Nineteen of Twenty-Two Udemy Courses Cost Exactly Rs. 399

Here is the thing that makes Udemy's individual-course pricing hard to compare with anything: it barely varies. We read 22 course cards on Udemy's development category on 25 August 2026. Nineteen were priced at exactly Rs. 399. The remaining three were Rs. 409, Rs. 449 and Rs. 469.

The list prices behind them ranged from Rs. 799 to Rs. 4,229, which produced badges from 50 to 89 per cent - all of them arriving at the same floor. A 60-hour Python bootcamp with a stated Rs. 3,199 list price and a short prompt-engineering course with a stated Rs. 799 list price both cost Rs. 399 to buy.

Udemy's own Personal Plan page separately states a single-course price range of Rs. 599.00 to Rs. 7,900.00, which is what the platform says courses normally cost. Nothing we read that morning was inside that range. The practical conclusion is that the Rs. 399 floor is the price, and the percentages on the cards describe a list price rather than a discount you are receiving.

That matters for this comparison because it makes the Udemy side of the arithmetic unusually stable. You can plan around Rs. 399 a course. You cannot plan around a Coursera Specialization that charges Rs. 1,699 a month for as long as it takes you.

Eighteen courses is more than most people finish in a year. That is the number Coursera's promotional annual rate costs, and the standard annual rate is double it. If you take two or three courses a year - which is what most working adults actually do - Udemy costs you Rs. 800 to Rs. 1,200 and you keep the courses permanently.

The subscription case is genuinely different, though, and it is worth stating fairly. Both plans are designed for someone who studies continuously and wants to abandon courses freely - start six, finish two, switch topics without a purchase decision each time. If that is how you learn, Udemy's Personal Plan at Rs. 500 a month is the cheapest subscription on this page by a factor of four, and it pays for itself from the second course in any given month.

The Differences That Are Not About Price

Three structural differences decide whether the price gap is worth paying, and none of them appears on a pricing table.

Who issues the credential. Coursera's page names 350+ universities and companies as partners - Google, IBM, Microsoft, Meta, Stanford, Duke, Adobe and the University of Michigan are all displayed on it - and Plus includes unlimited certificates. Udemy issues its own completion certificate for courses taught by independent instructors. If your field cares who signed the paper, that is the difference you are paying for.
Whether access ends. A purchased Udemy course is lifetime access to that course and its materials, in Udemy's own words. Both subscriptions - Udemy Personal Plan and Coursera Plus - end when you stop paying, and so does access to everything inside them.
How much of the catalogue you get. Udemy's Personal Plan covers 28,000 courses out of 250,000, which the company describes as its highest-rated curated selection. Anything outside that must still be bought individually, at the Rs. 399-ish floor.
How you can back out. Coursera offers a 7-day free trial on monthly billing and a 14-day money-back window on annual billing, with the caveat printed on its own page that certificates earned in those first 14 days are revoked if you take the refund. Udemy's page states that where a subscription begins with a free trial, the first billing cycle is charged at the end of it.

What we read, and the two figures we could not reconcile

The Coursera annual price appeared twice, at two different figures. The plan panel showed Rs. 13,999 per year with a 14-day money-back guarantee; a banner near the top of the same page showed Rs. 7,499 per year, written as Rs. 625 a month billed annually, alongside a 'Save 40%' label on the billing toggle. We have not resolved which applies to a given account, because that is decided at checkout and we did not create one. Both are in the table.

Udemy's own stated course price range does not match its own course prices. The Personal Plan page prints Rs. 599.00-Rs. 7,900.00 as the individual-course range. Every one of the 22 cards we read in the development category was between Rs. 399 and Rs. 469. We report both rather than assuming which is the exception.

What we did not do: create an account on either platform, enter a payment method, start a trial, complete a checkout, or verify what either page charges a returning user or a user outside India. We have not compared course quality, instructor credentials or completion rates, and we have not assessed what any certificate from either platform is worth to an employer.

Which One to Pay For

The honest read

If you take a handful of courses a year, buy them on Udemy. At a Rs. 399 floor, three courses cost Rs. 1,197 and you keep them permanently. No subscription on this page is competitive with that unless you study continuously.

If you study every month, Udemy's Personal Plan is the cheapest subscription here by four times. Rs. 500 a month against Coursera Plus's Rs. 2,099, and it pays for itself from your second course in any month. The limitation is the curated 28,000-course collection rather than the full catalogue.

Pay Coursera's premium only for the issuer. The Rs. 7,499 to Rs. 13,999 a year buys credentials signed by named universities and companies rather than by the platform. That is a real difference in some fields and worth nothing in others - and it is the only thing in this comparison that justifies the gap.

The comparison is not quite like for like in one important respect: a purchased Udemy course is yours permanently, while both subscriptions stop working the day you stop paying. That cuts the other way too - nobody watches 35 courses, so the honest version of this arithmetic is that Udemy is dramatically cheaper if you take two or three courses a year, and the platforms converge only if you genuinely study continuously.
