Go to any rural section of India and ask people of their choice of transport vessel and the majority of answers you get will be "Splendor". This is the type of impact Hero has had on India for a long time by becoming an integral part of the society. It all started with Hero Honda but even after the split-up in 2010, the nation loved motorcycle carried on as the Hero Splendor iSmart.

2020 Hero Splendor iSmart is now powered by a BS6 compliant 109.51cc engine that pumps out 8.97 bhp and 9.89 Nm. It is mated to an all-up 4-Speed gearbox and is a versatile all-rounder. It goes up against the likes of Honda CD 110 Dream and TVS Star City Plus, in a commuter face-off.

What are the good bits?

  • Newly developed engine from scratch
  • Hero's fuel-saving iSmart integration
  • Front Disc Brake on offer
  • Best in class ride quality

The not so good bits:

  • Priced on the higher side
  • Generic looks

What’s New in the BS6 Hero Splendor iSmart?

  • BS6 Compliant Engine
  • New Features
  • New Colours
  • Fuel Injection

How peppy is the engine in 2020 Splendor iSmart?

The 109.51cc engine used in the Splendour iSmart is special as it is the first indigenously developed engine from Hero. It pumps out 8.97 bhp of peak power and 9.89 Nm of peak torque which is not much but it adds to the purpose and practicality of this motorcycle. It is coupled to an all-up 4-Speed gearbox and a light clutch. The engine is now fuel injected to provide for a mote refined riding experience.

The impressive part of this engine is the way it delivers the power. Hero has opted for a flat curve which helps to spread the torque throughout the rev-band. This helps you to ride the Splendor at 20 KMPH at top gears without a hiccup. This also adds up to its flexible nature.

Hero Splendor iSmart is priced on the higher side as compared to its competitors and this bump has to do with the addition of segment-first features and updated technology. Its competition has, more or less similarly specced engines which pump out, the performance of same bandwidth. But Hero stands to be a bit more sporty in terms of performance.

How quick is the Hero Splendor iSmart from 0-60 KMPH?

The combination of a balanced and lightweight chassis along with a wide-spectrum torque curve gives it commendable acceleration figures. It crosses the 60 KMPH mark in under 8 seconds which is impressive for a commuter motorcycle that can run all day long.

2020 hero splendor ismart acceleration 0-60

It is stable at speeds up to 80 kmph and then vibrations creep in and can be felt all over your body! The four-speed all-up gearbox is crisp and doesn't post any issues. This humble commuter has a top speed of 87 kmph which isn't much but gives you the thrill now and then with a lot of vibrations.

As the competition have similarly specced engine and gearbox configurations, the difference in acceleration is due to its difference in kerb weights. TVS Star City Plus is the lightest of the lot and so get to 60 KMPH the quickest. Top speed is of the same bandwidth as it is limited by the chassis engine.

How sure-footed are the brakes from 80-0 KMPH?

The brakes have improved with a disc-drum setup. The addition of a disc brake has improved the braking by a huge margin. There is ample bite from both ends and lever travel is crisp for the frontal disc. Another noteworthy feature is the Integrated Braking System(IBS), which can be defined as a crude and cost-effective replacement of an ABS unit.

2020 hero splendor ismart disc brake

The IBS engages both brakes simultaneously on the depression of either end. This helps for a more sure-footed braking scenario and also minimises the chances of skidding. Another downside we came through is of the rear brake pedal going all the way which becomes an issue when used in conjunction with the crispier front brakes.

Lower kerb weight helps both its competitors have a more composed braking experience but it is just marginal and you will have to focus to differentiate it. Hero is the only manufacturer that provides a disc brake upfront in this bunch and that makes all the difference.

How fuel-efficient is 2020 Hero Splendor iSmart?

Commuter motorcycles are known for its immensely practical nature and impressive mileage figures. A full tank of fuel in the 2020 Hero Splendor iSmart is enough to ride through a full week or even more. The flat powerband along with a fuel-injection system helps the Hero Splendor extract the best mileage figures from the 110cc engine.

The i3S technology is a smart integration which shuts off the engine while idling. This system works in conjunction with the clutch. When the clutch is depressed while idling, the engine shuts off and on releasing it turns back on. This helps in saving fuel at traffics and also adds to ease of rideability.

TVS Star City Plus has a more efficient engine setup which chucks out the maximum figures. This is mostly because of its toned down engine performance. Honda CD 110 Dream is the least efficient of the lot, but by a hair's length as it is just short of 1 kmpl as compared to Hero.

How flexible is the ride dynamics in the Splendor iSmart?

Hero has positioned the engine vertically and it has its fair share of benefits. This orientation helps provide more area of the engine to be cooled due to its parallel positioned with the oncoming airflow. It also helps lower the centre of gravity as opposed to a horizontally positioned engine and thus improve its handling. Clever changes make more impressive improvements. This setup, however, eliminates the storage boxes which were earlier present just under the tank but that is something we can live with, right?

