In the two-wheeler industry, the best selling bikes have also been one of the most reliable ones. In fact, the same can be said about any industry. Hence, even in the car market, Toyota’s Innova sold like hotcakes due to the never-ending reliability it offered. With Hero’s Splendor, things are no different as it has always remained one of the most reliable bikes sold in the Indian commuter-bike segment. Hence, it's time now to see what makes this reliable motorcycle so reliable in comparison to its rivals.
The first generation of Splendor was launched under the joint venture of Hero and Honda in 1994. But it was not the first bike under the Hero Honda venture as it succeeded the CD 100. It came with the same engine that the CD 100 had and not much was done to make it a completely different bike. Still, it was a success as it offered better looks than the CD 100. The next generation of the Splendor was launched in 2011. But this time Hero and Honda had worked on a new engine that came with better refinement levels as well as offered better reliability than the CD 100’s engine. This engine was based on the Honda cub C100EX with a similar bore and stroke of 50 mm × 49.5 mm. This was a version that offered power start and soon the Splendor became the top-selling motorcycle in October 2016 with over 250,000 units sold.
Honda’s cub C100EX was a moped that was never launched in India but had a reputation of being supremely reliable. Hence, the Splendor gets a tried and tested motor which has already proved its metal in other markets. Due to the superb reliability and easy maintenance of the engine, Splendor started selling at a rate of a million per year.Till this date, the Splendor offers the same levels of reliability and easy maintenance making it a boon in the rural market. It is due to the fact that the engine can be repaired by any local mechanic and has the ability to last for a really long time especially if maintenance is done at regular intervals.
Hero MotorCorp has claimed to be India’s first manufacturer to offer a 5-year warranty on all its two-wheelers. Hero’s warranty coverage is 5-year / 70,000 km on motorcycles and 5 years / 50,000 km on scooters. Hence the Splendor is also a part of this warranty package and hence comes with a 5-year or 70,000 km warranty as standard.
Hence the warranty would be void after 5 years and 70,000 km. For e.g., if you bought the bike on 2nd Jan 2011 and it has run 40,000 km, and the date you take it to the service centre is 3rd Jan 2016, no part would be covered under warranty.
In comparison to the Splendor, the Honda CD100 offers a 2-Year warranty with an extended warranty that can be purchased. However, TVS Star City Plus offers the same tenure of warranty making it a value for money package as well.
