The TVS Apache RR310 is the fruit of a very ambitious collaboration between BMW Motorrad and TVS. It is an exceptional machine but was let down due to certain unavoidable mechanical flaws which took away from the thrill and enjoyment of this motorcycle.

But TVS has done its homework and is now back with a majorly updated product. The sheer amount of changes tells of the amount of work done on this promising motorcycle. The BS6 compliant TVS Apache RR310 is now priced at Rs. 2.40 lakhs, Ex-showroom pan India and brings a lot of upgrades and rectifications on the table. Yes, the price bump is steep at Rs. 15,000 and so we will have to dig deep to find out about its justification. Does the RR310 finally have what it takes to take on the likes of KTM RC390 and Kawasaki Ninja 300, both of which have managed to leave a mark in every motorist’s heart?

What is the source of flexible power in 2020 TVS Apache RR310?

How evolving is performance and efficiency?

The 312.2cc pot is a promising unit but was not able to work its magic, in its first generation state. That has drastically changed in this generation and the motor is now much smoother and refinement has gone up by a huge margin. TVS has worked on the cooling system which now provides better heat management and thus more efficient performance.

The most impressive addition is that of riding modes, Yes! Riding modes, and this is the smallest displacement motorcycle to flaunt these modes. It takes the riding experience to a whole different dimension which makes things much more fun and involving. Power and torque figures also vary with the change in modes. Urban and Rain modes cut down on the performance to aid in better efficiency and safety. Track and Sport unlocks all of its potential, and voila! you get a very flexible and broad-minded motorcycle.

Efficiency has also improved drastically, due to the introduction of these riding modes. The sober ones, namely Urban and Rain help shave off on your fuel expenses with its toned-down attitude. ARAI has given the RR310 an average output of 31 kmpl taking all of the riding modes into account. This is impressive given the state of tune, this particular engine runs in. You won’t feel guilty, twisting the throttle out as you can always rely on these riding modes to have fun.

TVS is by far the most heavily updated “BS6” iteration of this lot. KTM has done their bit too, but there weren't many changes needed for the already perfect offering. Kawasaki Ninja 300 has been left unattended too for a pretty long time now and we feel sad for such a beautiful and once-promising machine. The competition has created this wide gap with that of Ninja 300, that it has now become non-existent.

How flexible is the acceleration in RR310; 0-100?

Acceleration has improved, thanks to the all-new Ride-by-wire technology, which is TVS’s first-ever time of application. And the outcome is pretty impressive, as even the slightest input on the throttle will instantly change the pace of the motorcycle. The riding modes make it immersive with the change in throttle response, varying from crisp and abrupt to linear and smooth. So, you can have the “slap on the face” acceleration on the racetracks and “ Eco-mode” acceleration on the roads.

The biggest change is that you won’t feel any vibrations at the higher RPMs which can help you enjoy it to the fullest. This was what plagued this beautiful offering in its preceding iteration. We are overwhelmed with the changes TVS made to eliminate this and thus make it a much-improved bike.

Despite the gain in weight, TVS has made changes to not alter the performance outputs and thus top speed and acceleration stays put. The 6-Speed gearbox is slick and slipper clutch helps you have uninterrupted fun on the RR310. KTM RC390 is the most aggressive one of this lot but RR310 provides us with a flexible personality which makes it much more livable with.

How sharp and involving are the brakes?

TVS did not leave out braking from its list of upgrades and it has changed completely. We are not sure as to what wizardry the automaker has done, but you tend to get a heightened level of confidence with the impressive bite on offer.

2020 tvs apache rr310 petal disc brakes

The brake levers are well-modulated and you will get used to it quickly. The bite is gradual and so you will not feel the jitters. Dual-channel ABS also works its magic on the shark and helps you tread the line, even in aggressive riding conditions.

The petal discs help in better heat dissipation and thus help you extract the most of the braking even after a few rounds on the track. This is also well-suited for Indian weather conditions. KTM has an advantage here with a lower kerb weight which helps the brakes have better control on the kerb. Ninja used to have impressive braking back in the day, but Single-Channel ABS is now relative to dinosaurs and commuter motorcycles.

How much has the handling and comfort evolved in this BS6 compliant RR310?

You will love how this bike has evolved and the best way to experience that is from the way it handles. The new Michelin Pilot Street 5 tyres make a difference between hell and heaven. Grip levels are phenomenal and you will have a wide grin while taking those corners. KYB sourced upside-down front forks and rear mono-shock complements the geometry of this motorcycle and thus makes it a very flickable machine.

