The first-generation model being revealed in 2014, this car came a long way for an ultimate facelift. The Volvo XC90 marks a new era for the Swedish manufacturer's design philosophy. Having loaded with major updates, the  2020 Volvo XC90 offers a minimalistic, elegant interior that exemplifies the Swedish design ethos. It's a new approach that distinguishes XC90 from the three-row SUV counterparts.

2020 Volvo XC90 Exterior design

The XC90 is exclusively powered by a turbocharged four-cylinder engine while some of its rivals feature thirsty V6 and V8 engines. There are three versions for 2020 XC90: Momentum, Inscription, and Excellence. The 2.0-litre engine manages to propel 235 hp along with a peak torque of 450 Nm. In the Indian market, the Volvo XC90 SUV rivals against some popular luxury SUVs like Audi Q7, Mercedes-Benz GLE, and BMW X5.

2020 Volvo XC90 Engine and Performance

Volvo XC90 engine comprises of a 2.0-litre diesel engine that churns out 235 hp and 480 Nm. Transmission duties are carried out by an 8-speed automatic gearbox. Though Volvo has lost its diesel engine in the Volvo X40 model while making the transition to BS6, the XC90 along with models like S90, V90, and XC60 have successfully retained its diesel engine.

Comparatively, the XC90 engine feels underpowered compared to the rivals. You don't expect the 2.0-liter engine to push harder on rough surfaces. However, the carmaker has ensured that the transmission gets smooth with the increase of speed.

How well does the XC90 accelerate?

The SUV has shown some good acceleration figures despite its size. The XC90 can sprint to 60 MPG in 7.5 seconds. However, other competitors are way faster in this segment. The BMW X5 turns out to be the fastest with zero to 60 mph in 5.3 seconds.

How is the ride and handling?

It is very quick off the mark for a diesel motor and smoothens out as the revs rise. Volvo seems to have got the twin-turbo combination perfect to deliver the power without any hassle. While a 2.0-litre diesel motor might seem underpowered for a vehicle of this size, it is one of the most impressive four-cylinder diesel engines to drive. It also manages to accelerate in a linear way, as the gearbox transmits power smoothly, but again the pedal needs a hard press for punch.

The Volvo CX90, with help of its air suspension, also rides decently. There is a nice level of suppleness as you get up to speed. While some of this firmness might be because of the 20-inch wheels, the suspension, in particular, feels a bit tight-kneed. The handling is quite safe and composed, body control is good in Dynamic drive mode and there is less distraction from a vehicle of this big size.

How smooth is the braking on Volvo XC90?

2020 Volvo XC90 Wheel

All the four wheels of Volvo XC90 come with steel disc brakes. The brake pedal is soft and inspires confidence while driving. The SUV offers a braking distance of 113 feet (halt from 60 mph). Also, the 2020 XC90 comes standard with automatic emergency braking.

How much fuel-efficient is this Volvo's engine?

Those folks at Volvo definitely were quite serious about fuel efficiency when they decided to install a small four-cylinder into the large XC90. The XC90 is just marginally more efficient than the competitor even in most efficient guise. That's a real disappointment considering that XC90 also has compromised performance and engine refinement compared to the rivals.

2020 Volvo XC90 Seating

The XC90's interior offers amazing space and features. Right from the attractive options to the material quality, we only wish that there were more cars of this kind. The third row doesn't offer much space. However, it manages to offer more legroom than some of its prominent rivals. Available as an option, the XC90 has either two or four massaging seats on offer, a rear-seat beverage cooler, a crystalline shifter knob, and handcrafted Swedish-crystal tumblers.

How does the XC90 stack up against rivals?

Volvo XC90 vs Audi Q7

2020 Audi Q7

The Audi Q7 is one of the most well-crafted luxury SUVs in its segment. It offers a better convenient package along with ample interior space. It's also one of the fastest in the segment with a supercharged V6 engine that's certainly more accomplished compared to the XC90`s small 2.0-liter Inline-4.

Volvo XC90 Vs Mercedes-Benz GLE

2020 Mercedes-Benz GLE Side profile

The Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class can be loved by most of the luxury-SUV buyers out there. The 2020 Volvo XC90 is a good effort from the Swedish brand, offering style, luxury, and practicality in a manner like most SUVs in the segment don’t. The GLE is seen as a replacement of the M-Class in Mercedes' lineup. There are several other updates despite the name change, including revised styling, an updated infotainment system, and a plug-in hybrid variant. The XC90 and the GLE are both technologically advanced new models right now in the market. Just that the Volvo is richer in terms of standard safety equipment.

Is the 2020 Volvo XC90 BS6 worth buying?

We feel bad for Volvo not to bring the XC90 as one of the sportiest SUVs or noise-free.  The XC90, however, promises to offer a decent power supply despite being fitted with a 2.0-litre engine. As far as the ride quality and practicality are concerned, the 2020 Volvo XC90 SUV is far batter than most of the luxury SUVs in the market right now.  Though, looking at all the spec charts, we are happy to find the XC90 an all-round beautifully designed luxury SUV packed with lots of modern features.