The suspension is barebone and comprises of telescopic forks upfront and twin 2-step adjustable springs at the rear. But Hero has supposedly worked on its compression and now caters to a more balanced and comfortable setup. Handling is also impressive coming from a commuter of this sorts as the Ceat Secura Zoom rubber provides with ample grip even on loose surfaces.

Foldable footpegs keep things safe if you plan to get corner hard on your 110cc motorcycle! You know....like a serious adrenaline rush! TVS Star City Plus is the only other bike in this lot to provide with rear adjustable springs and it is a 5-step. It, however, has smaller rims which adds to a more comfortable riding experience as compared to its counterparts.

How comfortably are you seated on the Hero Splendor iSmart while travelling on roads?

The seat is wide and provides ample cushioning to give you a whole day's ride without a sore bottom. Hero has always been known for its comfort and efficiency long back from the days of "Hero Honda". You sit upright and the handlebar is wide and high. This provides for a relaxed riding posture with minimal fatigue.

The footpegs are positioned vertically to your torso and so the rider's triangle is well preserved with less stress on the legs. The dual ends gear lever and brake pedal are both comfortably sized to give you a simplified riding experience. The pillion will also face no difficulties are the seat is long and wide, even for the pillion.

Smart integrated split grab rails add both practicality and aesthetics to the humble commuter. All the motorcycles in this segment are now equipped with both a kicker and electric starter for ease of usage. Honda CD 110 Dream has the highest stance and so you can be carefree with it on our unpredictable roads, as opposed to the others.

How Subtle looking is the 2020 Hero Splendor iSmart?

Hero has gone for a subtle yet sporty approach in terms of the design element. It is a subtle motorcycle with a contoured tank and plastic cowling extending from under the seat to the taillights. But the usage of dual-tone colours give it a modern approach. Apart from that, there is minimal bodywork which makes it a relatively airy motorcycle.

The rear springs are red and provide for a contrasting look along with the wireframe "i3s" inception on the tank. A fully sized crash slider gives protection for the engine as well as the rider in case of an emergency. Black alloy wheels add to the sporty look of this Hero.

All of the offerings in this lot are more or less of the same footprint, but TVS Star City is the most compact of them all which adds for its city drinkability and traffic filtering skills. It also weighs in at the least which adds to its ease of rideability.

What are the various safety and class-leading features?

Commuter motorcycles are bare-bone and are devoid of any noteworthy features as the sole purpose of these machines is to provide for reliable and extremely efficient riding experience. But the Hero Splendor in question here has a bunch of clever tricks up its sleeve. It has Hero's IBS system which can be stated as an Alpha version of the ABS. It engages both brakes to give a more sure-footed experience.

The other interesting feature is i3s technology which is slated to conserve as much fuel as possible and provide for a very mileage friendly ride. It works in conjunction with the clutch and so while idling the engine shuts off on depressing the clutch. And when you release it, the engine comes back to life. This helps extensively in cities with a lot of traffic stops.

Another important silo for these motorcycles is its reliability point of view, which is well taken care of in all three of them. Hero Splendor and TVS Star City Plus has the bunch topping 5-year warranty period but TVS Radeon weirdly has just 2 years of it.

How does the Competition stack up against Hero Splendor iSmart?

Hero Splendor iSmart VS Honda CD 110 Dream

hero splendor ismart vs honda cd 110 dream

Honda CD 110 Dream was late to the party, but still manages to hit its mark with an utterly reliable engine combines with a strong brand name which has enjoyed trust and praise in the industry. But Hero is far and wide ahead in terms of reliability and connectivity. Hero also has a slew of added features in its list which is impressive for a 110cc commuter offering. Hero is our choice of the two due to its impressive all-rounded package and desire its premium.

Hero Splendor iSmart vs TVS Star City Plus

hero splendor ismart vs tvs star city plus

TVS Star City Plus became a star of sorts due to its sporty nature and advertisements with the Helicopter man, M. S. Dhoni himself. It is comfortable, has enough grunt and efficiency to run seamlessly through the day and cost Rs. 10,000 less. But it lacks the features and flexibility as the Hero Splendor and of course, the added experience in this segment. Hero Splendor wins our trust here.

Is the Hero Splendor iSmart still the common man's best choice?

Yes, and it has to do with more than just a name. Hero has become an emotion which the coming people share with unity. It has a perfect blend of performance, efficiency, ergonomics and a will to run all day long. It instils confidence in the rider and uplifts him to do chores. All these years of experience and feedback has helped the Indian automaker to fine-tune its simple formula and make it better and better, day on day. Hero Splendor remains "Iss Desh ki dhadkan".
