Pledging to a cleaner future, Volvo India has successfully upgraded its entire lineup to comply with BS6 norms. For 2020, Volvo XC40 is available in a single petrol variant. Until last year, the XC40 was available in three variants which included two diesel options. But the Swedish automaker is now moving towards a petrol-only line-up.

2020 volvo xc40 side view

Apparently, the demand for diesel-powered vehicles is always in high demand in India including the luxury car segment. Surprisingly, Volvo XC 90’s entire lineup has always been run on diesel and we believe that the company would scrap that too. 2020 Volvo XC40 T4 still looks sharp and young and goes against some prominent rivals like BMW X1, Mercedes-Benz GLS Class, and Audi Q3. Priced at Rs. 39.90 Lakh, the XC40 T4 will surely give its competitors a hard time with its modern set of brim filled features and impressive reliability.

Volvos have always been known for their robust build quality and emphasis on safety. The XC40 is no different and puts for a very impressive bundle of safety features on the table as well. Volvo also offers the XC40 with accessories that focuses on creature comfort and safety. These features can also be had in packages that include Interior protection package, Interior load package and Exterior Load package.

Your variant of choice?

Since XC40 T4 is available in a single fully-fledged petrol variant and Volvo has made sure to bundle all of the best features in their portfolio into this. The engine is quite refined than its predecessor and offers peppy performance. But we won't deny the fact that we do miss the torquey diesel motor.

2020 Volvo XC40 April Offers

There are no exclusive offers available for premium cars like the Volvo XC40 but the brand has taken steps to provide its Indian fanbase with an interesting proposition.

The easy-going process includes the follows:

  • Finance up to 100% of Ex-Showroom price
  • Finance on insurance
  • Loan tenure up to 7 years
  • Zero foreclosure
  • Ballon finance
  • Step-up finance
  • Coverage for extended warranty, service package and insurance

How peppy is the tuned petrol motor in the XC40?

Previously, Volvo XC40 was launched with diesel powertrain and later on the company decided to bring in the petrol variant named as XC40 T4 R-Design. For 2020, the petrol engine has been carried forward and is a 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine that churns out 187bhp and 300Nm of torque. The power figure is similar to its now-scrapped diesel engine, but torque is down, by 100Nm which is a bummer. The petrol motor has a linear power graph and isn't as exciting to drive as its preceding diesel powerhouse.

The top end is dead and the turbo kicks in at 2500 RPM which has a surge but not the seat hugging type. You get four driving modes, namely Eco, Comfort, Dynamic and Off-Road but the change in dynamics are not that drastic. For instance, the Off-Road mode lightens steering input and switches off auto start-stop functionality. Hill descent mode is kept on to assist in a steep trail.

An 8-Speed automatic transmission takes care of power transmission to the front wheels but even with the actuation of paddle shifters, the drive still lacks conviction. But that is not the case with its competitors, like in the case of BMW X1 which has a very involving powertrain setup and is the most fun to drive of this lot.

How quick is the Volvo XC40 from 0-100?

Start the Volvo XC40 T4 and the first impression is very much different than the petrol-powered BMW X1. The power delivery is linear but it fails to deliver the punch even with its turbo kicking in at 2000 RPM. The 8-Speed gearbox is a major culprit here as its sluggish nature detaches you from the thrill which was earlier available in the XC40's previous iterations.

Undoubtedly, the engine is refined and silent too. At higher revs, the cabin gets a bit noisy but doesn’t feel unpleasant. Moreover, the XC40 comes with paddle shifters, allowing you to shift as per your convenience minus the thrill!

But it still manages to undercut Audi Q3 in the sprint run as its almost a second quicker. But Bimmer and Merc much quicker in comparison and it is mostly due to either added performance or lower kerb weight or is some cases, both.

How nimble is the handling of 2020 XC40 in terms of an SUV?