TVS went on with a different strategy here with the RR310. Instead of making it an all-out performance machine, they went with a flexible character. This is visible from the not so aggressive riding posture that dare we say can make a rider tour on it. The suspension setup is on the stiffer side, but is manageable and won’t pose a problem for daily drivability.

2020 tvs apache rr310 comfort

Rider comfort is impressive as the seat is flat and wide. It is feasible for long saddle hours and an air seat will make it touring-friendly. The rider’s triangle is well preserved and you can change between full-on aggression to relaxed upright.

Riding dynamics is what makes it stand out from the competition. KTM has an all-in or nothing attitude which makes it a tough daily ride. Ninja 300 has a similar character as the RR310 but unfortunately is too old! In a market, where every 6 months see an update, the Ninja 300 is a granddaddy, despite being an incredible machine.

How intense does the RR310 look?

TVS has taken a lot of inspiration from a shark for the RR310. It can be seen clearly from its sharp flowing lines and fin-like cut-outs all over. It, in short, is a “savage” looking motorcycle. It is unlike any other motorcycle in this segment. The dual projector headlights have ample throw and look downright intense.

2020 tvs apache rr310 "shark" looks

The tank is high and shaped steeply. It aligns with the pillion seat height and the rider sits, cocooned in between these. The upswept exhaust unit, despite being huge, blends in well with the overall shape of the motorcycle. The new “Titanium black” shade highlights its red trellis frame which gives it a contrasting look.

TVS Apache RR310 is not a small bike, but clever engineering and electronics helps it feel and behave like one. KTM RC390 looks all the more aggressive but doesn’t strike the fine balanced chord like the “Shark”. Ninja 300 has a design that ages like fine wine and is a looker even now.

What are the safety and class-leading features available on the RR310?

TVS has worked a lot on safety and assist features and that makes all of the difference in the al new BS6 compliant RR310. Dual-channel ABS unit helps the rider to have control of the ride, in any given intense situation. The LED lighting helps to make your presence felt from afar and thus assist in safety.

TVS has included “Smart Xonnet” in the RR310 that helps it evolve into a completely different machine. It helps the rider to seamlessly connect smartphone to the TFT display and thus indulge in a connected experience. The TVS specific Glide through Plus technology helps you move the vehicle without stalling it and this can be done till a speed of 38 kmph and 3rd gear. This will drastically help in tight traffic situations.

TVS has an edge here with its list of advanced features which makes riding easy and involving. KTM has not incorporated its TFT display into RC390 and so is shy of giving you the immersive experience as the RR310. And for the Kawasaki Ninja 300, it's just plain outdated and still flaunts a semi-digital instrument cluster.

How does the competition stack up against this shark?

TVS Apache RR310 vs KTM RC390

2020 ktm rc390

KTM has been colouring India in orange for over a decade now. The RC390 is the cheapest fully-faired motorcycle on offer that crosses the 40 bhp mark. It is the cheapest haven for budding racers to bloom and also have the most intense adrenaline rush. But therein lies the problem, it is coded to perform on the track, but not on the streets. This is where the RR310 triumphs over the perfectionist. It provides a flexible riding experience with the riding modes and changing dynamics. If you want a practical racing machine, the new RR310 it is, but if all-out aggression is your comfort zone, hands down the RC390!

TVS Apache RR310 vs Kawasaki Ninja 300

2020 kawasaki ninja 300

Kawasaki Ninja 300 was once considered the unbeatable as it was the only entry-level twin-cylinder offering in India that produced close to 40 bhp. Being a CKD unit, it was also not possessed by many due to the insane pricing. But times have changed and we now have a lot of bikes that provide cheap thrills and also cross the 40 bhp mark. The Ninja is outdated and needs a serious overhaul to cope up with the modern bunch of competitors. We choose the Apache RR310 over the Ninja 300 for the value for money proposition and the mouth-watering list of features.

How does the 2020 Apache RR310 justify its hike?

TVS has learnt a lot from its mistakes and the 2020 Apache RR310 is its answer. They have extensively worked on the motorcycle to eliminate all of the flaws that held down such a beautiful machine. This is promising from an automaker who wants to go all-in to provide its customer with a desirable machine. The steep premium of Rs. 15,000 tends to make sense when you screen through the amount of work that has gone in the already intense offering.

2020 tvs apache rr310 bi-led heallights

It is just Rs. 8000 short of KTM RC390 and thus puts a very big question mark. But it all boils down to your budget and what you want out of your machine. If a flexible dual-purpose motorcycle is what you need, something to go flat out on the track and ride casually back home, then the “shark” is the one for you. But if all-out peak adrenaline is your fetish, then an extra Rs, 8000 will make you very very happy.
