When Land Rover first introduced the Range Rover Evoque back in 2010, it impressed prospective buyers with its styling and compact dimensions. It is also the most  "out of the box" Land Rover as it looks nothing like its brothers and that bought in a lot of attention for this Brit. In 2017, Range Rover managed to bring more refinement in the design and powertrain setup of the sharp-looking Evoque.

Thanks to the local assembly, now the Land Rover is more affordable compared to the models brought as CBU. And guess what’s more, the 2020 Land Rover Range Rover Evoque gets a BSVI 2.0-litre Ingenium petrol and diesel engine. With the BS6-compliance, the Range Rover Evoque price in India has considerably increased by Rs.2.9 lakh for base models.

What will Impress You:

Which variant of 2020 Evoque should you go for?

We would recommend the S trim as it features most of the equipment as the R-Dynamic. The trim is priced at Rs. 54.94 Lakh, which is around Rs. 5 Lakh cheaper than the R-dynamic and it depends on one’s personal choice for opting petrol or diesel-powered version of Range Rover Evoque as performance and efficiency figures for both the powertrains are in close proximity.

What are the powertrain options available in the 2020 Evoque?

The Evoque is powered by a BSVI 2.0-litre Ingenium diesel engine that makes 177bhp and 430Nm of torque, and a BSVI 2.0-litre petrol engine that produces 245bhp and 365Nm of torque. It comes mated to ZF’s trusted 9-speed torque converter. Performance isn’t ground-breaking, but it is very refined under BS6 compliance.

The power delivery is a little underwhelming. Give it a little gas though, and the diesel motor starts making noise. But, interestingly, the exhaust note turns that noise into sportiness and the gearbox works smoothly in traffic and feels decisive. In manual mode, there’s a sense of urgency while upshifting, but the gearbox seems unresponsive during spirited driving.

The Brit is priciest of the lot, but that also comes with added performance advantage. It is heaps and bounds ahead of the rest and the closest one which comes to tango in performance is the Volvo XC40. The diesel powertrain variants, however, have a different story to tell with all of the competitors marching neck on neck.

How quick is the 2020 Range Rover Evoque from 0-100?

Acceleration is good in this Land Rover; it surges at a good pace which at times makes you deviate from the fact that you are behind the wheel of a full-sized SUV. The transmission works well and is crisp with precise shifts of the ZF transmission when you push the engine to its limit.

2020 Land Rover Range Rover Evoque acceleration 0-100

While the Evoque may not corner like a sports sedan, it certainly feels very planted while travelling at high speeds which is impressive for a tall and shroud SUV like the Evoque. The streamlined design language helps a bit in tackling drag but its kerb weight nullifies the advantage. But the brutal performance figures keep it on top of the pack.

It is impressive as of how Land Rover which weighs in at the most still has the quickest pace of this lot which is closely followed by the bimmer. This is due to its power to weight ratio which helps overcome its power crunch and thus is just marginally behind the Rover.

How intuitive are the driving dynamics of Range Rover Evoque?

The steering is light but manages to generate confidence in the driver. Even problematic roads are dealt with very well, with only big pothole bumps are felt. The Evoque’s ride quality goes firm at slow speeds, with a soft edge for good roads.

2020 Land Rover Range Rover Evoque terrain modes

Although this SUV rides ultra-flat once you rev up, you just can’t avoid road, tyre and suspension noise. There’s also a tendency for it to nose-dive under severe braking. The thing is, none of these attributes are deal-breakers.

How bitey are the brakes in 2020 Evoque?

The Range Rover Evoque performs best while braking. The car is good at cornering and stops precisely at high speed. The Evoque's braking is backed with several safety aids like Emergency brake assist and Cruise control that brings the car to stop even at heightened speeds.

2020 Land Rover Range Rover Evoque braking performance

The shorter wheelbase is also a boon as it helps the SUV to manage its weight between the wheels with much more composure and this instil a heightened level of driving confidence. Nosedives are well-controlled but not eliminated. Its kerb weight adds an extra toll on the brakes as there is more kgs to bring to halt.

Audi Q3 has an edge here, due to its strict diet. The lower kerb weight helps its braking system to function much more efficiently and with lesser resources as compared to its counterparts. Volvo makes optimum use of its braking system with the ventilated discs which deviates it from overheating.

How good is the fuel management in this Land Rover?

