Bajaj Auto and Hero MotoCorp are the two biggest two-wheeler titans of the Indian market. Hence once any of the two automakers decide to launch a motorcycle in the same segment as the other one, it’s certainly a showdown rather than a mere competition. Added to that if the bikes launched in the most fiercely competitive segment of the market, then it only adds some fuel to the fire. Yes, we are talking about the 100cc motorcycle segment and the two most selling commuter bikes, the Hero Splendor Plus and the Bajaj Platina.

Both the bikes fall into the category of “bread and butter” products for their respective manufacturers and both bikes in question are also priced quite similarly. Even in terms of specs, both are quite evenly matched and the features tell you the same story too. But is one product better than the other or do they offer the same things just under different brand tags, its time to find out!

How does Hero Splendor iSmart and Bajaj Platina differ in performance characteristics?

Hero Splendor iSmart and the Bajaj Platina both have got new updated BS6 compliant engines. The Splendor Plus still makes slightly more power than Platina but what makes the performance output hard to predict is the fact that Platina is lighter than the Splendor Plus. Adding to the confusion is the small matter of torque as well which you get more of with the Bajaj Platina.

The lighter weight and the extra torque does help the Platina fare better when it comes to managing city traffic. However, there is no replacement for power when it comes to 0-60 Kmph timings as the Splendor Plus is still faster than the Platina. Its engine also feels more refined and responsive.

The Bajaj Platina is more suitable for the city conditions as with the extra torque and lighter weight it also offers shockers which comes with more travel than the ones in the Splendor Plus. However, there is very little to differentiate between the two. The Splendor Plus makes up for the lack of more suspension travel by offering a wider more comfortable seat and a 5-step hydraulic rear shock absorber. Overall, the Splendor Plus feels more dynamic in terms of performance and comfort while the Platina is more desirable for city use.

How does the Hero Splendor differ in mileage figures to the Bajaj Platina?

When it comes to the most important aspect for Indian buyers, the fuel efficiency, the Platina manages to beat the highest selling bike in India, the Splendor Plus. It goes 10 km farther for a litre of fuel than the Splendor iSmart which might be a deal maker or breaker for some. The Bajaj Platina is also around Rs. 5000 cheaper than the Splendor Plus. However, thei3s technology available with the Splendor iSmartand its better switchgear quality might justify its higher pricing for some customers.

How different are the features on offer in these commuters?

When it comes to features on offer none of the bikes feels ahead of the other. The Platina 100 misses out on certain features like the Nitrox Suspension and Tubeless Tyres which are only offered with the 110cc variant. But it does offer the Combi Braking System which is much like Splendor Plus’s Integrated Braking System. The Splendor iSmart offers 5-step Adjustable shock absorbers which makes it feel more dynamic in terms of ride quality. It enables you to change the setting according to the road you mostly ride the bike on.

If you are out to choose a bike based on its features then it can be a tough task as they offer almost the same level of equipment. Overall, the Splendor Plus feels better executed when it comes to its features.

Which Indian automaker prevails as an all-rounder here?

After looking at the spec sheet as well as features on offer, it is clear that both the bikes offer quite the same package. Hence it boils down to execution more than what is on offer. In that case, the Splendor iSmart takes the upper hands as it feels like a better executed and a more refined product. However, once you factor in the cheaper price and the extra mileage that the Bajaj Platina comes out with shining colours. Hence, Platina is the winner of this competition as it scores higher on things that matter more to the commuter bike segment.
