How well does the Honda Activa 6G showcase Japanese engineering?

How robust is the engine in Activa 6G?

Honda Activa has always been the choice of that uncle across the street who wanted a fuel-efficient daily commuter. It is also a teenager’s first choice for commuting after turning 18. This is all because of its extremely fuel-efficient yet peppy engine.

The 110cc pot is peppy and provides you with enough grunt to buzz through the city all week long without a fuel stop. Honda uses HET(Honda Eco Technology) which helps optimize mileage without loss in performance.

Fuel Injection makes sure that you utilize every ml of fuel and thus get a balanced character in performance and mileage. The 5.3-litre fuel tank is ample for a week's run and even more! Many competitors have come and perished, trying to dethrone Activa. The latest set has Hero with its sporty yet efficient Maestro Edge and TVS Jupiter which resembles a lot like the Activa.

How quick is the Activa 6G from 0-60?

When we talk about daily commuting and highly efficient offerings, acceleration takes the backseat. But Honda didn’t leave it unattended here and provided an impressive sprint rate. 2020 Activa 6G crosses the 60 kmph mark in under 11 seconds which is enough to put a grin on that teenager’s face who just turned 18.

The CVT gearbox is precise and doesn’t lag while accelerating. The new iteration gets a lot of “inside” modifications which reduce friction and eliminate vibrations from the engine. City runs are relaxing as the Activa 6G gets a redesigned belt to reduce power loss.

The top speed of 83 kmph might sound silly, but it gets the whole scooter shaking after the 80 mark. The engine stays relaxed in the 40-60 kmph range and that is the sweet spot. Hero has a lot of similarities with Honda due to their past relationships and thus you can see the traces of it in Maestro Edge. TVS Jupiter and Hero Maestro Edge are slower to the 60 kmph mark but have a higher top speed.

Brakes?

Brake setup has been retained on the Honda Activa 6G with the same 130mm drums at both ends. The upsizing of front wheels to 12-inch has helped improve driving dynamics without compromising on braking or efficiency.

The low kerb weight helps you get a hold of this peppy scooter without any hiccups. Honda could have gone with disc brakes up front as more and more competitors are migrating to a disc-drum setup.

None of the offerings is equipped with an ABS unit but they all have inbred iterations of a combined braking unit which mimics the functioning of an ABS unit. It engages both the brakes using one lever and thus helps in braking.

How comfortable is the new Activa 6G?

Honda Activa has always offered an easy riding experience. This was its winning feat that made its popularity among the masses. The shorter wheelbase made it easy to manoeuvre through tight traffic conditions and thus be physically less straining to handle.

The well-padded seat is ample for daily grinds and you sit upright which results in a commanding view of the road. The handlebar is positioned to provide you with a relaxed riding posture.

The ground clearance has been increased which helps in Indian road conditions! The new wider front tyres, telescopic front forks and adjustable rear suspension are incremental upgrades that drastically improves the handling of this scooter which was an ailing issue. None of the competitors provide us with the level of flexibility in the Activa.

How similar does the Honda Activa 6G look?

“Beauty is skin deep” and that can be applied here as it still follows a decade old design language with subtle modifications. It still manages to refresh the presence in the Indian automotive market with its robust performance.

Honda Activa 6G external fuel filler

Activa 6G gets new LED DRLs and an all-LED headlight setup to differentiate it from the not so different looking predecessors. In an overall form factor, Activa still looks the same which is nostalgic to many and not boring for the new riders.

Honda could have gone with the semi-digital instrument cluster from the Activa 125 but decided to not do so to constrain expenses. The overall dimensions remain the same with the exception of a tall ride now, due to the increased ground clearance. The competitors for that matter also retain many of their design cues and are not much different from their older generations.

How safe is the Honda Activa 6G and what are the new features?

Honda has made sure to provide the Activa with competent safety features without bumping up the price. The Combi-braking system is a very clever addition which utilises both the brakes at the actuation of even one lever.

Honda Activa 6g redesigned instrument cluster

Activa 6G comes with a lot of surprises as it adds a host of efficiency bumping features to the internals of the potent 110cc engine along with an engine check light. The smart new starter system is an efficient upgrade as well.

TVS Jupiter surprised us here with the addition of smart xonnect feature in it. This seamlessly connects your smartphone with the instrument cluster to display information at a dynamic patch on it. Honda Activa 6G and Hero Maestro Edge have a similar set of features.

How does the competition stack up against this highly successful Honda?

Honda Activa 6G vs Hero Maestro Edge

Hero Maestro Edge

Both of these manufacturers are the oldest players in the automatic scooter segment and the sale figures speak for it. Honda was the reason for Hero’s popularity earlier when they were together. But now, Hero is not able to create the same level of commotion as it did back in the day when it was “Hero Honda”. Honda is still riding high on its utterly reliable offering which has won over many and still manages to do so.

Honda Activa 6G vs TVS Jupiter BS6

TVS Jupiter

TVS Jupiter resembles Honda Activa 6G in a lot of ways. It looks similar and uses the engine of the same character. TVS wanted to shake up the Indian market just like Honda did when it bought out the Activa. It provides marginally more power as well as more mileage but suffers from reliability issues. Honda scores here and thus takes the podium.

How has Honda Activa managed to become a household name?

Honda has been completing households for well over a decade and now it has kind of become family. People now know the best selling scooter in the country just by “Activa”. It is loved by people of all ages and that is a very hard feat to achieve in such a diverse country. Honda managed to do so and still does so. It is the most trusted one in its class and has proudly earned it.
