Five rules for buying shoes on Amazon

First: read the stated MRP before the percentage, because a Rs. 9,099 claim on a Rs. 1,410 shoe is doing the work the shoe cannot. Second: check the review count, not the star average - a 5.0 from two people says nothing, and nineteen of the listings we read have fewer than ten reviews. Third: compare the brand's whole band, since Nike's six listings never passed 30 per cent while Campus's 56 ran from 15 to 71 - the same test this series applied to Amazon's phone shelf. Fourth: buy for the surface - a non-marking court sole, a firm training platform and a cushioned road runner are three different shoes and only one of them suits your week. Fifth: prefer a small gap on a plausible claim, which is exactly what turned up when we read the kitchen aisle the same way.

What we skipped — and why

What we skipped, and why: 155 of the 175 listings. Campus alone accounted for 56 of them and we seated one, because after the fourth listing at a different price with the same wide badge range there is nothing further to learn from the fifth. We left out 15 of PUMA's 16, eight of Reebok's twelve and seven of U.S. Polo Assn.'s eight for the same reason - they sat inside bands the seated cards already describe. We also dropped a second SPARX listing that carried the identical product title to one we seated at a different price and review count, because two identical headings on one page reads as an error rather than a finding. Two Red Tape listings beyond the three seated were left out; their numbers repeat what the seated three already show. Nothing was excluded for being a bad product.

What we look for

We check the claim before we look at the discount

A percentage is a subtraction from a number the seller chose. Across the 175 listings we read on August 10, 36 claimed an MRP of Rs. 5,000 or more, and eight of those were selling below Rs. 1,500 - one ATHCO listing, five from Red Tape and two from Doctor Extra Soft. The highest claim we found anywhere was Rs. 9,099, on a shoe selling at Rs. 1,410. Where a claim is not credible on its face, we say so on the card rather than repeating the badge.

We weigh the badge against the crowd behind it

The twelve listings in this read badged 70 per cent or more carry a median review count of 410 and a median stated MRP of Rs. 5,999. The twenty-six badged 35 per cent or less carry a median review count of 1,956 and a median stated MRP of Rs. 1,074 - and both groups sell for roughly the same money, medians of Rs. 1,102 and Rs. 828. Nineteen of the 175 listings we read have fewer than ten reviews in total, and two carry no rating at all.

We show the rating only where a real sample exists

A rating pill appears on this page only where Amazon publishes both a star average and at least a hundred ratings. Two of our seated picks fall below that line - the Red Tape lace-up with two ratings and the Red Tape slip-on with none - and neither gets a pill, because a 5.0 from two people is not evidence and we will not dress it up as one. We have not substituted an editorial score anywhere, and we report low averages, including a 3.7, as readily as high ones.

We read what the shoe is built for, not what it is called

Half the words in these titles are decoration; a few are specifications. A non-marking sole means an indoor court. A training shoe is a flatter, firmer platform for gym floors, not a cushioned road runner. A wide-feet barefoot last is a genuine fit difference for anyone whose forefoot is pinched by standard trainers. A mesh slip-on has no laces to adjust, so it either fits or it does not. Those distinctions decide whether a shoe is right for you; the badge never does.

We name the brand's whole band, not one listing

One listing tells you very little; a brand's spread tells you how it prices. Nike's six listings ran 15 to 30 per cent, adidas's nine ran 45 to 57, Skechers's nine ran 48 to 59, Bata's five ran 30 to 46. Against those, Campus's 56 listings ran 15 to 71 and PUMA's sixteen ran 30 to 68 at prices from Rs. 1,289 to Rs. 9,799. A narrow band means a company defending a price it charges elsewhere. A wide one means the number is set per promotion.

FAQs

Are 80 per cent off shoe deals on Amazon real?

The subtraction is real; the number being subtracted from is the seller's own claim. In our August 10, 2026 read of 175 Amazon shoe listings, the twelve badged 70 per cent or more carried a median stated MRP of Rs. 5,999 against a median selling price of Rs. 1,102. The twenty-six badged 35 per cent or less carried a median stated MRP of Rs. 1,074 and a median selling price of Rs. 828. The two groups cost about the same to buy. Only one of them looks like a bargain, and the difference is entirely in the claim.

