We read Amazon's hair oil listings on the morning of 24 September 2026 and divided every price by the volume on the bottle. Below: where the cheap oil is, the four products sold in two sizes at very different rates, and why this page carries no discount percentages at all.

The 37 listings came from amazon.in's own search results for "hair oil", "coconut hair oil" and "onion hair oil", read as a logged-out visitor in India with nothing purchased. Of the 120 rows returned, body lotions, shampoo bundles and spa kits were removed, rows were deduplicated by ASIN, and only listings stating a volume in their own title were kept — a per-100 ml rate is impossible without one. MRPs and discount percentages are deliberately absent; the section above explains why. Amazon re-prices without notice, so we re-read this shelf and log what has changed here.
A 15-fold spread, and the bottle size explains most of it
We read Amazon's hair oil shelf on 24 September 2026 and divided every price by the millilitres the listing states. The rates run from Rs. 25.80 to Rs. 396.00 per 100 ml - a fifteen-fold spread - against a median of Rs. 95.80.
At the cheap end are the big mass-market bottles: Hair & Care's 500 ml almond oil at Rs. 129 is Rs. 25.80 per 100 ml, and Parachute Advansed's 500 ml Amla Rosemary at Rs. 137 is Rs. 27.40, the latter with 46,971 ratings behind it. At the dear end are 50 ml and 100 ml bottles of onion and rosemary oils, several of them at Rs. 200 to Rs. 396 per 100 ml on samples in the dozens.
The useful thing this arithmetic exposes is not that big bottles are cheaper - everyone knows that - but by how much, and where it stops being true. Parachute's own range breaks the rule, and the two onion oils below show what the small pack actually costs.

Parachute's 330 ml bottle beats both of its 600 ml packs
Parachute's plain coconut oil appears in this read in four pack sizes, and the per-100 ml rates do not fall in order of size. The 1 litre jar is Rs. 47.90 per 100 ml and the 330 ml bottle is Rs. 51.52 - but the 600 ml bottle is Rs. 53.33 and the 600 ml 'Easy Jar' is Rs. 59.83.
So the 330 ml bottle is cheaper per 100 ml than either 600 ml pack, and the Easy Jar - the same oil in a wide-mouth container - costs 25 per cent more per 100 ml than the litre jar and 16 per cent more than the 330 ml bottle. If you were trading up from 330 ml to 600 ml expecting a bulk saving, you would be paying more per millilitre for the privilege.
All four are well rated - 43,649, 32,556, 16,672 and 2,304 ratings respectively - so this is not a case of the cheap listing being the unevidenced one. It is simply that pack pricing on a single product line is not monotonic, and nothing on the search page shows you the rate.

The same oil in a small bottle costs up to 1.64 times as much
Four products in this read appear in two pack sizes each, and the penalty for buying small is consistent and large. Mamaearth's Onion Hair Oil is Rs. 198.67 per 100 ml in its 150 ml bottle and Rs. 326.00 per 100 ml in its 50 ml bottle - the same named product, 1.64 times the rate.
Parachute Advansed's onion oil is Rs. 53.00 per 100 ml at 300 ml and Rs. 69.00 at 100 ml, a 30 per cent premium. Max Care's virgin coconut oil is Rs. 90.80 at 500 ml and Rs. 108.40 at 250 ml. Patanjali's, unusually, barely moves: Rs. 53.00 at 500 ml against Rs. 55.00 at 200 ml.
One detail worth knowing about the Parachute pair: both the 300 ml and the 100 ml listing carry the identical 11,251 ratings. Amazon pools customer feedback across the pack sizes of one product, so that number describes the product rather than the bottle - which means the cheaper-per-millilitre listing carries exactly the same evidence as the dearer one. Mamaearth's two bottles do not share a pool: 39,340 against 170.

₹ The rule that falls out of this page. Before you buy any hair oil, divide the price by the millilitres on the bottle. On this shelf that one calculation separates Rs. 25.80 per 100 ml from Rs. 396.00 for a liquid you use a spoonful of at a time - and it is the only way to see that Parachute's 600 ml jar costs more per millilitre than its 330 ml bottle, or that Mamaearth's 50 ml costs 1.64 times its own 150 ml.
Why there are no discount percentages anywhere on this page
Every other price page we publish prints the stated MRP and the discount badge beside the selling price. This one does not, and the reason is worth stating plainly: on this particular shelf, the figure Amazon's listing data returns in the maximum-retail-price position is frequently not an MRP at all - it is the per-unit rate Amazon prints on the tile.
The tell is arithmetic. A Rs. 129 bottle returned '25' in that field, which is its own per-100 ml rate rounded down. A Rs. 220 bottle returned '880', which is its per-100 ml rate times ten. A Rs. 220 bottle cannot have a maximum retail price of Rs. 880 and a Rs. 129 bottle certainly cannot have one of Rs. 25.
Rather than print numbers we cannot stand behind, we have left the MRP column and every discount percentage off this page entirely. Everything here is the selling price on the day, the volume the listing states, the rate we calculated from those two, and the rating the listing publishes. The full shelf, cheapest rate first
Thirty-seven listings, ordered by what 100 ml costs. Two patterns are worth noticing as you read down it. First, the cheap half is almost entirely coconut and amla oils from mass-market brands - Parachute, Hair & Care, Dabur Vatika, Patanjali, KLF Nirmal - and almost all of them carry four- and five-figure rating counts.
Second, the expensive half is almost entirely onion and rosemary oils in 100 ml and 200 ml bottles, and the samples thin out sharply: a Baidyanath red onion oil at Rs. 163.50 per 100 ml has three ratings, a Zandu at Rs. 184.50 has fifteen, an Auravedic at Rs. 396.00 has six. The exception is Mamaearth's 150 ml with 39,340.
These are different formulations doing different things and we are not suggesting a Rs. 396-per-100 ml onion oil should cost what a coconut oil costs. Nothing here was opened, applied to anybody's scalp or tested, and no claim about hair growth, hair fall or anything else is made or endorsed - those words are the listings' own.

What the arithmetic actually recommends
For plain coconut oil, Parachute's 1 litre pet jar at Rs. 479 - Rs. 47.90 per 100 ml, with 4.4 from 43,649 ratings, the cheapest coconut rate in the read with a large sample. If a litre is more than you want to store, the 330 ml bottle at Rs. 170 (Rs. 51.52) beats both 600 ml packs, which is the single most counter-intuitive thing on this page.
For the cheapest hair oil of any kind, Hair & Care's 500 ml at Rs. 129 - Rs. 25.80 per 100 ml, 4.1 from 8,904 ratings - or Parachute Advansed Amla Rosemary 500 ml at Rs. 137 (Rs. 27.40) if you want the larger sample, at 46,971. Both are less than a third of the shelf median.
What we would not do is buy the 50 ml bottle of anything. Mamaearth's 50 ml onion oil is Rs. 326.00 per 100 ml against Rs. 198.67 for its own 150 ml, and carries 170 ratings against 39,340. If you want to try a formulation before committing, that is a fair reason to pay the premium - just know it is 64 per cent, and that the small bottle's rating pool may be a fraction of the big one's.
