The Bajaj Platina was introduced in India in 2006 and since then it has created quite a buzz among the commuter segment. It is based on another sensation from Bajaj, the CT100, and being a 100-cc bike, it is the lowest priced bike in India right now. The Platina, with an added advantage of the price, the USP of this bike is its impressive fuel economy. If you want to buy a rather good-looking bike that gives impressive mileage and performs at par better than other 100 CC bikes in the segment, the Platina goes well with your requirements.

Pros

  • One of the best mileage bikes

  • Comfortable ride quality

  • Budgetary Bike

  • Light weight body

  • Very good handling

Cons

  • Little short on power

  • Missing 5th gear for improved riding

  • Not suitable for highway riding

  • Not preferred for long trips

What’s New

There is not so much to talk about as the bike remains all the same except for some minor changes. But Bajaj has launched a new variant as Platina 100 KS (Kick Start) in India at a price of Rs 40,500 ex-showroom New Delhi. The update includes the addition of CBS (combined braking system) and the bike continues to be equipped with a 130mm drum brake in the front and a 110mm drum brake at the back.

What is the power source in this Bajaj Platina?

The company has slightly increased Platina displacement to 102cc and offered DTS-i and exhaust TEC technology from its bigger siblings. The power figure remains the same at 8.2PS at 7,500rpm but torque has been increased by 0.55Nm to 8.6Nm and now peaks 500rpm later at 5,000rpm.

By looking at the competition, the Platina reigns the torque department but loses the power figures to Hero HF deluxe. But the tech, DTSi, used in platina is the real game change with twin spark plugs which helps burn fuel more efficiently.

How quick is the Bajaj Platina for your daily commuting needs?

In our acceleration test, Platina achieved a top speed of 87kmph with a 0-60 time in 8.28 seconds. Thanks to the DTSi tech, the twin spark plugs ignite combustion with frequent order giving the Platina an edge over its competitors. Platina has the full 1 sec edge over its arch-rival and returns better top speed.

How sure-footed are the brakes?

In the braking department, all the bikes are equipped with drum brakes. They don’t have disc brakes, even as an option. But the braking will be affected on the Platina as it is the heaviest bike in its category. The drum brakes are not the best and require a hard squeeze but they bring the bike to a halt in quite a long distance.

What is the mileage returned by Bajaj Platina?

The mileage king is the TVS Sport. It has the smallest engine of the lot and the figures & the weight is low which in turns helps TVS achieving the highest mileage of the trio. But on the flip side, it also has the low capacity fuel tank which lowers its overall range of commute and that’s where the Platina comes to the show.

How is the ride dynamics?

The dynamics of the Platina is moreover the same, when compared to its rivals but where the Platina shines is in the comfort zone. The suspension setup the wider tyres give the bike a more proportionate look and solid grip on the road.

How comfortably are you seated on the Bajaj Platina while travelling on roads?

As expected with a commuter motorcycle, the Platina has a typical upright position of riding which makes it a comfortable choice. The redesigned frame has resulted in a more composed ride while absorbing rough road noises and is an improvement over the older version. The engine has gained some refinement over the old non DTS-i motor and it's fairly pleasing at lower revs but vibrations do grow as you give throttle.

How Subtle looking is the 2020 Bajaj Platina?

The Platina is the commuter’s choice in the segment. So, don’t expect it to be ravishing, instead it is calm and simple. The basic looks of this bike beats Hero HF deluxe in major aspects.

The New Platina has been tweaked a little in the styling area. It has not got a new set of decals but still the basic design will remind you of the Wind 125, on which it’s based on. There are some tweaks on the side panels but you have to look closely to recognise the change. There is no fairing with a flat line running from the tank all the way to the tail lights which somewhat looks great.

If you look at the proportions of this bike, it's not the compact one and that’s its USP. It is the lengthiest of the lot and has the longest wheelbase which helps it to achieve impressive stability and speed on the road. Long length helps to make the rider and pillion comfortable on long journeys.

What are the various safety and class-leading features?

On the safety front, the Platina fails to create an impression. Platina has no safety equipment but complies with the govt regulations. It has the DRL’s, AHO (always headlamp on) functions and so on but the safety equipment like combo brakes & LED headlamps are missing.

There is no cutting-edge tech which has been used in these bikes but every bike has its own capabilities. Bajaj has introduced DTS-I tech in Platina, which is a twin spark tech. Hero has i3S tech which is, in simple terms, a start stop system. TVS doesn’t seem to be bothered about any of its bikes apart from its Apache series. We don’t see any tech inscribed in the TVS Sport as it seems to do well with the current setup.

How does the Competition stack up against Bajaj Platina?

Bajaj Platina VS Hero HF Deluxe

Hero HF Deluxe is a 100cc entry level motorcycle with good mileage, which was introduced with an attempt to regain the pole position in the 100-cc category. It is powered by a 97.2cc, air-cooled, 4-stroke single cylinder OHC engine with 4-speed constant mesh gearbox which generates 7.8PS of power at 7500rpm and 8.04Nm of torque at 4500rpm.

The dimension of the bike makes this a little compact one as it measures 1965mm in length, 720mm in width and 1405mm in height while the wheelbase measuring 1235mm with ground clearance of 165mm. HF deluxe has been equipped with drum brakes in front and rear and has hydraulic shockers in front and a 2-step adjustable hydraulic shockers at the back. The Fuel tank capacity has been rated at around 12 litres with 1.8-liters as reserve. Hero HF deluxe starts at a price of Rs.41,533 and extends upto Rs.44,533.

Bajaj Platina VS TVS Sport

The TVS Star Sport comes with a decent styling appearance along with a lot of thrilling, exciting and safety features. The bike has been garnished with stylish and trendy headlights which sets this apart from other rivals. One of the most exclusive features of this bike is the headlamp flashing switch which is absent from most of its rivals. This helps in flashing the headlights which makes it safer for overtaking. It has been fitted with a digital ignition system which gives optimum spark timings for optimum utilization of fuel at every engine speed. The fuel tank has been uniquely designed for practicality and has a capacity of 12-litres with 2-litres in reserve.

The TVS Star Sport is equipped by a 4-stroke engine with the displacement of around 99.7cc generating about 5.50kw of power at 7500rpm and maximum torque of 7.5Nm at 5000rpm mated to the 4-speed constant mesh.

Does the Bajaj Platina stand a chance against segment leaders?

The engine improvement over the older generations has made a huge difference in the refinement and fuel efficiency figures. Additionally, there’s also electric start for added convenience. There's also no arguing with the fact that with the incredible fuel efficiency and at Rs 40,897 ex-showroom, New Delhi. It really becomes a great value proposition if you need to make money count.