Which is the most-bought running shoe on Amazon India?

Of everything we read, the ASIAN Wonder-13 men's running shoe at Rs. 569 carries by far the largest sample: 112,075 ratings at 4.0, more than seven times the next largest on our page. Its badge is 43 per cent, off a stated Rs. 999 - a gap of Rs. 430. SPARX listings follow with 9,547 and 11,787 ratings, and Bata's slip-on at Rs. 349 has 7,530. None of the shoes carrying the deepest discounts in our read came close to those numbers.

Why do Nike and adidas discount so much less than other brands?

Because they have their own stores and department-store distribution, so the stated MRP is a price they expect to actually charge somewhere. Nike's six listings in our read were badged 15 to 30 per cent, with a median of 22 - the tightest band of any brand we saw. adidas ran 45 to 57 across nine listings and Skechers 48 to 59 across nine. Compare Campus, whose 56 listings ran anywhere from 15 to 71 per cent. A narrow band is a company defending a real price; a wide one means the number is being set per promotion.

How many reviews should a shoe have before I trust the rating?

Enough that one enthusiastic buyer cannot move the average. We show a rating on this page only where Amazon publishes both a star figure and at least a hundred ratings. Nineteen of the 175 listings we read have fewer than ten reviews in total and two carry no rating at all, including one selling at Rs. 940 against a claimed Rs. 5,699. A 5.0 from two people and a 4.0 from 112,075 are not the same kind of fact, and a listing with a huge claim and no crowd deserves more suspicion, not less.

What should I actually look for in a shoe listing?

The words that describe what it is built for. A non-marking sole means an indoor court and is what badminton halls require. A training shoe is a flatter, firmer platform for gym floors and lateral work, not a cushioned road runner. A wide-feet or barefoot last is a genuine fit difference if standard trainers pinch your forefoot. A mesh slip-on has no laces, so it either fits or it does not. Those four distinctions will decide whether you keep the shoes. The percentage on the badge will not.

More Amazon coverage on Zoutons

How Zoutons picks deals Zoutons may earn a commission when you buy through links on this page. Every price, stated MRP, discount percentage, star rating and review count here was read on August 10, 2026 from amazon.in's own search results across four queries - running shoes for men, sports shoes for women, casual sneakers men and walking shoes - with sponsored placements dropped and duplicate ASINs and repeated images removed, and all of them can change without notice. That yielded 175 listings, of which we seated 20. Product titles shown as headings were read from each product's own Amazon page, because Amazon's search results frequently return a brand name alone in place of a title. The derived figures we quote - that the twelve listings badged 70 per cent or more carry a median stated MRP of Rs. 5,999 and a median review count of 410, that the twenty-six badged 35 per cent or less carry a median MRP of Rs. 1,074 and a median review count of 1,956, that their median selling prices are Rs. 1,102 and Rs. 828, that 36 listings claim an MRP of Rs. 5,000 or more and eight of those sell below Rs. 1,500, that nineteen listings have fewer than ten reviews and two carry no rating at all, and every per-brand range and median - are ours, calculated from those rows. A stated MRP is the seller's own figure and we have not verified that any product here was ever sold at it; where a claim is not credible on its face we say so on the card. A rating pill appears only where Amazon publishes a star average and at least a hundred ratings, and we have not substituted an editorial score anywhere. Ratings and review counts belong to a listing rather than to a product, and a single product can appear under several listings with different counts. Construction and fit terms quoted here - memory foam, non-marking, mesh, barefoot, wide fit, training, cushioned midsole - are the sellers' own wording, reported and not endorsed; we make no claim about materials, durability, drop, stack height or the suitability of any shoe for any injury or gait. We have not worn, run in, weighed or measured anything on this page. Sizing varies between brands and cannot be judged from a listing. Product images are Amazon's own listing images, rehosted. Return windows, size charts and the current selling price should be confirmed before you order.
