Hostinger sells a .com for Rs. 1 in India. The same card says it renews at Rs. 1,499. We read all eight extensions priced on the page on 29 August 2026, first-year and renewal together.
Because the eight renewal multiples differ so widely, the cheapest domain on day one is often not the cheapest by year three — and one extension moves from third place to seventh.

A one-rupee .com renews at Rs. 1,499
Hostinger's India domain page prices eight extensions on 29 August 2026, and it prints both numbers that matter side by side: what the first year costs and what it renews at. That is more honest than most registrar pages manage, and it makes the shape of the offer easy to read.
A .com costs Rs. 1 for the first year and Rs. 1,499 a year afterwards. A .in is also Rs. 1 in year one and Rs. 899 after. Those are not discounts in any meaningful sense — they are acquisition prices, and the renewal is the price of actually holding the name.
So the only number worth planning around is the second one. A domain is a thing you keep for years; the rupee you spend on day one is rounding error against what you will pay in years two, three and four.

💡 Budget the renewal, diarise the date. Domain renewals are usually set to auto-renew, and a Rs. 1 purchase that becomes a Rs. 1,499 charge eleven months later is the single most common surprise on a registrar bill.
The multiple, and why .io is the odd one out
Set the renewal against the first year and the teaser structure becomes obvious. The .com is a 1,499-times multiple and the .in is 899 times. Those are not pricing decisions in the ordinary sense; they are a free first year with a rupee attached so the transaction exists.
The middle of the table runs at more conventional teaser multiples — .online at 35 times, .cloud at 13, .pro at 11, .xyz at 10, .icu at 8. Every one of those is still a first year priced far below the cost of holding the name.
Then there is .io, which behaves completely differently: Rs. 3,099 in year one against a Rs. 7,259 renewal, a multiple of just 2.3. It is the only extension on the page whose first-year price is a real price. It is also, by a wide margin, the most expensive domain here in every year including the first.

₹ One number that contradicts another on the same page. The top of the domain page advertises domain transfers, ".com from Rs. 969". The TLD table further down renews a .com at Rs. 1,499. A transfer normally adds a year to a domain's registration, so on these two printed figures moving an existing .com to Hostinger is quoted Rs. 530 below what renewing one there costs. We have not run a transfer to confirm what is charged at the end of that flow, and transfer pricing is quoted as a "from" price.
Cheapest in year one, dearest by year three
The practical consequence of eight different multiples is that the cheap-to-expensive ranking does not survive contact with time.
Rank these eight by first-year price and .online sits third, at Rs. 99 — it looks like one of the bargains on the page, ahead of .icu, .xyz, .cloud and .pro. Rank them by what three years actually cost and .online falls to seventh of eight, at Rs. 7,077, behind every one of those four. Only .io costs more.
The inversion runs the other way too. A .com looks identical to a .in on day one — both Rs. 1 — but over three years the .com costs Rs. 2,999 against the .in's Rs. 1,799, a difference of Rs. 1,200. If the site is aimed at an Indian audience, that gap buys a year of hosting.
The cheapest domain on this page over any realistic holding period is the .in, and it is not close.

💡 Do the sum for your own horizon. First year plus renewal times the number of extra years you expect to hold it. On a five-year view the differences widen further, because four of the five years are charged at the renewal rate.
What to actually do
If you want a domain for an Indian business or personal site and are not attached to .com, take the .in. It is the cheapest extension here in every year after the first and the three-year total is Rs. 1,799, lower than anything else on the page.
If you need the .com, take it and plan for Rs. 1,499 a year. It is the most recognised extension and the Rs. 1,200 three-year premium over .in is a defensible cost for that. What is not defensible is buying it believing Rs. 1 is the price.
Avoid choosing between the middle extensions on their first-year prices. Rs. 99 for a .online, Rs. 199 for a .cloud and Rs. 289 for a .pro are close enough together to be noise, while their renewals — Rs. 3,489, Rs. 2,519 and Rs. 3,099 — differ by nearly a thousand rupees a year, every year, in a different order.

Why is the renewal price so much higher than the first year?
Because the first year is a customer-acquisition price and the renewal is the actual cost of holding the name. This is standard across the domain registrar industry rather than particular to Hostinger, and Hostinger is more transparent than many in printing both figures on the same card. The multiples on this page are stark: a .com renews at 1,499 times its first-year price and a .in at 899 times, because the first year is effectively free with a rupee attached. The one extension that does not work this way is .io, at Rs. 3,099 rising to Rs. 7,259 — a multiple of 2.3, and the only first-year price on the page that reflects what the domain costs to hold.
Should you buy a .in or a .com?
On price, .in wins clearly: Rs. 899 a year against Rs. 1,499, which is Rs. 1,200 less over three years and Rs. 2,400 less over five. Both are Rs. 1 in the first year, so the decision is invisible on day one and shows up every year afterwards. On everything other than price the .com is the stronger asset — it is the extension people type by default, it travels outside India, and it is generally the easier name to sell later. The practical rule is that a business trading mainly in India, or a personal site, loses very little with a .in and saves real money; anything aiming at an international audience, or that might be sold as a brand, is usually worth the .com premium.
Is it cheaper to transfer a domain to Hostinger than to renew it?
