A shrinking discount badge usually means a sale is ending. On Udemy this month it means the opposite: the course got dearer. We read the same catalogue pages on 1 September and again on 21 October 2026, and twenty courses turned up in both. Every one had gone up by Rs. 30 to Rs. 50. Every one had exactly the same struck-through price as before. The percentage had no choice but to fall — which is a tidy demonstration of why the badge is the last number on a Udemy page worth reading.

📅 Update log:
21 October 2026 — First publication. Read the same day: udemy.com's development and business catalogue pages, rendered in a headless browser because udemy.com returns 403 to a plain request, logged out, from India, with nothing purchased, no coupon applied and Udemy not contacted; 44 course rows captured. Compared against our own published read of the same development catalogue on 1 September 2026 (blog “Udemy Course Prices September 2026”), which recorded 22 courses at Rs. 449 to Rs. 609 against struck prices of Rs. 799 to Rs. 4,229. Recorded from this comparison: 20 courses match by name across the two reads; all 20 are dearer in October; all 20 carry an unchanged struck price; all 20 therefore display a smaller badge. Rises of +Rs. 30 on one course, +Rs. 40 on sixteen and +Rs. 50 on three, being +5.0% to +8.7%. The page band moved from Rs. 449–609 to Rs. 479–659 while the struck range held at Rs. 799–4,229. Highest badge on the page fell from 86% to 85%. On the October read, Rs. 479 is the floor (6 courses, badges 40% to 75%) and Rs. 499 the commonest price (10 courses, badges 38% to 85%). Udemy publishes no price history; the September figures are our own dated read and are presented as such, not as a merchant statement. Udemy prices are personalised and run on rolling countdowns, catalogue listing pages were read rather than individual course pages, and no checkout was reached, so no price here is confirmed as the amount charged. No wrongdoing by Udemy is alleged.

Twenty courses, seven weeks apart, every one dearer

We read udemy.com's own development catalogue on 1 September 2026 and published the prices. We read the same pages again on 21 October 2026. Twenty courses appear in both reads under the same name.

All twenty had gone up. Every one of their struck-through prices was unchanged. So every one now shows a smaller discount badge than it did seven weeks ago.

That combination is the whole of this page. A course that was Rs. 509 at “86% off” is Rs. 549 at “85% off”, and the Rs. 3,549 struck above it has not moved a rupee.

The sharpest badge drops are on the newer AI courses, because they sit against a low struck price of Rs. 799 or Rs. 819 where a Rs. 40 rise eats a bigger share of the gap. The Complete Prompt Engineering for AI Bootcamp went from 38% to 33% off on a struck price that never changed.

The floor is up Rs. 30 and the ceiling is up Rs. 50, while the struck prices are identical at both ends. Rs. 799 was the lowest list price on the page in September and it is still the lowest today; Rs. 4,229 was the highest and still is.

Sixteen of the twenty moved by exactly Rs. 40. That uniformity is worth noticing: this reads as a price-band adjustment applied across the catalogue, not as individual courses being repriced on their merits. Nothing improper about that — it is how tiered pricing works — but it does mean the rise is not something you can dodge by picking a different course.

Ten courses cost exactly Rs. 499, and their badges run from 38% to 85%. The same money, the same checkout, a badge gap of 47 points. That gap is created entirely by the struck price above each course — Rs. 799 at one end, Rs. 3,289 at the other.

This is the practical rule for buying anything on Udemy: read the rupee figure and ignore the percentage. We made the same point in our guide to why one Udemy price shows two wildly different badges, and this October read is simply more evidence for it — this time with the badge shrinking while the price rose.

How both reads were taken, and what we cannot tell you

Both reads used the same method on the same pages. udemy.com returns 403 to a plain request, so the catalogue pages were rendered in a headless browser, logged out, from India, with nothing purchased and no coupon applied. The September read covered the development catalogue and is published in full on our September Udemy price page; the October read covered the development and business catalogues and captured 44 course rows, of which 20 match the September set by name.

Udemy publishes no price history, so the September figures here are our own dated record, not Udemy's. We are comparing our own two snapshots and saying so, rather than presenting a price history as though the merchant published one.

Udemy's displayed prices are personalised and run on rolling countdowns rather than fixed sale windows, so what you see may differ by account, login state, device and country. We read catalogue listing pages rather than individual course pages, and we did not reach a checkout, so no price here has been confirmed as the amount actually charged.

Nothing here alleges any wrongdoing by Udemy. Raising prices is ordinary business, the struck-through figures are Udemy's own list prices and it is entitled to leave them unchanged, and a badge that shrinks as a result is an arithmetic consequence rather than a misrepresentation.

What this does not tell you

It does not tell you Udemy is expensive. A Rs. 40 rise on a Rs. 509 course is still a Rs. 549 course, and whether that is good value is a judgement about the teaching, which we have not assessed and are not qualified to assess from a listing page.

