AJIO publishes no ratings, there is no second signal to fall back on. The second AVAASA name is worse on price: five listings from Rs. 317 to Rs. 727, a 2.29x spread, with three of them stating the identical Rs. 599 MRP and selling at Rs. 317, Rs. 341 and Rs. 425.
On neither site does the discount badge sort the prices
This is the part that costs real money, and it holds on both marketplaces.
On AJIO, among the six listings sharing one name, the deepest badge (49%, Rs. 305) is not the cheapest tile (Rs. 289, badged 42%) — because the first states a Rs. 599 MRP and the second a Rs. 499 one. Among the NEONOMAD sweatshirts, the tile badged 76% costs Rs. 12 more than the one badged 72%.
On Flipkart, the shelf badge climbs as the ticket price falls — median 60% on vacuum flasks, 66% on gym gloves, 75% on skipping ropes, 78% on resistance bands — so a deep badge is mostly telling you which shelf you are on. The extreme is a Rs. 62 skipping rope against a stated Rs. 799, a 12.9x multiple; eight of the 243 listings state an MRP above 8x.
A stated MRP is the figure a listing prints. We report these and divide by them; nothing here asserts that any such figure is false or improper, and identical strike-throughs across sellers are ordinary commerce.
What to actually do on each site
- On Flipkart, do not break a tie on review count alone. Check whether the two tiles show the identical average and the identical count — if they do, they are one pool and the number cannot separate them. Compare price, stated capacity or resistance, and seller instead.
- On AJIO, open the photograph before comparing two prices. The title may be shared with five other garments. There is no rating to fall back on, so the image is the product description.
- On both, scroll past the first result under a repeated name. In the AJIO group of six, the Rs. 289 listing sat below three dearer tiles with the same title. In the Flipkart BOLDFIT and NIVIA pairs, the cheaper listing was further down.
- Treat the badge as a shelf signal, not a value one, on either site. Flipkart runs 4% to 92% and AJIO 6% to 89%, and on both the percentage is reporting the stated MRP rather than the deal.
- Watch for the same photograph. Two Flipkart listings we tried to seat on a separate page were byte-identical images of items already shown, at Rs. 10 and Rs. 83 more — same photo, same rating pool, different price.
Method, and what we did not test
['Both reads were taken on 24 October 2026, logged out, from India, with nothing purchased and customer service not contacted. Flipkart figures come from its own search results across four queries, two pages each; AJIO figures from its own search API across three queries, two pages each. Every count, median and range quoted is computed over the full 243 and 186 respectively, not over the examples shown.', 'Two listings were treated as sharing a rating pool only when both the star average and the rating count matched exactly — 4.0 and 29,383, not 4.0 and a similar figure. Two listings were treated as sharing a name only when the full title string displayed by the retailer was identical.', "We did not buy, open, wear or test anything, and no claim is made about fabric, fit, latex grade, grip, stitching, insulation hours or resistance accuracy. Product descriptions are the listings' own printed words. Our descriptions of what each AJIO photograph shows are our own reading of the published image. The two shelves are not comparable to each other on price, and nothing here does so — the comparison is between how the two sites structure their listings, not between what they charge."]
Frequently Asked Questions
Why do several Flipkart listings at different prices show the same number of reviews?
Because Flipkart groups variants of one product and displays the group's review pool on every listing in that group. In our read of 243 listings on 24 October 2026, 47 of the 195 that carry a rating (24.1%) share their exact star average and exact count with at least one other listing, across 18 pools. The largest covers five SLOVIC resistance bands at Rs. 156, Rs. 217, Rs. 301, Rs. 375 and Rs. 495, every one showing 4.0 stars from 29,383 ratings. This is normal platform behaviour and nothing here suggests any review is fake or improperly placed. The practical effect is that review count is not a safe tie-breaker between two tiles that share a pool. Check whether the two numbers are identical rather than merely similar; if they are, use price, stated spec and seller instead.
Why do several AJIO listings have exactly the same product name?