The 2.0-litre engine is quite fuel-efficient with the BS6 compliance. With a fuel tank capacity of 66.5 litres, the SUV returns a good travel range. It is impressive of Land Rover to balance out on its insane power and heavy nature to provide for a not so thirsty SUV.

2020 Land Rover Range Rover Evoque efficient automatic transmission

The secret to this outcome is a refined engine set up along with a precise and non-stressful transmission setup. The automatic transmission helps keep RPMs low and also provides with different driving modes to cater better in terms of engine performance and efficiency.

The large fuel tank gives it an impressive touring potential and limitation of top speed helps you better manage fuel and 195 kmph is more than efficient for Indian driving conditions. Audi is the least thirsty of this lot and it has to do with limited performance and lower kerb weight. The combo works wonders in the efficiency department.

How exquisite does the 2020 Range Rover Evoque look?

The new 2020 Evoque is pleasing to eyes from outside. It looks distinctively minimalistic and stylish, with visual influences from the Velar. For instance, it houses a new pair of super-slim LED headlamps that have been sourced directly from its bigger sibling’s parts bin, and also comes with double-layered LED taillamps and flush-door handles.

Undoubtedly, the new Range Rover Evoque looks great from any given angle and familiar to baby Velar. Up-front, you'll witness a rounded bumper with huge air-intake-like slats on either side, a mesh grille, flanked by slim headlamps with LED inserts within.

2020 Land Rover Range Rover Evoque dashboard

The chunky steering feels nice to grip and the instrument cluster is perfectly legible. The layout for the buttons and controls is tidily laid out and the dashboard appears simple yet modern. The gear-shift knob rises the moment you dab on the engine start-stop button. Also worth mentioning, is the great sound quality courtesy of the Meridian audio system. At the front, seats are well-bolstered and pampers you with luxury. But this falls short as the second row becomes cramped uncomfortable for passengers.

If there is be an aspect that the Evoque is unbeatable at, then that gotta be its insane cargo volume. Despite being a compact SUV, it oozes out a humongous area which the competition struggles to cope with. The closest trailer in the form of BMW X1 is still a healthy 281 litres less.

How does Land Rover Range Rover Evoque tackle its competition?

Land Rover Range Rover Evoque VS Volvo XC40

land rover range rover evoque vs volvo xc40

The XC40 has proved particularly adept at seeing off challengers with a package that isn’t the absolute best in every area but is strong enough in those that are highly sought after in this market – most notably practicality, ride comfort and safety. While the Evoque uses its mild-hybrid technology to improve responsiveness at low engine revs, its 2.0-litre diesel engine’s power deficit remains too much. And it’s not just the stopwatch that highlights this; attempt an overtake and you soon realise that it lacks the zip of the others. It’s perfectly adequate, though, and cruises happily on the motorway.

The Evoque is also much, much quieter than either of its rivals at motorway speeds. Yes, there’s a bit of wind flutter, but the comparative lack of road noise makes it the most peaceful. The XC40 is a little better for wind noise, but the loud tyre rumble you hear across any coarse surface spoils the cruising experience.

Land Rover Range Rover Evoque VS BMW X1

Land Rover Range Rover Evoque vs bmw x1

The original BMW X1 was an also a run-in the crossover market, but the new car shoots straight to the top of the class. combination of practicality, efficiency, performance and engaging driving dynamics means it’s a consummate all-rounder. It looks like a smaller version of the X3, yet from behind the wheel, it drives more like BMW’s saloon cars. It makes for a convincing package, and victory here.

Land Rover Range Rover Evoque vs Audi Q3

Land Rover Range Rover Evoque vs Audi Q3

Audi has managed to tap in Indian consumers into the luxury segment and the Q3 has been an incremental part of it. It is a compact SUV which has the punch and the ground clearance to impress any car buyer in India! Its network of service centres along with nationwide coverage makes it a strong contender for the much newer Land Rover. Very less mechanical complications also make it a better choice than the Evoque and also the matter that the Q3's second-row seating is spacious enough.

What's the final call on the Range Rover Evoque?

You could either look at the new Evoque as an expensive mid-size SUV or a cracker of a deal on a Velar if you don't need the extra space of a larger SUV. The fact that it's now better equipped, slightly more spacious than before and has safety features like the lane-keep assist sure will go a long way towards making it a better deal. One thing's for sure, you'll never regret your choice when you look back at it.
