Hero has been subtle after their split up with Honda and we consumers were also having a hard time renaming the household brand in our heads! But it has been done and Hero now offers us a diverse line-up.
2020 Hero Maestro Edge is one such diverse offering and comes in dual-tone colours as well. It has an edgy attitude and is priced at Rs. 53,330 and Rs. 1,400 more for the dual-tone ones. A completely new 110cc engine powers this potent scooter and takes on the big players like Honda Activa 6G and TVS Jupiter for the common man’s favourite choice.
Edgy and modern design
Peppy engine
Feature laden
Sluggish low end
Stiff rear suspension
Dual-tone colour
This 110cc pot has been designed from the ground up and so is a completely different experience in all. Hero went back to the drawing board after their split-up with Honda to create the scooter which the audience loved.
This engine is a peppy unit that is made to take a lot of urban beating. Hero went with a carbureted setup unlike its big brother the Maestro Edge 125 which uses fuel injection. The power and torque comes in linearly which makes it easy to modulate the engine on our busy roads.

Efficiency is a strong point here but it doesn’t cut above the competition. This is mainly because of the carburated setup which isn’t optimised like fuel-injected ones. But the larger fuel tank takes care of this setback and returns an impressive range of 291.5 km. The competition surely has an edge here with more optimised engines and efficient rides.
The carburettor setup helps Maestro Edge have a surge of power and torque as you twist the throttle. But that fades out after the 50 kmph mark when the ride starts to become sluggish and you can see the needle crawl.
The sweet spot of the Maestro is in the bracket of 40-60 kmph during which it is the most confident and frankly it is the range at which you will be riding this scooter at most times. It is also on the heavier side which takes a chunk of its swiftness.

The added weight, but gives it a more confidence-inspiring stature even at top speeds. All of the scooters are equipped with a CVT gearbox that helps cover distances seamlessly without a hiccup. The three offerings have a tight face-off here as they showcase similar characteristics.
Hero has equipped the Maestro Edge with drum brakes at both ends. This is ample given the amount of silly power it produces and there is enough bite to bring it to a standstill from any given speeds.
Integrated Braking System is an intelligent addition from Hero which actuates both the brakes together to provide a more stronger braking and also serves the purpose of an ABS unit to an extent.

Both the competitors are equipped with similarly sized drums that give all of them a similar braking experience. But kerb weight plays an important role here and it marginally changes how the scooters behave while braking, nothing major though.
The 12-inch front wheels provide a sturdy ride and the telescopic forks help maintain its statue at any given speed. Alloy wheels don’t fiddle with the overall ride quality and thus adds to the visual appeal. The suspension setup has enough travel to neutralize bad patches of roads and thus make way for a comfortable riding experience.
The well-padded wide seat is comfortable for short rides even with the pillion on. The seat height is on the higher side but that doesn’t decrease comfort levels. You sit in an upright and relaxed position and the handle doesn’t kiss your knee!

The new Honda 6G has best-in-class ground clearance which gives it an edge over the others in this case. The addition of adjustable rear suspension setup in Honda Activa 6G also takes it up a notch and sets the bar high for the competitors. Herp has a long list of catching up to do.
Hero has followed an edgy approach here as the Maestro Edge has a tinge of masculinity. It follows the same approach as Honda did with the Dio, to provide a muscular offering which can turn heads. It shares the basic design language with Maestro but adds a few “edges” to it. There is a certain youthful appeal to it with its dual-tone offerings.
It has an all-plastic body which helps in reducing the overall weight and thus provides better efficiency figures. There are no loose bits in the bodywork and the panels have been lined up well.

Hero Maestro Edge is the most funky looking one of the lot and the design cues makes it stand apart from the sober-looking TVS Jupiter Classic and Honda Activa 6G. Dimensionally, all the scooters are the same but differ largely in the design language and thus the appeal.
Safety is taken care of in the Maestro Edge as you get the integrated braking system which actuates both the brakes while braking which helps you in controlling the ride even in extreme braking situations. The LED taillight also helps in making your presence known to oncoming traffic from afar.
You are treated to a lot of premium features which helps it stand apart from the sea of scooters. Firstly, the class-leading 22-litre underseat storage helps extensively with your daily chores and more. A boot light and smartphone charging port adds to its utility.

The digital part of the instrument cluster is intuitive and provides ample information like trip meter, fuel meter and even a side stand indicator. The ignition key has multi-functionality which is used for steering lock, seat release and the external fuel release as well. The competitors also have a varying list of features but are not as diverse as the Hero Maestro Edge.
TVS offers Jupiter with the same intention of creating a commotion as the Activa did and still does. It is slowly catching up but faces heavy competition from Hero Maestro Edge that is also out with the same intention. Hero has the edge here as the extensive availability of cheap spare parts and a wide network of service centres works heavily in Hero’s favour.
The throne that Hero Maestro Edge is trying to dethrone is currently being held by the much appreciated and successful Honda Activa 6G. Honda Activa was able to rise to fame due to its timing of entry into the Indian market when there were no competent players. With the new Activa 6G, Honda has taken it a notch above with many first in class features and thus Hero has a lot of catching up to do.
Hero is a modern and edgy take on the daily commute. It appeals more to the younger generation with the funky looks and edgy dual-tone colour options. The availability of a strong service network and cheap spare parts adds to its pros. But if we look at the whole picture, Honda has been doing the same thing for the past decade but with a much more sober-looking offering. This helps woo a much wider range of audience and is thus the largest selling scooter and our choice of the lot.