On AJIO the title functions as a category description rather than a product identifier. In our read of 186 listings, twelve names were each used by more than one listing, covering 32 of the 186. The largest is "AVAASA MIX N' MATCH Women Floral Print Straight Kurta", the title of six separate listings at Rs. 289 to Rs. 354. We specifically checked whether these were one garment listed six times, and they are not — we hashed the image bytes, found no duplicates, and viewed all six photographs, which show six clearly different kurtas. So nothing improper is happening. It does mean you cannot tell the tiles apart without opening each one, and one of the six is titled "Floral Print" while showing a black sleeveless garment.
Which site is easier to shop, Flipkart or AJIO?
On this specific question — being able to tell two similar listings apart — Flipkart gives you more to work with, but neither is clean. Flipkart publishes a star rating on 80.2% of its listings and uses 233 distinct names across 243 listings, so the name usually identifies the item even when the review count does not. AJIO publishes a rating on none of its 186 and repeats names more often (12 names over 32 listings, against 9 over 19 on Flipkart). We are not saying one marketplace is better than the other — the two shelves we read sell completely different things, the prices are not comparable, and this page tests nothing about delivery, returns, sizing or product quality. It is a narrow comparison of how the two sites structure their listing data.
Does a bigger discount badge mean a better price on either site?
No, and on both sites the badge regularly points the wrong way. The sharpest AJIO case: three listings share one title, all state a Rs. 599 MRP, and they sell at Rs. 317, Rs. 341 and Rs. 425 while badging 47%, 43% and 29% — so the percentage is simply reporting the stated MRP. Among the NEONOMAD sweatshirts the tile badged 76% costs Rs. 12 more than the one badged 72%. On Flipkart the badge mostly tracks which shelf you are on: median 60% on vacuum flasks, 66% on gloves, 75% on skipping ropes, 78% on resistance bands. Badges run 4% to 92% on Flipkart and 6% to 89% on AJIO, with median stated MRPs of 3.22x and 2.85x the selling price.
Is it a problem that AJIO does not show star ratings?
We cannot tell you why AJIO does not publish them — that is its decision and we have not asked. What we can report is that none of the 186 listings in our 24 October 2026 read carried a star average or a rating count, on any of three queries, which is consistent with earlier reads of the same API and so looks like ordinary behaviour rather than an outage. The effect is that AJIO's repeated product names matter more than Flipkart's repeated review counts do. On Flipkart, when the review count fails as a tie-breaker you still have a reasonably specific product title. On AJIO, when the title fails there is no second signal at all, so the photograph carries the whole job. That is the one concrete reason this page suggests opening every same-named AJIO tile before buying.
Prices & codes last verified: October 24, 2026
All prices, stated MRPs, discount badges, star averages, rating counts and product titles on this page were read from flipkart.com's own search results and ajio.com's own search API on 24 October 2026, logged out, from India. Nothing was purchased, opened, worn or tested, and no claim is made about fabric, fit, latex grade, grip, stitching, insulation hours, resistance accuracy, delivery, returns or after-sales service on either marketplace. Product descriptions are the listings' own printed words, reproduced and not independently verified; our descriptions of what an AJIO photograph shows are our own reading of the published image. Where we report that Flipkart listings share a rating pool, we mean only that the star average and rating count displayed on each are identical; this is how variant grouping works and nothing here alleges that any review is fake, bought, incentivised or improperly placed, nor have we read or assessed any individual review. Where we report that AJIO listings share a product name, we mean only that the title string is identical; we hashed the image bytes and viewed the photographs, the garments are different, and nothing here alleges duplicate listing or misdescription. A stated MRP is the figure a listing prints; nothing here asserts that any such figure is false or improper, and identical names, identical strike-throughs or overlapping prices across listings are ordinary commerce, reported as fact and not as allegation. The two shelves read are different product categories and their prices are not compared; this page compares listing structure only and is not a ranking of the two retailers. Prices change without notice — check the live listing before buying. Zoutons may earn a commission on purchases made through links on this page, which never affects what we report.