When it comes to ride and handling, Volvo never fails to amaze us. The company has set high standards in providing with an involving driving experience. The high-speed stability is impressive and the chassis has been well-modulated to minimize body roll. With the XC40 T4, we have front-wheel drive, making understeer a natural trait.

2020 volvo xc40 handling

The suspension setup is tuned to comply with high-speed runs and so city drives ought to get a bit bumpy. Front-wheel setup has helped it lose some weight but that doesn't bring about a major change in agility. It is a mixed bag but the occupants are well insulated from all this fuss.

How bitey are the brakes in this Volvo?

The braking setup on Volvo XC40 T4 is great and feels lively. The progression is linear and newbies would adapt to it without a hiccup. Its shorter wheelbase helps improve braking performance and maintain brake pressure. The brake pedal has a mild play which is helpful and provides for control even in desperate situations.

The ABS unit works flawlessly and its intervention is natural which helps you to be prepared in case. Volvo also has a number of brake assisted safety features which works in conjunction with various sensors and cameras to avoid situations in cities and the harmony of all these systems working together is seamless.

Kerb weight plays an important role in braking performance and that is the reason for Volvo opting for a 2-wheel drive transmission instead of an all-wheel-drive setup. But it still falls short and ends up at the end of this list. Audi Q3 is the most effective one here as it weighs in the least and so braking is well optimized.

How fuel-efficient is the petrol motor in XC40?

The Volvo XC40 T4 R-Design offer 18 kmpl of mileage as per ARAI. With a fuel tank capacity of 54 litres, it can double up as a decent touring machine. The petrol motor that has a linear performance curve coupled to a tamed 8-Speed automatic transmission makes sure to give you an efficient ride.

The driving modes, further help in fine-tuned and mapping the SUV to suit better for driving conditions which helps you extract more kilometres off the juice. Start-Stop system also comes in hand during city traffics to help conserve fuel.

The handicap in performance has helped XC40 score well in this mileage war and along with a decently sized fuel tank, it sure can outrun the rest in a cross-country face-off except for the Audi Q3 which has a humongous 64 litres it will surely go a long way.

How head-turning does the 2020 XC40 look?

Volvo’s designers have always amazed us with their stunning and minimally appealing design language. When it was first launched, the XC40 set new benchmarks in terms of elegance and luxury. And later, it was followed by equally remarkable products – the S90 and the XC60.

2020 volvo xc40 dapper looks

The XC40 looks modern and young even after having the same base template for so many years. The automaker has left very few room for improvement in this masterpiece of an SUV. It is tightly packed, sporty and has a compact form factor. Wearing Volvo's traditional fascia, the XC40 has a familiar yet distinctive look and the "thor hammer" headlights look insanely cool and will never go unnoticed on roads.

There is no such change on the exterior except the T4 badge. There are some chrome bits on the grille and exhaust tips at the rear. The SUV flaunts 18-inch alloys which look dapper and dual-tone black treatment to the roof adds to its sportiness.

Exterior Features

Some of the notable exterior features are:

  • Glossy black integrated roof rails
  • R-Design grille
  • Glossy black decor side windows
  • Glossy black rearview mirror covers
  • Retractable rearview mirrors
  • LED headlights bending
  • Foglights in front
  • EBL, Flashing Brake Light and Hazard Warning
  • C-Pillar R-Design Moulding
  • Glossy black skid plates, Front & Rear

How well flourished is the cabin of 2020 Volvo XC40?

The car offers some cool concave surfaces which are finished with 'Aluminium Cutting Edge Inlays' - part of the R-Design trim. The steering wheel feels premium with R-Design badging and the gear shifter is wrapped in leather and has thick white stitching. The seats are sporty too with similar premium stitching. Black treatment on the dashboard oomphs up the premium appeal of the car and keeps you cocooned in its luxury.

All the buttons and knobs are made of high-quality materials and have a good feel to them. Soft-touch materials have been used in the upper half of the dashboard, which makes it feel premium. However, we would have loved to see more storage pockets in that form of cubby holes.

