Yamaha has slowly and silently entered into the 125 cc bike segment that very few people would notice. Unlike brands like Honda or Bajaj, this Japanese bike manufacturer is quite successful with its sportbikes. Now, put some effort, Yamaha brought the Saluto in the Indian market. There are two Saluto bikes on offer. One is the Saluto RX 110 and the other is Saluto 125. We shall be discussing Saluto 125 here and the Saluto RX has been reviewed separately. Priced at INR 59,880, the Yamaha Saluto rivals against some best-selling commuter bikes like Honda SP 125, Hero Glamour, and Bajaj Pulsar 125.

Pros

  • Smooth  125 cc engine

  • Good riding position

  • Good mileage

Cons

  • Engine refinement could have been better

  • Basic instrument cluster

What’s at the heart of Yamaha Saluto?

What are the performance characteristics?

The engine is based on the Blue Core FZ unit with a long stroke configuration for more low down torque. The 125cc, single-cylinder, air-cooled engine produces 8.3PS at 7,000rpm and 10.1Nm at 4,500rpm. These figures are just normal for a 125 cc bike as the Bajaj Pulsar 125 returns 12 PS, Honda Shine delivers 10.8 PS, and Hero Glamour returns 11.5 PS. However, the engine comes mated with a four-speed gearbox along with an efficient carburettor that makes it deliver an ARAI rated mileage of 78 kmpl.

How gracefully does Yamaha Saluto 125  accelerate from 0-60?

The Saluto managed the 0-60 sprint in 9.4s and went on to a top speed of 86.7kmph. Taking its mileage into consideration, the Saluto is meant to offer best mileage with a compromised power output. The four-speed transmission does its job pretty well in offering good pickup while riding across the congested city.

How sure-footed are the brakes?

The Saluto gets disc in the front and drum brakes on rear wheel, which surprisingly isn’t quite up to the mark. Though the disc-drum setup might look decent considering the limitations of the Saluto’s performance. In order to get the best braking response, you need to apply both brakes simultaneously while travelling at high speed or wet conditions.

Can the Yamaha Saluto 125  get any more comfortable?

The Yamaha Saluto offers a typical commuter-ish forward set arrangement for the footpegs and raised handlebars, which makes the riding posture comfortable. This tall handlebar and sharp geometry make it easy for Saluto riders to get through the city traffic. The Saluto feels very predictable and is easy to move around corners, though it does feel laggy at times due to the lack of instant power.

What makes this Yamaha Saluto 125 stand out in the crowd?

This 125cc Yamaha Saluto looks pleasant and attractive from every corner. The newly designed bike comes with a new front cowl with windscreen, new muscular sculpted fuel tank with graphics boldly embarked with the ‘125cc’ logo. Even the side panel looks good with Yamaha and Saluto brandings.

The Saluto 125 isn’t a head-turner bike but makes itself distinguished from the rivals. Yamaha has been marketing this bike as a ‘practical family commuter bike’ since its introduction in the market and to be honest, this is quite fair as the Japanese auto major has focused on styling, mileage and practicality that makes it an easy commuter motorcycle.

Paint quality is good altogether, and overall build quality is appreciated. This is where Yamaha scores a good remark. The fit and finish of the bike with attractive graphics are amazing. However, the design on the instrument panel could have been executed in a better way. Comparatively, the instrument panel fails to impress us.

How does the Competition add up against this Yamaha Saluto 125?

Yamaha Saluto 125 VS Honda SP 125

The claimed mileage for the Honda SP 125 is 60 kmpl whereas the claimed mileage for Yamaha Saluto is 78 kmpl. Honda SP 125 is BS6 compliant and much more upgraded than the outdated Yamaha Saluto. This way, Yamaha needs to gear up with the Saluto in order to survive in this market.

Yamaha Saluto 125 VS Bajaj Pulsar 125

Final Verdict

Yamaha Saluto seems perfect for someone who needs a sharp-looking 125cc motorcycle, with handsome mileage. Though the engine could be more refined, Yamaha has certainly achieved in developing good products for the attracting mass market.
