The premium hatchback market is arguably the hottest segment in the country as of now and one such car is the Maruti Suzuki Baleno. It is easy to see the appeal of such hatchbacks in India since these offer premium features, great interiors, peppy engines, great fuel efficiency and easy manoeuvrability in a country that could do with wider roads.

The Maruti Suzuki Baleno is very likely the king of this segment since it manages to overthrow all of its rivals by a significant margin. On the other hand, the Hyundai Elite i20 on its own is a very potent machine and falls right behind the Baleno in terms of sales numbers. Both the cars offer similar performance on paper, however, Maruti Baleno is almost 2 seconds quicker than the i20 in the 0-100 KMPH run. Where Baleno is powered by a 1.2-litre 4-cylinder VVT engine, the Hyundai i20 comes with the 1.2-litre Kappa engine mated to a 5-speed manual gearstick and with an option of a CVT transmission. Both these cars are priced quite aggressively with the Maruti Baleno being Rs. 10K costlier than the Hyundai i20 at Rs. 5.63 lakhs for the base variant.

The Baleno clearly is the pick of the masses, but is the Baleno a better vehicle than the Elite i20 or is it just the Maruti brand image that blindsides most consumers? Let’s find out!

Maruti Suzuki Baleno and Hyundai Elite i20: Design Comparison

Looks are an extremely subjective matter and opinions certainly vary from person to person. The Maruti Suzuki Baleno is one of the prettier offerings from the Maruti stable of vehicles and was the first Maruti badged vehicle to feature LED Taillamps. The Baleno has smooth flowy lines and a wide and taut stance that make it look pretty impressive. It has a bulky structure that makes it stand out of the crowd.

The recently refreshed Hyundai Elite i20 features a new rear end and front fascia that makes it even more aggressive. The Elite i20 manages to look much more purposeful than the Baleno and in our personal opinion, the Hyundai manages to blow the mighty Suzuki out of the water when it comes to exterior design.

Paying attention to the dimensions, it is clear the Baleno is the bigger vehicle out of the two since it is longer, wider and taller than the Elite i20 but somehow the Hyundai is stanced to appear wider than the Baleno. The Suzuki Baleno tends to look a little too jacked up in our opinion even though the difference in ground clearance is a mere 3mm. The longer and wider proportions of the Baleno help provide it with a spacious cabin and offers loads of room in the rear seats in contrast to the Elite i20.

Maruti Suzuki Baleno vs Hyundai Elite i20: Interior Comparison

Stepping inside the cabin of the Baleno, it is very noticeable that the car offers one of the best looking interiors amongst many other Maruti vehicles. Since the Baleno is positioned to be a NEXA offering, it does have an air of sophistication around the cabin that exudes the distinction of the sub-tier brand.

The infotainment unit on the Baleno is the familiar 7-inch Smart Play Studio unit that does the duty on most Maruti vehicles and has given us no reason to complain. The UI is easy to manoeuvre and the graphics are simple and crisp. The fact that the unit comes shod with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto does mean that there are next to no qualms with the entire system but if we had to nitpick we would have preferred a volume knob over the touch slider.

The interiors on the Elite i20 though are a different ball-game all together as they appear to be much richer when pitted against the likes of the Baleno. The fit and finish of the cabin are much better than what Maruti offers on the Baleno and the top-spec trim of the Elite i20 offers everything that is present in the Baleno and more. The infotainment system on the Hyundai although of an identical size feels much more sophisticated than the one on the Baleno and the Arkamys audio system also delivers a much better sound signature than the more generic sound stage on the Baleno.

The interior on the Hyundai i20 is miles better than that of the Maruti Suzuki Baleno and also offer a wider range of features that help aid the convenience and practicality of the cabin.

Maruti Suzuki Baleno vs Hyundai Elite i20: Key Features

Both the present vehicles have there own set of strengths and weaknesses but on a larger scale, it is without a doubt that the Elite i20 blows the Baleno out of the water when it comes to the level of features it has on offer. Just like how Maruti is synonymous with high fuel mileage and low maintenance, Hyundai has managed to make a name for itself by cramming as many features as possible into their offerings. When going with the Top Asta(O) variant of the Elite i20 one does get a smattering of extra features that make a very compelling case for it.

Maruti Suzuki Baleno gets the fare share of features from the base variant itself but the Elite i20 still offers a little more than the former. Baleno misses out on some features that the top-spec Alpha variant of the Hyundai i20 gets like the wireless charger, cooled glove box and even the rear AC vents. This adds up to the overall convenience of the Hyundai i20.

Which hatchback is the best between the two?

Both the Maruti Suzuki Baleno and the Hyundai Elite i20 have some extremely compelling reasons to choose one over the other. If you are looking for a no-nonsense hatchback that is going to offer you plenty of features, great mileage, decent ride comfort and has a low maintenance cost, then the Baleno is the vehicle for you. The Elite i20 though is for the more value-oriented buyers who want the most refinement and gadgetry for their cash. The Elite i20 is never going to be as cheap to run as the Baleno since it is less fuel-efficient than the Baleno and has relatively higher service costs but if we had to pick a vehicle for ourselves, we would definitely go for the more mature and VFM Hyundai to drive home.