The front seats are comfortable and well-designed, but the rear is a bit too upright. T4’s interior comes draped in black, making the cabin look a bit dull and diminishes a sense of space but at the same time uplifts its premium quotient. Its competitors have a better second-row seating department but loses out on the quality of materials used and the on the count of features on offer.

How well-stacked is the infotainment system in XC40?

The new XC40 is feature-loaded with a panoramic sunroof, 12.3-inch instrument cluster and a 9-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity. It also offers wireless charging for smartphones.

The unit is very intuitive unlike other touchscreen units in this range. The menu is well laid out and any required data is just a few clicks away. Brightness is strong and it doesn't fade away even in the harshest of sunlight. The advantage of a single touch screen unit is the minimalistic look of the dashboard which otherwise would have been clustered with buttons and dials.

Interior Features

  • R-Design leather seats
  • Fixed rear headrests
  • Adjustable middle headrest
  • Cutting edge aluminium decor inlays
  • R-Design leather steering wheel
  • Illuminated vanity mirror in sun visors, both sides
  • Pedal R-Design
  • Front tread plates, metal R-Design
  • Interior illumination high level
  • Parking ticket holder
  • Storage box under driver seat
  • Glove box curry hook
  • Waste bin with net in front of Armrest

How much cargo can this compact Volvo carry?

The XC40's boot is also spacious enough, and the rear seats can be folded down in a 40:60 ratio to give you more cargo space - yes enough for luggage, shopping, and even the occasional weekend escapes. The tailgate is electrically operated and can also be opened or closed by swinging your foot under the rear bumper.

The floorboard is smartly laid out and even can house a few small cargo under it where it stores the spare tyre and emergency toolkit. Extra hooks are also provided to hang cargo if needed and a cargo light shines on bright in the darkness with conviction!

The compact form factor did steal a bit of practicality, off the XC40 but it isn't far off from its competition in which bimmer has the largest cargo space. Audi shares the same wavelength whereas Merc falls short.

How impressive is the safety pack in 2020 XC40?

Volvo XC40 T4 boasts of radar-based Active Safety features like City Safety with Steering Assist. This system helps in avoiding front collisions up to speeds of 50kmph. It also has Adaptive Cruise Control System, which helps in maintaining a safe distance while following a vehicle.

2020 Volvo XC40 Competition Check

Volvo XC40 vs BMW X1

volvo xc40 vs bmw x1

Both SUVs offer a touchscreen infotainment unit as standard. However, Volvo XC40 gets a bigger 9-inch unit when compared to the 6.5-inch unit on the BMW  X1. Even the connectivity options remain similar including voice command, navigation, USB and Bluetooth integration.  On the XC40, you get a storage space underneath the driver’s seat, a foldable hatch on the boot floor with hooks for your groceries.

Comparatively, the BMW is sportier of the two as it gets launch control with paddle shifters. Apart from that, it also comes with fog lamps, run-flat tyres, cornering brake control, traction control, auto start/stop, brake energy regeneration, and BMW’s attention assist.

Volvo XC40 vs Mercedes-Benz GLA Class

Mercedes-Benz GLA brings the most compact SUVish appeal and while it looks great in an urban setting, we do think the shape might not age very well. We liked the brushed aluminium finish touches on both these SUVs, especially in the grille and skid plate elements. The GLA Class has a good differentiating factor compared to Volvo XC40. The luxury offering in the GLA class is much more premium than what Volvo offers. Both cars are priced at a minor price difference.

Can the XC40 pump out the same magic with its petrol-only heart?

Priced at Rs 39.9 lakh, the XC40 T4  has become one of the pricier SUVs in the market, all thanks to the BS6 transition. With a single fully-loaded R-Design trim, you do get a lot of car for the money. The design is a head-turner and you get an array of features. So if you are looking for petrol-powered compact luxury SUVs, the XC40 T4 is an option worth considering and the outcome would be worth it.