Nor does it predict where prices go next. Two dated reads seven weeks apart establish that prices moved up in that window on those pages. They do not establish a trend, and we are not forecasting one. The only durable lesson is the one about the badge: it moved in the opposite direction to the thing that mattered.

Frequently Asked Questions

Did Udemy course prices go up in October 2026?
On the catalogue pages we read, yes — every single matched course was dearer. We read udemy.com's development catalogue on 1 September 2026 and published the figures, then read the same pages again on 21 October 2026. Twenty courses appear in both reads under the same name, and all twenty had gone up — by Rs. 30 on one, Rs. 40 on sixteen and Rs. 50 on three, which works out at 5.0% to 8.7%. The band for the whole page moved from Rs. 449–609 to Rs. 479–659. Not one matched course held its September price. We should be straight about the limits: Udemy publishes no price history, so the September side of this comparison is our own dated read rather than anything Udemy states, and Udemy's displayed price is personalised, so your screen may differ.
Why do the discount badges look smaller than before?
Because the struck-through price did not move and the real price did. Every one of the 20 matched courses shows exactly the same struck price in October as in September — Rs. 3,199, Rs. 3,549, Rs. 799 and so on, unchanged. When the price you actually pay rises underneath a fixed list price, the percentage between them has to shrink. So a course that read “86% off” in September reads “84%” or “85%” now, and the AI courses have moved more sharply: 44%→40%, 43%→38%, 38%→33% and 35%→31%. This is not a trick and we are not alleging one — the struck price is Udemy's own list price and it is entitled to leave it where it is. It is simply a useful demonstration that the badge moves for reasons that have nothing to do with you getting a better or worse deal. Here the badge got smaller and the course got dearer at the same time, which is the opposite of what a shrinking badge instinctively suggests.
What is the cheapest Udemy course right now?
Rs. 479 was the floor on the pages we read on 21 October 2026, shared by six courses — up from Rs. 449 on 1 September. The six are AI Coder: Complete Claude Code & Coding Agents, The Complete Claude Code & Claude Cowork Masterclass, The EU AI Act Explained, Intro to AI Agents and Agentic AI (all four at 40% off Rs. 799), AI — Ethics, Governance & Other Considerations for Businesses (61% off Rs. 1,239) and Build Your Own ChatGPT: LLM & Transformers From Scratch (75% off Rs. 1,919). Look at what that means: the same Rs. 479 buys a course badged 40% off and a course badged 75% off. The money leaving your account is identical. Udemy prices move on rolling, personalised countdowns, so treat Rs. 479 as the floor we saw rather than a price you are promised.
Is it worth waiting for a bigger Udemy sale?
On this evidence, waiting cost money rather than saving it. A reader who saw React — The Complete Guide at Rs. 509 on 1 September and held out for a better badge would be paying Rs. 549 today, with the badge one point lower. The thing to understand about Udemy is that the sale is more or less permanent — on both our reads, every course on the page was discounted, which means a “sale” banner is the normal state of the site rather than an event. So the badge is not a signal to act on, and nor is the countdown. The number worth tracking is the rupee price: on these pages it has sat between roughly Rs. 450 and Rs. 660 across seven weeks, and the realistic read is that a course in that band is at its ordinary price, not at an unusual low. We are not advising you either way on whether to buy — only that waiting for the percentage to improve is not a strategy these two reads support.
Why might the prices I see differ from the ones on this page?
Several reasons, and all of them are ordinary. Udemy personalises what it shows, so price, badge and countdown can differ by account, by whether you are logged in, by device and by country. We read these pages logged out, from India, with nothing bought and no coupon applied, which is a specific set of conditions and not necessarily yours. Udemy also runs rolling countdowns rather than fixed sale windows, so the figures turn over on their own schedule — we are reporting two dated snapshots, 1 September and 21 October 2026, not a continuous record. And we read catalogue listing pages, not the individual course pages, so we have not checked whether a course page shows a different figure. The price that governs your purchase is the one at Udemy's checkout.

Zoutons earns affiliate commission on some links on this page. It costs you nothing and it does not decide what we write. The October figures were read from udemy.com's own development and business catalogue pages on 21 October 2026, rendered in a headless browser, logged out, from India, with nothing purchased, no coupon applied and Udemy not contacted. The September figures are our own published read of 1 September 2026, not a price history published by Udemy — Udemy does not publish one, and we are comparing two of our own dated snapshots rather than a continuous record. Udemy's displayed prices, badges and countdowns are personalised and can differ by account, login state, device and country, so the figures you see may not match ours. We read catalogue listing pages rather than individual course pages and did not reach a checkout, so no price here is confirmed as the amount actually charged. NO WRONGDOING BY UDEMY IS ALLEGED. Raising prices is ordinary business; the struck-through figures are Udemy's own list prices and it is entitled to leave them unchanged; and a discount badge that shrinks because the sale price rose under a fixed list price is an arithmetic consequence, not a misrepresentation. What Udemy charges at checkout prevails over anything here.
