We read 122 courses across six subjects on 4 September 2026. Below: what the shelf actually costs, why 60 of the 122 are badged at exactly 86%, and the four fields on a course card that do carry information.

Four courses at Rs. 449, badged 44%, 69%, 70% and 71%
We read 122 courses across six of Udemy's category pages on 4 September 2026. Four of them are priced identically, at Rs. 449, and their discount badges read 44%, 69%, 70% and 71%.
Nothing about the courses explains that. What explains it is the number each is measured against. “Succeed in the Age of AI” lists at Rs. 799, so Rs. 449 is a 44% saving. “QuickBooks Online Certification Course” lists at Rs. 1,569, so the same Rs. 449 is a 71% saving. You pay the same money either way.
That is the whole mechanism of Udemy's badge, and once you have seen it you cannot unsee it on the site. The percentage is a statement about the list price. It is not a statement about the price, the length, the instructor or the quality of the course, and it is not comparable between two courses.

Rs. 40 separates the 40%-off courses from the 86%-off ones
Split the 122 courses by the list price they advertise and the pattern is exact. Eleven courses list at Rs. 999 or less (a median listed price of Rs. 799). Their median selling price is Rs. 479 and their median badge is 40%.
One hundred and eleven list above Rs. 999, at a median listed price of Rs. 3,469. Their median selling price is Rs. 519 and their median badge is 86%.
Forty rupees of difference in what you pay; forty-six percentage points of difference in what the badge claims. And the badge is remarkably uniform once you are in the high-list group: 60 of the 122 courses we read are badged at exactly 86% off, not 85% or 87%. That is a pricing rule showing through, not 122 independent commercial decisions.

₹ Why this is not an accusation. Udemy runs near-permanent promotional pricing and publishes both numbers plainly on every course card, which is more than many sites do. We are not saying any figure here is wrong; we cannot verify what any course has sold for historically and make no claim about it. The point is narrower and entirely practical: because the list prices vary from Rs. 799 to Rs. 6,939 while selling prices sit in a Rs. 550 band, the badge cannot be used to compare two courses.
Every category costs about the same
The six category pages we read are as tightly priced as each other. Photography has the lowest median at Rs. 479 and personal development and music the highest at Rs. 569 — a Rs. 90 spread across six entirely different subjects.
Every category's range starts at Rs. 449 or Rs. 459. The ceilings differ a little more: Rs. 639 for personal development, Rs. 689 for office productivity, Rs. 709 for photography, Rs. 719 for health and fitness, and Rs. 999 in finance and accounting, which holds the single most expensive course we found.
So if you are choosing between learning Photoshop and learning bookkeeping, price is not the variable. That sounds obvious stated plainly, but it is worth stating because the badges make the categories look wildly different — a Rs. 999 finance course off a listed Rs. 6,939 looks like a very different transaction from a Rs. 449 course off Rs. 799, and it is not.

What to compare instead
If the badge cannot separate two courses, something has to. The fields that do carry information on a Udemy card are the ones the badge distracts from: the rating and how many people gave it, the number of hours of video, when the course was last updated, and the instructor. A 2019 course with 90,000 ratings and a 2026 course with 40 are very different purchases at the same Rs. 519.
The second thing worth doing is checking the price twice. Udemy's promotional pricing moves, and the selling prices we read on 4 September 2026 are a snapshot rather than a fixed rate card. If a course you want shows Rs. 449 today, that is the number to act on; the Rs. 1,569 beside it is not a saving you have banked.
Third, if you are buying more than a couple of courses, do the arithmetic against a subscription rather than against the list prices. Read the badge as a fact about the list price. Courses listing above Rs. 999 are badged a median 86% off and cost Rs. 519; courses listing at or below Rs. 999 are badged a median 40% off and cost Rs. 479. The cheaper group is the one with the smaller badge.
Sort on ratings, recency and hours. Those fields differ between courses in ways that matter. The badge does not.

Why do Udemy courses always show 80% or 90% off?
Because the percentage is calculated from a listed price that is usually several thousand rupees while the selling price sits in a narrow band. Of the 122 courses we read on 4 September 2026, 111 listed above Rs. 999 — a median listed price of Rs. 3,469 — and sold at a median of Rs. 519, a median 86% badge. Sixty of the 122 were badged at exactly 86%, which is a pricing rule rather than 60 separate decisions. Udemy publishes both numbers openly on every card and runs near-permanent promotional pricing; we cannot verify what any course has sold for historically and allege no wrongdoing. The practical consequence is simply that the badge cannot be used to compare two courses.
How much does a Udemy course actually cost in India?
On the six category pages we read on 4 September 2026, courses ran Rs. 449 to Rs. 999 with a median of Rs. 519. Every category started at Rs. 449 or Rs. 459. The medians by subject were tight: photography Rs. 479, health and fitness Rs. 509, finance and accounting Rs. 524, office productivity Rs. 534, and personal development and music Rs. 569. The single most expensive course we found was a financial analyst training at Rs. 999. Udemy's pricing is promotional and moves frequently, so treat this as a band rather than a rate card, and note that these are prices shown to a logged-out visitor in India.
Is a 44% off Udemy course worse value than an 86% off one?
No — on our reading it is usually slightly better value in rupees. The 11 courses listing at Rs. 999 or less sold at a median Rs. 479 with a median 40% badge; the 111 listing above Rs. 999 sold at a median Rs. 519 with a median 86% badge. The clearest illustration is four courses all priced at Rs. 449 whose badges read 44%, 69%, 70% and 71%, purely because they list at Rs. 799, Rs. 1,429, Rs. 1,489 and Rs. 1,569. Same money, four different percentages. Compare the rupee price and then the rating count, hours of video and last-updated date.
What should I look at instead of the discount on Udemy?
The fields that genuinely differ between courses: the rating and the number of ratings behind it, the hours of video, the last-updated date and the instructor. A course with 90,000 ratings last updated this year and a course with 40 ratings from 2019 can sit at the same Rs. 519 with the same badge. Also check the price twice before buying, since Udemy's promotional pricing moves — the figure shown today is the one to act on, and the listed price beside it is not a saving you have banked. Is a Udemy subscription cheaper than buying courses?
It depends entirely on how many courses you finish, not on what any of them list at. With individual courses clustering around a median of Rs. 519 on the pages we read, the arithmetic is straightforward: a subscription pays off past a certain number of courses per month and does not below it.
